All I know is that Dust just looks like BF without the community. If it's released solely for PS3 only a fraction of EVE players will join it, so God only knows how CCP plans to be competitive with their virginal stab at the FPS genre.
I'm not disputing that people will try it, but like somebody else said, what's to keep people playing it, especially if it's a low-quality carbon-copy of BF 2142?
So what we are saying is that Dust was dead at Fanfest?
But guys, there is seven years of passive training to accomplish. Once they try it they'll obviously have to stay till the end.
Let's assume that PVP in Dust is fun, and sizable Dust corps emerge. What is the incentive to take a contract from an Eve corp, if all it gets you is the opportunity to get blapped from orbit and lose everything? Taking out Eve ships has to be the most awesome thing in the game or no synergy will ever develop.
This post happily existed in all possible states before you observed it. Now it has collapsed into a single state.
I hope you're satisfied, fuckwad
I don't really think people need some complelling reason to try it if it free. They would need a compelling reason for people to stick with it, and i'm assuming CCP is banking on gameplay to keep people intrested. We'll see what happens, if it fails it will be ported to PC sooner then expected to infuse new players onto the battlefield.
Also that OP was awful, if your not even gonna try don't bother.
If it is a F2P FPS on the PS3 I know someone who will probably at least try it out. If they ever add the ability to play poker with isk using an in-game method (like I dunno, walking in stations) then he'll definitely be hooked.
?"eve's a bad mmo, really bad, it's only saving grace is the people playing it, which i guess doesn't say great things about the people playing other MMOs"
I want to be able to look down on the war room from a balcony and heckle them Statler and Waldorf style. I mean if we're going to share local anyway...
Actually come to think of it that could be a stealth nerf to local intel. 'Oh god 30 reds in system wait I can't tell the capsuleers from the dust bunnies fuck I am pointed and dead'.
K(awaii)ugu(u)tsumen
I am still hoping they have to come in some kind of drop ship and that you can kill the drop ship at a gate camp or whatever and watch them fall out, burn and then freeze. It would make for some cool videos for a change.
Eve has like 300 subscribers who happen to each have 1000 accounts.
Oh, I'm sorry, for a second there I thought you were talking about World of Darkness, a game whose universe is totally unrelated to EVE Online: Internet Spaceships and General Faggotry.
It seems pretty clear to me that CCP is marketing this FPS to EVE players and the F2P thing is a gimmick that wouldn't be necessary if it actually had the quality of standing on its own two feet.
I haven't played it so I can't really talk about the quality of the game, but it doesn't look that bad, doesn't look as good as crysis, but look at the hardware it's running on.
I'm not a console player but i like the way it looks and I like the way it links up with Eve, so I'm gonna give it a try. Should be interesting to see what happens if they follow up on what they said and make the sov game dictated by what happens planet side.
Actually, PS3 was the logical choice for DUST over WII, X360 and PC.
PC release would tamper with their current userbase
WII, just WII.
X360, with XBL being sub based to begin with kind of undermines the F2P idea out of the gate. Also Microsoft is as bad or worse about everything all the time, particularly patch sizes, server setup, free updating etc. Almost as bad as Apple and the iStore or whatever that shit is called.
PS3 ends up being the last one standing just cause the hardware is decent and Sony arent a bunch of niggerjews about hosting incremental free updates and whatnot and allowing the multiplayer to connect outside of the PSN.
Not really that i like the PS3, but its just the lease shitty of the shitty.
And with DUST being a strictly digital distro game there should be no problem porting it straight to PS4 or whatever its going to be called.
Obviously they would be very happy to have Eve players playing Dust as well, but the whole idea behind the integration is using the Eve universe as a hook/edge over other FPS on the market, thus bringing in a NEW market of players and $$$.
And the only reason they didn't realease on 360 was because Microsoft wouldn't allow connection through Xbox Live to the Eve servers...
Well I just plowed through a bowl of capellini del vino and apparently I didn't cook off all the booze because JD is making sense.
Hell, I just had a few gin & tonics and God knows if I'll ever lay hands on Dust, but I suppose I'll keep white knighting until there's no semblance of hope
Consoles are stupid.
Why the hell would I want to turn over total control of my gaming experience to a profit-driven third party that can either slather my hardware in ads with an update (MS) or take away features I paid for in an update (Sony)? Why the hell would anyone want to game on a platform where Big Brother tells Valve they are forbidden to patch TF2 because Big Brother thinks the updates need to be paid DLC (MS) or pay massive fees to have it be a free update for the same reason (Sony)?
And why would I want to be responsible for fueling business practices that are slowly destroying gaming (rejecting patches and telling the devs it should be paid DLC, bribing devs + publishers for "exclusives," outright lying to customers "Our console plays games in 1080P! We swear 99% of them don't get upscaled from 720P / slightly less than that! Really!", taking away features like Linux install & PS2 backwards compat in updates that are mandatory to continue playing games, forced updates that slather the UI in ads, bribing developers to delay content on other platforms, and all sorts of other unethical bullshit?
Oh wait. I wouldn't. Because I'm not retarded.
If you support MS and Sony console ventures with your dollars you should feel ashamed. Those two are actively harming the gaming industry.
You know, I understand being an activist about things like water consumption and plastic waste and CFCs (ChloroFluoroCarbons, not Clusterfuck Coalitions), but being that weird about hardware companies is sort of beyond me. Just wait for somebody else to buy it, let them rate it objectively, then decide whether or not to buy it.
First off, much like a grown ass man wearing a bowtie and selling bean pies telling you that Jews did 9/11, a guy named "X420X 5M0K3 W33D X420X" probably isn't the best medium for informing us of the evils of console gaming. Secondly, most of the "unethical" business practices you mention aren't. They're just business. One business giving another business money to provide a good or service isn't unethical. There aren't and have never been rules against paying for exclusivity with regards to video game platforms, or closely controlling the content on consoles.
And the reason people support them is because they're not the exclusive domain of turbonerds, so if I want to play MW3 with my non-turbonerd friends I can play it on my xbox.
And then, half a year later, modern wankers 4 comes out and you have to buy that one to keep up with your "non-turbonerd friends", because MW4 obviously has "much better graphics" (it doesn't), "is much better to play" (it isn't), and is thus now "the new cool" (nope), and anyone still playing the old version are just sad pathetic people who aren't keeping up with trends.
And they'd all get owned by a non-turbonerd using a proper controller.
MW titles only come out once a year, only cost 65 bucks, and the point isn't the gameplay, graphics, or cool factor. It's just a common point for socialization among us. It's the same deal as when everyone decides to hang out and you all have to pick a movie.
And you don't get stomped by someone using a "proper controller" because the different platforms don't compete with each other. If I'm using keyboard and mouse, then everyone I'm playing is too. If I'm using playing an FPS on Xbox and am playing against someone using a keyboard and mouse, then they are most assuredly a turbonerd. Just like the kid who wears cleats to a pickup baseball game.
I'm pretty sure you know this but you just compared MW4 to an outdoor activity with social value to tangible human beings.
QUOTE=JDizzleton;388738]And the only reason they didn't realease on 360 was because Microsoft wouldn't allow connection through Xbox Live to the Eve servers...[/QUOTE]
I know FFXI on xbox is connected to other FFXI servers, and they play with all the PC players, and they don't even need the XBL gold membership to play it, but what square enix did to get that deal I have no clue, but it could have happened. Suspect MS wanted to pinch every penny they could out of it, and didn't see that happening with a F2P game, so they told CCP to beat it.
You do realize that Microsoft has been fined millions of dollars by several developed countries (including the US & EU Trade Commission) for paying software developers to keep their software off of Mac OS and Linux right? That's the same exact thing they're doing with gaming. Regulators just don't care about videogames yet. But when they do (within 10 years probably) expect a holy reckoning to show up on MS and Sony's doorsteps.
Good job helping ruin gaming though.
Yea gaming really is at an all time low isn't it. I'm not even really sure what direction this is supposed to go. "Consoles are bad" maybe? Okie dokie then.
I really don't want to go into the specifics of the anti-trust cases against Microsoft and why what MS/Sony do in the console market is different. So I'll just instead laugh at you for being dumb because you actually think the situation is similar.
The reason console gaming is growing while PC gaming sales are declining, (and would have fallen completely off the map except for a handful of AAA titles), is that the console market brings class to the masses. Which has always been the way you dramatically increase market share. The less they design, build, and maintain for the hobbyist the more they can do for the consumer. Can you think of any product or service which has ever been successful once they made it more complex and specialized? Look at for example what most people regard as "pure" PC gaming today and compare them to the most popular titles of the early 90s. You go from incredibly complex and in-depth flight sims, strategy games, and adventure titles dominating the sales charts, to Quake and Warcraft 3. There is nothing wrong with that. Market demographics, existing players have a shift in interests and tastes, it just happens. The same thing is happening publishers and developers aren't carrying out some sort of blood vendetta against PC out of hatred, (hell MS would probably enjoy burying console gaming if they could as it would mean something like 85% of the gaming market share would have to be played on their software), instead they're doing what businesses do and following the money.
There are still more artsy independent designers out there and they are making interesting titles, but they can't buck the system and try to make an old school adventure or a flight sim with a 100 million dollar budget. Anymore than anyone is dropping 100 million on an exclusive title.
Shit's a business. You want art, go to a fucking museum.
http://www.vgchartz.com/
The 62.9 million PS3 consoles sold since launch, with 147,356 sold last week alone would indicate people don't give a fuck what you think.
PC gaming is spread out.
On consoles, the consumers rush in waves from one title to the next, leaving the old one completely dead with a very few exceptions.
On PCs, the number of games with large populations continues to expand out. A big game release does not kill all the other games on the market except if it the next game in a series, and even then publishers often do sales packs where you can buy the old game at a discount along with the new game so they get a big sales bump for the old game on top of sales for the new one.
Basically, the ceiling for profit for a single game on consoles is higher, but the chance to actually make a profit in the first place is harder to do because of vastly increased development expenses. On PCs you don't have to build an "AAA Title" game to make money, on consoles you pretty much have to.
No, it isn't.
You are retarded. It's the exact same thing in a different industry. Platform vendors paying developers behind closed doors to withhold, delay, or sabotage their products from competing platforms.
It's fake competition and unethical. It isn't real. It's not bettering your own product or changing its marketing / price to gain an edge, it's using your deep pockets to pay others to artificially weaken the competition. Modern capitalism exists because the theory is that the best products will win market support under fair competition. Paid exclusives and paid delays fit the exact definition of anti-trust. It is a large company using its monetary resources to artificially compete by hurting others' products. Paid exclusives / delays are not ethical nor are they what most regulators define as "healthy capitalism."
And if you can't have something completely withheld from the competition find another way to fuck with it. Pay for exclusive expansions, pay for delays on expansions, etc.
It is especially unethical because Windows gaming lacks a centralized authority that can fight back with the same underhanded tactics (though this might be a good thing when regulators finally smell the coffee brewing).
Also, MS wants to kill PC gaming. They have paid developers to skip out on Windows versions of their games because they can't be in complete control of a PC OS. They can't milk everyone as a middleman on PC. The only reason they continue to (slowly) develop DirectX is because Nvidia and AMD press them to, and MS knows the GPU vendors would run to OpenGL if they said no.
If you think MS owning a console is even remotely healthy for the gaming industry you are retarded. Sony isn't much better, but they are.
Because Blizzard and id Software titles have never sold well and haven't been attracting a huge followership for many decades. You probably could've made that sentence only worse with labeling Total Annihilation as one of those "incredibly complex and in-depth [...] strategy games".
(Also, a shooter which doesn't tell you to dock or take cover every few seconds [Doom 3/Quake 4] is quite "old school" complex - at least for the consolero dummies.)
You'd re-read your Adam Smith about the scale of markets (I'm rather sure he was writing about local/regional markets) and then your history books, in particular about European colonial expansion from the 14th/15th century on. And then reevaluate if our "Modern Capitalism" really has anything to do with fair competition or the actual opposite. The commodity coffee's a real good example for how global capitalism works.
The facts have a strong anti-A- bias.
I never said Quake and Warcraft 3 were in any way bad. They are amazing gaming experiences. The example was meant to show that gaming's dominate market group has always been evolving. If you went back to the early 90s and tell the PC gaming community that the guys making Commander Keen games would be heralded as some of the most influential developers in gaming history, flight sims would be a niche market that developers were attempting to find ways to simplify, and that publishers wouldn't touch a Tim Schafer project you'd be laughed right off the pay-by-minute BBS you were using.
The whole time that game design has been advancing theirs been some minority crowd angrily complaining about gaming being "ruined", and then in 10 years the same products that "ruined" gaming are being held up as examples of a golden age that were being "ruined" themselves without a hint of irony. Which I guess if Monkey Island or Falcon 3.0 or Quake represented some high water mark of gaming for you would be true, but it's hardly true for the increasingly casual gaming market who are moving boxes off shelves.
no need to get upset m8, not even like I'm ragging on your beloved PS3 here. All I'm saying is that Quake 4 was good compared to the other shit F/TPSes I bought on the Xbox due to a lack of good games. Saying "they don't make em like that anymore" sounds jaded, but they don't, and they were much more fun than Gears of Duty : Modern Bulletstorm 6 or whatever, the current crop of shooters.
Guess I should've got a PS3 instead, this anime thing you describe sounds interesting (also Uncharted series is baller and Blu-Rays would be nice)
