I've seen cases of suicide clusters arise in top universities, so the nature of the average members of a group has little to do with it, really. Sensationalist media (in this case, "gaming journalists" that will take this subject and run it to the ground harder than reddit does to a meme) will be to blame if one arises in EVE.

I don't think there was anything wrong with this scam and those of you involved did a damn great job in getting all that ISK from that guy.

That said, there are two things to take into consideration here. Firstly, personally, I couldn't live with myself knowing that I drove someone to suicide over internet pixels whether I had done anything 'wrong' or not. I'd hope that while we all sling shit round here and on EVE for teh lulz, most of us are able to differentiate our online characters with our IRL moral selves.

Secondly, I'm not a Goon and I've never been a Goon but I do think the aura they give, the reputation they have and some of the stories to come from there are fucking brilliant. And a lot of those things have come from some of the great scams Goons have pulled in the past.

However, if this dude was retarded enough to kill himself over this, I think there would be a huge shift in opinion over Goons. I'm not suggesting that's fair and I'm not suggesting Goons should give a fuck what all us publords think, I just think it would be a pity if some of the great things Goonswarm have achieved in EVE was somehow devalued by a dumb fuck with bread knife.

Best solution to get out of this? I don't suggest that the scammers give the ISK back but it may be worth Goon leadership considering giving him some of his ISK back. If he gets 40b (for example) back, Goons still end out 'up' and this dude can go on and buy a new character and build himself a new career within the game hopefully having learned something. 40b is a drop in the ocean for an alliance the size of Goons. Note, I'm not saying he deserves the ISK back, I just think it may be the best way for this shit to play out for good of all involved.

But what the fuck do I know.
