So, I've felt since about the 1st year of my playing Eve (04) that Eve. Sucked. Ass. And that it was long overdue for its funeral.
Eve will eventually die, it is just a matter of when.
What do yall believe will eventually kill it & when do yall think this will happen?
The day they need server space for Vampires.
Eve will never die, this is well known. It's too big to fail, the Icelandic government will subsidize it with mass bot accounts if need be,

Last time I checked people still play Ultima Online. That game is 20 years old. As much as Eve changes and evolves it will be around for a long time still I think.
Eve2 will probably kill Eve.

The game probably won't die any time soon since CCP are attached to it, there's no competition and there are lots of vets whose ego's are so attached to the game it would take armed intervention to get them to quit.
It's probably better to focus on the lifecycle. A game is healthy when there is enough development effort to keep the population steady or growing. In decline when theres not enough revenue to fund that level of development (which gets harder as the game ages) and which can become a negative feedback loop. And effectively dead when there's not going to be any more development (like Ultima or SWG) even if they choose to leave the servers running. I'd say Eve is in decline but it might be due to CCP being distracted by Dust and WoD and thus temporary.
When Dust comes out.
What will kill it is eventually they'll approach the break even point of their finances then cut development funding starting a downward spiral until they pull the plug 6 - 12 months later.
Given that people still play Ultima Online, EVE is safe for the foreseeable future.

Spaceships can suck a dick. They're already trying to go the long way around with incarna and dust, but someone will just take the straight route and scoop their ill-fitted, many-headed frankenstein-game.

Given CCP's history of introducing a new but incomplete mechanics or gameplay approaches and leaving them in such a state for quite long periods of time means that that list is ever growing. Eventually there will be more half-assed broken shit than anything else. That will kill EVE.

It'll be a long, long time. There are still people playing EQ1 FFS. Lots of them. To actually kill it, it'll probably take some completely game changing technology, like workable Virtual Reality, with which it won't be able to compete without a complete re-write.
The only other thing that could kill it would be CCP rolling out several flops in a row and going bankrupt. In that scenario they'll follow the grand tradition of selling Eve to SOE, who will be more than happy to run it into the ground.
Absent the IRA bombing the server farm or other unpredictable catastrophic events, god himself cannot sink this game, because we would tell him to suck a dick and pod the bastard. EVE doesn't live in just a niche that will not die; it has fortified its niche with high walls based around a range of social interaction simply unavailable in other online games.
Eve will never die.
At some point it will be an out of date, free to play MMO but it will stick around. Even if the only people playing are South Koreans. People still play Counter Strike. Someone mentioned Ultima already. There will always be nerds who want to play with space ships.
Slapping a "II" behind a title is something, I think, MMOs are growing out of. Square Enyx got a kick in the nuts with thier latest attempt at a never ending franchise. Expantions have the same effect without costing the developer as much money. What worries me is when will CCP decide that a shit update like Incarna should cost $20 bucks. That decision will reduce the playerbase faster than anything I can think of.
EVE will continue to get updates until CCP is gone due to a volcano blowing Iceland below sea level sometime in 2016. Then EVE will continue without updates until interfacing with a keyboard and mouse is as out dated as a telegraph.

I suspect the biggest risk for EVE will be CCP going bankrupt at short notice.

It's worth noting that subs are as high as they've ever been. The :FUCK CCP: bittervet community on forums like here and FHC are a small minority. The great majority of players aren't aware of these things that we rage about, and it wouldn't bother them much if they were.
For the average dude, there is no lag problem, and the UI gets improvements, and he thinks the CQ looks pretty boss. CCP making changes to the mission skills was far more important on aggregate than anything we get excited about.

Eve is not near death, although losing 5k accounts for the war on bots (i know they're bots, but still lost accounts, resulting in a smaller plex market size), and now another 5-6k for people raging on monocles (i know those are wownoobs, but still lost accounts), is the first time i see it losing accounts substantially. There was another substantial subscriber loss earlier this year/late last year, but that turned out to be temporary (people tried other mmos, they sucked, came back). 10k lost accounts, and still counting. They can still recover from this. I agree that eve will die when a substitute comes out, as always happens with mmos. Right now, the proposed alternatives are even worse than eve. Anyone tried perpetuum (for example) ? Really that game makes me wonder why those (unter)people are allowed to code.

With regards to eve, it'll live for at least another year so we can ask this question once more then.
Those charts are from mmogdata which admits a lot of its numbers are basically guesswork. That said I do think all the pressures on eve are negative at the moment and the natural trend of retention for an older game is downwards. It will be interesting to see how many people did unsubscribe, whether CCP can recover the loss of faith and make believe good stuff is coming but that will take months to be visible. It is also going to be fun if null-sec goes stagnant whether null-sec drove the games economy or was just the caboose on the back of empire.
Eventually there will be no actual players, just bots and bitter vets who log in to change skills. Does that count as death?
Eve died to me a year ago and i don't miss it at all.

So here is my worry, how long will eve be running? i was sad that my E&B account went nova as were those of you how had your own,(but u will enjoy EVE more), but how long can CCP keep eve running? is there a time scale, i dont want to get more involved if a year down the road the plug gets pulled, and would love to be told that eve will be around for at least 2 years moreEVE will be alive as long as CCP keeps making money off of it, simple enough. I have no idea myself, but one of two things are inevitably going to happen soon.
1. The server gets upgraded, replaced, or we get a second server because of the player load. I heard Tranquility can handle 10,000 players at once, but apparently, 8,000 are giving it some trouble already, and the number seems to be growing. I don't doubt it can handle 10,000 players, whether or not it can handle them efficiently and effectively is the real issue.
2. CCP decides to close EVE and work on something else. I probably don't have a right to throw that idea around, but from what I understand, CCP is going to be working on a lot of different projects in the future, and the frequent server trouble stirs my thoughts. Even so, I still retain my faith in the people of CCP

There's no point joining a dif game with slightly better graphics and stable server when the gameplay is exactly the game.

When WoD fails a year after launch (if it ever launches) CCP will go tits up. Icelander's are stubborn people (I'm a descendent of them and my whole family are stubborn ass holes) and as such will be unlikely to hand over EVE to some other company to be run even as a F2P mmo. Instead they will hold on to it in hopes that it will be reborn, an event that will never happen.
