I'd guess it has to do with it being geographically centered (meaning little/no Tyrion, Dany, etc) away from some of the more endearing/popular characters.

The series had some difficulty retaining momentum as it took Martin a really really long time to release updates.

Nothing is wrong with AFFC per say, but it follows ASOS which is pretty goddamn amazing. So if you go straight into Crows after Storm, like most people did you were left feeling that it was a subpar book. At least in my opinion.

so as an avid poster to several other ASOIAF forums the general consensus seems to be that Jon snow is "dead" but by no means finished in terms of being a character. He seems to be the leading candidate for being the true azor azhai reborn, which allows him multiple angles of being alive but dead. That's not including the warg aspect.Most seem to accept stannis as dead but that's by no means a generally accepted consensus.Dany, being infected by the flux is in serious argument still.

Now that I'm done reading it and have another five year wait in front of me to resolve the numerous cliffhangers (maybe), I'd say this one was better than book four but not as good as book three. Very massive spoilers:

Jon's chapters were good. I don't believe the end for one second. It doesn't fit Martin's pattern for POV characters and there's way too much detail of what is going on up there with no other POV character to exploit it.

Daenarys's chapters were okay besides the constant hmming and hawing over who she wanted to fuck. In book three she was starting to resemble a Stackpole character - always best at everything and everything always working out in her favor. It was good to see that all fall to pieces.

Tyrion's chapters were meh, not as good as he was in two and three. The Jon Connington stuff came out of left field; I'll have to reread to be sure but I don't think there was even a hint that there was another Targaryen alive before that.

As noted above, Bran's chapters ended early with little happening.

Making up for it were Theon's chapters though they also stopped after a while; still, for the first half of the book he was probably the star.

The two Arya chapters were a nice nod to showing us things were still progressing as expected there.

Jaime's chapter was a throwaway and the plotline went dead quiet afterwards; we replaced Brienne's cliffhanger with his.

Also disappearing halfway through with a hung plotline was Davos. Bring back the onion knight!

It was nice to humiliate Cersei a bit but nothing was resolved.

As for the minor POV characters, Asha chapters were decent enough, Victarion's were pointless since he has about as much chance of having any impact on the story as Penny's pig, Quentyn was a disappointment, Barristan's seemed out of character for him.

Totally unseen: Samwell and Sansa; no hints of either as well. Also missing Marwyn who was supposedly heading for Daenarys.

All in all a good book though I have a hard time being happy with an author leaving that many (and severe) cliffhangers when books are as long in coming as they are with GRRM. But yes, of course I'll buy book six the day it comes out... assuming any of us are even still alive at that point.

Get it right, sanderson wanted to make it one book, but the publishing company said "NO" and jordan's wife agreed. The last book would have been more than 2000 pages, a lot more, and it wouldn't have been practical. Have you even read the new books? There is a LOT less filler in them than the old jordan novels.

Not sure about Stannis being dead, that sounds pretty bogus to me. Manderly wasn't about to go along with the Boltons, and he formed a major part of their forces... The bastard is demanding Theon as well? Sounds like he didn't conquer anybody.

I'm not sure about Snow... But I think he's pretty damn dead. He can't be the chosen one of rhollor, that thing is chilling out down in the riverlands with Catelyn's body. Jon asked the watch to cross the rubicon, and the senate stabbed him to death. As to the warg aspect... Ghost is locked up in his room, I don't think he'll last long. With Marsh and the others in charge, everything will go to hell in a handbasket. Going back on the deal with the wildlings, they'll barely be able to man the three watch castles if any of them survive the fighting. Hardhome just made an awesome buffet for the others, and lemme guess that the woodswitch was one of the Others-worshippers.

Bran... I love his chapters, I think his greenseer status is awesome... But I can't see him altering much in the upcoming slaughter of all humans.

Arya is developing somewhat as expected, my favorite chapters at this point. It isn't exactly the route I thought she'd go, and the longer she chills in Braavos, the less chance I think we have of her homecoming and uniting with Nymeria.

Davos was an awesome POV, it was pretty sad to see him disappear halfway through the book, but it sorta makes sense. Ship voyages aren't very fast. It read like Martin wrote more chapters for him, but chose to delay them until Winds of Winter.

Dany's been incredibly annoying from her decision to rule Mereen onwards, I *hope* she'll shape up a bit with her second rebirth. Her constant thoughts of Daario are worrying, though. Maybe Victarion's red priest and Marwyn can straighten her out a bit before the whole saving the human race thing.

The Connington angle was pretty crazily out of the blue for me, but it's going to be inconsequential. Varys is working as hard as he can for the realm, but I don't think he's taking the north into account as much. The Golden Company will die like anybody else when others or dragons come.

TL;DR - I think Martin's heading the realm to destruction. The wall won't hold without Jon, and would have a hardtime holding the wall even with Jon being the chosen one of rhollor. All of this said, Bran or Melisandre might be able to use the magic of the wall to some extent, but I don't think it will change the outcome. Westeros will be massacred, and Dany or Victarion will invade by sea to reconquer.

I know who they are. The end of Jaime's only chapter had Brienne requesting Jaime come with her to save "a Stark daughter" from the Hound. Its simply from eating oldmeat in dragonstone and drinking bad water in the stream.




Im not sure what i thought of the book.
It kinda annoys me that as soon as you read the parts of davos/rickon and aegon jr/connington you instantly realise "oh well here comes a new storyline that will take up 50% of the 6th book without actually advancing the story".

If stannis is actually dead, which i doubt, this just reinforces the feeling of a never ending bookseries about pop up kings which annoys the shit out of me~~



also jon is now the 2nd commander in what, a year, to get slain by their own brothers, talk about shitty job

No, but considering the utter crap that Herbert Jr. foisted on the world do you really want that? Not that the original was that good either, mind you; I found Dune to be one of the most overrated sci-fi attempts.

Besides Jordan has already done the whole milk until death without finishing anything and Martin hates a copycat.

ASoIaF is very loosely based on the wars of the roses in British history (Starks and Lannisters vs Yorks and Lancasters, brothers Stannis and Renly vs the Stanley brothers who betrayed the king, etc etc). If we accept that Martin decided to keep with a parallel in that regard for the finish of the book, it's believable that Aegon will fulfill the role of Richard III, take it all from the good rulers before him (in this case everyone competent is being murdered by various people who don't want good rule in Westeros), and then lose it all to Martin's version of Henry Tudor (Daenarys).

Dany - Going back to her roots and becoming Khaleesi again. Really glad to see this change from douting Queen.
Victarion - Bad ass mofo, my new favourite character (anyone who fights on ship deck in full plate while sending souls to the Drowned God is awesome)
Jon - Much more depth and he's grown into a decent character, at first I thought he was whining and walked around with his mouth open suprised by everything. Now he's standing up to Kings.
Reek/Theron - Really just a pitiful character
Asha - Zena, Warrior Princess
Prince of Dorne - lolwtfbbqpwn
Jon Connington - New character who will lead the storyline well.

I was left largely unsatisfied by the book, just as in AFFC you get to the end feeling that not much happened. It's all 3rd act prep; and not nearly enough Arya.

Danny regressed and was uncharacteristically unassertive, reactive to problems rather than proactive in anticipating the actions of others and taking the necessary steps to outwit opponents as she had in the past.

Jon finally comes into his own and morphs from a whiney little boy with entitlement issues into a strong, assertive and empathetic character... and then promptly gets killed off. :|

Tyrion mopes about in a brown study for much of the book, has the most appearances as a POV and adopts quite possibly the most annoying minor character to date in Penny. Not much arc in this book.

Jaime and Brienne are mentioned only cursorily - two of the best characters in ASOS, especially Jaime who has had a great arc and development from the first books into what became a complex and likeable character. I expected a few more chapters here.

Arya continues her faceless master training albeit at the expense of some of the endearing human qualities and naivete which made her an interesting POV in earlier books.

None of this would be that bad except for the fact that it will likely be at least 5 years before the next book, if there ever is one - and the plot is rapidly unraveling into a ball of yarn with the introduction of new characters, becoming more complex when the reader feels the story should be drawing towards a gathering and resolution. At this rate there needs to be at least 4 more books to resolve current plotting issues, and I just don't see that kind of longevity happening for GRRM, unfortunately.

The writing is excellent, the characters vibrant, but the plot is dragging.

I think it's more than that, there's some heavy foreshadowing there with the blood. I agree it's not flux, but I don't think it's just the bad water and spoiled meat either.

Yeah. Stannis is not dead, honestly I think the whole letter thing is a fake, a plot by some of the black cloaks and either Selyne or Melissandre to either remove Jon as an impediment to Stannis (if Selyne), or start the process that turns Jon into Ahzor Asai, (Melissandre).

Stannis isn't dead, Mance sent the letter and the battle hasn't even happened. The banker informed him of Karstark's planned betrayal, Manderly has planned a betrayal of the Boltons, and also Reek and "Arya" were with Stannis - if Stannis had been crushed, Ramsay would have found Arya and Reek. Ramsay hates the word bastard, which is in nearly every sentence of the letter. Mance often used that word to anger Jon. Also there was no seal on the letter, just a smear of wax.

Dany is dumb as shit. Penny and contemplation on where whores go made Tyrion's chapters pretty bad. Quintyn's chapters were dumb. Jamie's plot didn't have any actual resolution, and instead just gave us an extension on that particular cliffhanger. Bran and Davos could have used more chapters.

The book is missing two climaxes (Stannis vs Boltons, and Dany with Dothraki/Barristan with Unsullied/Victarion with Iron Born vs Slaver's Bay.) and could have had 30% of the travelogues cut out. This book had a ton of poor editing decisions due to a rushed deadline on the editor.
