The question here is: "Why do you play EVE?"

There is much to gripe about and many have ugly things to say about CCP but the bottom line is that if you're reading this then you plop down a monthly payment, or spend enough time to trade ISK for a PLEX, so the question is why?

(And for all you "I don't play anymore because blah blah blah" types, you did play once and there was a reason, so spill it!)

Personally I enjoy PVP. First person shooters are one of my favorites but they are checkers to the chess that is EVE. I'm also a stats geek and will spend days on EFT fitting a ship to make use of every amp of grid and every cycle of CPU on the boat. If that ship goes down in flames, I'll look over the log and study the KM trying to figure out how to make it better.

I like the fact that loosing your ship is a loss not just a small set back in time as you go and collect everything off some corpse. There is some real excitement when I stand to loose something I put a lot of effort into. Big reward when I win and a lot of yelling at the sky while the dogs cower in the corners of the house after 1.5 billion isk goes pop. The challenge is the key.

And the challenge comes from the other humans who play the game. Any single player game I've played cannot produce the challenge of another person. Other MMOs and their so called "PVP" is more like pokemon. Nothing is better than leading 90 people you've never met in real life to victory against a foe that views you as a bunch of scrubs who only managed to undock out of pure luck.

I'm one of those guys who plays everything to win and will find out everything needed to win. I'm less patient at practicing purely mechanical actions (like strafe-jumping in Quake or just general aim in FPS). Before EVE, I played WoW for a while until I knew everything there was to know about that game and I moved on because I was bored of it. EVE's kept me engaged because it has a lot of stuff to learn and I felt there was always something to learn. Now, I'm somewhat less engaged, because I've accomplished many things I wanted to do, and the north is in a lull after I participated in burning it all down. I also feel like I've come to grips with the majority of the mechanics and learn less and less everyday.

So, for now, I'm logging in to skill change and join ops with a good chance of a fight. There's also about half a year of training until the next milestone for all my accounts, which means I'm training boring things like jump skills for a large part of the foreseeable future. There are still things I want to accomplish, but logging in for the sake of it seems a bit wasted - I'd just end up roaming for 2 hours and getting 5 kills, which is time better spent stabbing myself in the leg with a blunt pencil...

Because I find game design interesting and the politics that results from it fascinating. My intro into Eve being from a website where things like the super-cap discussion would be a prime topic. Eve is unique and epic in a lot of ways, largely because CCP are terrible game designers who don't think much past "this will be cool!" and enjoy punishing their players. A more sane design studio would never come up with something like Eve since they'd guide and control the game much more (eg. Battlefields). Nor would the more coddled players of today go for it or a studio be happy with a niche game.

The actual game-play itself... not so much.

I would fall under this. I started to play it because my mentally-handi-cappable younger brother started to play so I started to have an activity with him. I put it down for a while and then got back into it because I wanted to see what "Big-SuperCap-Sov-Warfare-Eve-History-Making E-peen imploding-Fights."I started to save up isk like mad and trained my characters for a titan and mothership. After spending literally 7 hours (from Euro TZ to US TZ) in the lag fest that was O2O I quickly came to the conclusion that it sucked. And was even worse on the winning side because the incentive of whoring on supercap mails was too temping. Now however I want to learn solo/small gang pvp. I have a decent number of kills and it looks 'impressive' to the untrained eye, but its not really. IMO when you fly in a massive fleet it is not a measure of you, but of your fleet commander. I am damn good at taking orders and mashing F1 don't get me wrong, but I actually want to learn the finer points. So that leaves me with isk to burn and ship's to lose in this pursuit.

I was in that O2O mess as well. 4 hours of black screen to find out I was a pod really had me begining to wonder why I bother sometimes. But the smaller fights (30-100) in SubCap ships is a lot of fun. IF CCP could get rid of sould crushing lag I think epic fights like O2O would be a ball.

The question is, would you recommend EVE to a friend? Personally I've managed to get 13 of my friends to at least try the game. Of those 3 still play. (Actually, maybe only two. Haven't seen one for while.) The number one reason most people didn't keep playing? "You're not a person, just a ship." Maybe Incarna fixes that. At least until they have to undock and go back to being a ship...

I enjoy it because of the sandbox and the pvp. PvP in eve is more interesting than any other game I've played, due at least in part to the sandbox in that when I blow your ship up it blows up rather than just respawning 100 feet away. Also, the fact that they don't essentially reset the game and make all prior accomplishments irrelevant every expansion ala WoW and friends is a major factor. If I take a break for a few months, my Archon will still be appx as useful as it was before.

I suppose i simply enjoy inflicting as much grief on other people as i can. EvE allows this like few other games even dare to dream and while i rage over every loss i, or my corp, lose. On the China server I ran the tutorial missions, just to see what they were like five years on. That was ok in an unexciting way. I then took my free slasher and went to a proper agent. The first one was hard as hell with a civilian invuln, two hours' worth of shield skills and 2 125mm autos. The second mission was bugged so that every time I warped to a beacon to watch some flypast of minmatar navy ships the battlecruisers and cruisers that there there would lock me up and shoot the hell out of me, while the next beacon wouldn't spawn. This is tyrannis code, not some ancient Red Moon Rising release.

CCP are still retards on PvE.
