-A- generally won't fight unless they vastly outclass their opponent, either through numbers or composition. The only exception to this is Tengus because they're exceptionally difficult to pin down, and even then they'll rarely commit. Makalu or Malaku or whatever the fuck he's called will try to wormtongue his way into it being a win for anything; He's trying to reframe their alpha Loki gang as a "moving op" now that he won't fight.
The amount of cognitive dissonance you need to have to be in -A- is almost obscene.

Oh, yeah, blueballing Vee is definitely a bad idea.
Well, technically, when -A- told RA to move into north Delve, the idea was that they'd help with regional defense (like CSAAs!), but RA, being helpful with anything...yeah, no. Whatever, doesn't matter. PL/TEST knew that hitting CSAAs would cause things to be ratcheted up, so it gave you guys a perfectly ample casus belli to invoke your own escalation. Of course, it's best if you don't even bother pretending that said escalation needs a reason to it: you've got the forces, so you might as well use them.
Pretty sure we didn't "ratchet things up" after the CSAA, only after you dudes stopped fighting.
I've already said earlier, we were here to farm you, not fight you. Now that you're trying to run off into the barn instead of getting kicked around the field we're just burning down the barn instead.

Yeah, that's the point. As soon as you decided to not be our punching bag we started demolishing the gym. If you don't wanna give us fun, we'll purge you and then find it somewhere else.
Warband does make a good point, though: the early weeks were less "punching bags" and more "sparring partners". The big shift in approaches (at least from S2N's perspective) came when PL began being more liberal with their capital/supercapital advantage, which changed combat dynamics in a way that S2N cannot respond to without starting force escalations that it has no way in heaven or hell of winning (at least w/o something extremely irregular happening in S2N's favour; <3 Black Legion). In strictly subcap engagements I feel it is fair to say that S2N has acquitted itself more-than-competently, but this is EVE 2012 and strictly subcap engagements are so 200...7?.
I didn't say he didn't make a point, but when a superior force comes into your region and literally says "You can keep your space as long as you keep fighting us" and then you stop fighting us, we're going to respond in an even less fun way.
