I've noticed that there's a pretty big disconnect between the general consensus of kugu and what's actually happening. It seems enough people have said it in this thread that people are taking it as fact.
Not sure if this is the right thread to post this, but tomorrow at 22:00 EVE or so IRC will be bringing as many ships with a rifter-like hull to VFK as we can find, all are welcome. We don't intend to bring the ships back. A little tribute from us.

It's been a long time since I've posted here, and even longer since I've played Eve. I never encountered Vile Rat personally, but I read his posts, made fun of his tattoo, and, most importantly, spent a great deal of time in a world he played no small part in making. The battles I fought and the people I fought alongside were the way they were because of him, and my life wouldn't be the same without him. Even though I've stopped playing Eve, I'll still sorely miss him, and I can only extend my deepest condolences to his family and friends.

My first contact with Vile Rat was just after the ASCN war ended Dec 2006-Jan 2007. Intrepid Crossing, newly formed from a pair of ex-ASCN corps had just been kicked from Feyth by BoB. We made way for what was new land in Drone space. The Goons had already grabbed up what is now Etherium Reach so as the alliance diplo I was pointed to Vile to try and negotiate a new home. I felt victorious because I got him to include the lube free in our deal...he was a smooth operator.
I had many conversations with Vile over the following years, in game, some on Goon TS and he would stop by occasionally on our vent to "check up" and gather info as he was always doing. I never met him IRL, I didn't know him IRL but he was a class act and I know that because it showed through his Goon persona. He would let that persona down occasionally talking about a busy life and such, shooting the breeze and you could see he was a smart, witty and a very logical thinker.
I haven't played in over 18 months but reactivated my account with some of the ISK just wasting CCP database space and logged in tonight. I looked at my contacts and there was Vile Rat, a contact of mine since 2007. It was surreal reading a random MSNBC.com new article about "Gamers Mourn American killed in Libya". I clicked the link, saw an Eve station picture and a few lines in saw the name Vile Rat. It's just fucked up is what it is.
RIP Vile.

Stomach is still in knots over this. Been travelling across country all day and I am just very sad. I never met Vile Rat but I was damn sure well aware of him. Guys like him made this game great and interesting. I am proud that truly great people like him worked for our country and the WORLDS benefit. I am also proud to say that I "knew" him. Even if it is only through pixels and pew pew. From ol school -A- and the complicated relationship our alliances have had - rest in peace mate. A spectacularly sad day in so many ways. Fuck.

Vile Rat was a great man who's life impacted so many people. Sitting here reading all these posts 24 hours later.. it still seems surreal.
All we can do now is try to make things okay for his family and make sure he is never forgotten. His children deserve that.

This. I didn't even know Vile Rat personally yet today has been a constant cycle of sadness, confusion, and unfocused anger for me. It's one thing when you see this shit happen to random people, but they are usually just a sad number and a faceless name. With this whole thing it has felt all too personal.

I've been holding off posting in this thread, TEST forums, themittani.com, etc. Unlike Mittens in his post on themittani.com, I'm completely unable to be a sensible, non-violent person when my head and emotions are intertwined so deeply. So, when I woke up and read the GSF broadcast (has that been a day? Almost 2 days now? Wtf.) about this whole... event, I couldn't really wrap my head around it. VileRat? The dude that we had played Eve, and DayZ with? The dude who legitimately showed interest in HTF when we were playing around in Delve? We were nobody, and he was a top-tier Goon. The guy who had laughingly refuted the claims that becoming a diplo was a highway express to burning yourself out? Surely not. There must have been some kind of mistake. After all, there are billions of people on this earth, and VR was an internet spaceship buddy. Must have been someone else. So for the rest of the day, I heard my co-workers at the restaurant I manage, and even the owner, talk about the "Tragic attacks in the Middle East". To them, it was just one more soldier, one more official, some nameless stranger passing into the void. Sure, he had a family, but children lose their fathers everyday in the life of war, and wives lose husbands. At some point, my subconscious had labeled it something different. It wasn't just an attack on a US consulate in Libya, it was an attack on my Internet family. Because, I've put so much time, money, and effort into this fucking game, the communities surrounding it, and Eve as a whole, TEST & GSF are literally an extended family of mine, and in some ways, I like most of you more than the pitiful excuse I have for a family. You're all my bro's.
So when I finally came home and realized that the news hadn't changed from that morning, and had only solidified the facts that he was indeed gone, I broke down. It's one thing for someone to die, someone you expect to die. An old relative, a sick friend, or really anyone that you know from the real world. But gaming is my haven, my place where I don't think to worry about the perils that plague mortality. You know when you get home each night that your friends are gonna be there on mumble, ready to give you some shit over that girl you hate at work, or taunt you for having a soul and feeling bad about firing someone. They're granite. They are a permanent fixture in your life; they should be. This struck such a terrible chord within me that it's taken me the better part of two days to understand it, and begin to wrap my head around it. You guys are supposed to get podded, not disconnect to never return, and in the process, leave behind a wife and two kids, all the while doing what was absolutely right, even until the very end.
There are two people directly responsible for making me want to become a diplo, VR and BottleofMilk. People I look up to, people I had a deep reservoir of respect for. The political climate in Eve is a volatile one, and these two people directly influenced my desire to do this one thing. Although I haven't exactly realized and pursued my interest in becoming an internet spaceship diplomat, I know that if I did, I would be all the better for it having interacted with VR. He literally shaped the playing field for the rest of us. I am a relative latecomer to TEST in comparison to many others, but that doesn't make my interactions with him any less important to me.
R.I.P. man. Hopefully the assurance that your family will be cared for by your internet friends brings some solace in whatever beyond awaits

It's a weird thing, having the foundations of idealism rocked. You expect death in the real world; it's a naturally occurring event. But gaming? You don't expect a friend to die, especially in such a monstrous and senseless manner. The friends and enemies I made in Eve Online were a solace, a Godsend. Where my friends were every bit family, and my enemies gave me an actual reason and purpose to login and play. This has just shown me that the world really isn't that big. There may be billions of people on this planet, each within a different sect of idealism and their own beliefs, but so long as there are people like Sean Smith to spearhead the areas of unrest and discomfort, there is always hope.
I just hope I never have to fucking write another post like this again.

It's the mark of a man when so many people are moved by his passing. I'm sure like many people I didn't know the guy personally but I think back to the sheer amount of time I have spent on this game, and one way or another how much of that time was been directly or indirectly impacted by things Vile Rat did - much like ripples on a pond. Like I said I didn't personally know the guys - and the loss that many of us internet nerds are experiencing is dwarfed by the tragedy suffered by his family, but his passing leaves both the game and the community much diminished. RIP Vile Rat, I'll endeavour to get embroiled in a blue-on-blue diplomatic incident in your memory...

This is a terrible, terrible loss. What others have said, how "internet spaceships" are the un-moving foundation, an escape from the real world (in all it's horrific, dull glory) hit home with me. I didnt know Vile Rat in game or out, only from this forum and reading of his exploits, but any loss of life through murder is pointless and really makes my head spin. As soon as the donation site is up and running I will give all I can afford to ensure his little bee's want for nothing.

A long time ago, I had attempted to open a conversation with Vile Rat, wanting to ask for advice concerning an issue. I fully expected Vile Rat to ignore the conversation, block me, or tell me I was a dumb ass. Because he was a "goon", but I always heard/read good things about the man.
The issue I was having, we had just started the alliance Wildly Inappropriate.(dot), and were renting out space from Razor Alliance in Branch. However alot of the northern block didn't want to blue us. But no one really gave us any trouble but IRON Alliance. They had members coming up to our space and shooting us, then docking up, rinse and repeat. After continous talks with IRON's diplomats concerning the issue and basically getting the big "fuck you" from them, I figured I would ask Vile Rat what to do.
After explaining to Vile what was going on, he gave me two words and then didn't say another word for over a half an hour. His reply? "Shoot them."
So we did, we took a small time fleet down to IRON's then home system and pretty much face raped their entire fleet. They looted the field and technically *won* the engagement, but we had a blast and tore their ships to shreds in their very own home system. After that I got a conversation from Wulfnor, Razors current head diplomat, asking what was going on, so I explained it to him, he laughed and said ok. Later on I spoke with Vile Rat again and told him what went down, he laughed about it and said "thats great, its IRON and I am sure they wont be around long anyhow." Sure enough, BoB did their MAX campaign, and guess who had to move out.

We might have been enemies in game, but after all, we belonged to the same team - EvE players. And VR had contributed to this team hugely.

What can be said that has not already? The man was a EVE community figure, well known often to those without Kugu and without extensive interaction to the CFC Empire. I hope his family can find some small amount of solace in the fact that his name will not be forgotten, built into the political fabric of EVE and written in blood in the history of international diplomacy.
My condolences to his familiy and RL/ingame friends. May he RIP.

Did some epic shit together, will miss you mate.
Today I walk into Ethics class and wouldn't you fucking know it, on the screen my teacher has the very film that, as a result of its creation, killed Vile Rat. Here I am in class, the last place I expect to be thinking about him, and all I can do is barely contain myself from bursting into rage. This unsightly piece of shit movie, with terrible green screening, jump cuts, bad acting, and unrealistic plot was the catalyst that killed him. Ethics indeed, fuck me, that was a fun hour and a half.
I didn't know Vile Rat all that well other than Kugu posts, but I knew he was passionate about this piece of shit game, and he's earned a great amount of respect throughout the community. I can't really say anything other than I offer my sincerest of condolences to his family. RIP.

Never flew or talked with the man, but knew of him. Sounds like a hell of a guy equally liked OL and IRL. He died for his country, although I'm sure it's little solace now.

I dealt with Vile Rat once, before I was even in Goons, and he made an impression on me that was way beyond normal.
The impression of someone who didn't talk down at me, a total stranger, with nothing to offer, who was a little scared to even be having this conversation. He listened, reassured me, gave me solid advice and was too polite for EvE.
They say character shows on how you treat someone with nothing to offer you, maybe that's what this was, maybe he was just used to drip honey as he talked, or maybe both.
In any case, I was more than a little shocked by the news I just heard, too shocked for some random guy whose posting I liked and had a 10 minute dealing once.

I'd like to thank all of you for the kind comments about Sean. I worked with him and we both have the same job for the Dept. of State. I thought that you may like to know why he was there till the end and didn't leave with everyone else. One of the requirements of our job is that we control all of the Secret and cryptology equipment at Embassy's and Consulate's. While the non-essential staff were allowed to get out, he had to stick it out until everything was destroyed to keep it from falling into hostile hands which could put more lives at risk. He was a great Communicator and friend and he will be missed in our small community as he will be missed in yours.

I logged into Facebook last night and someone had posted pictures of them dragging Stevens' body through the streets. So I feel your pain. Everybody grieves differently, but it's the people that *aren't* actually grieving that fuck it up.
Not that I'm saying I knew him well and am in deep grief or something, but I think we all feel a little connected to this, the Jabber chat alone is enough to freak any of us out. People always say "shit just got real," but now we have a new standard for what that means.
