    Default RPG's

So after recently beating fable 3, mass effect 2, the witcher 2, and a few other games, I am once again bored. Could you guys list a few games that I possibly haven't played, that are on PC? Oh, and there was a whole thread about arcanum. I couldn't even make it to the first city, I got bored.

I'm looking for open world RPG's preferably, but any RPG will do if it is good at this point.

Space combat simulators are awesome as well, but I could never get the hang of x-3. Something a bit more user friendly would be nice.

And if you could somehow combine those two elements into a game that isn't star trek online, I would be incredibly happy, though I am fairly sure no such game exists.

    Cheers!

Freelancer is fucking awesome for space flight adventure pew pew stuff. Neverwinter Nights is a great DnD style RPG.

star wars knights of the old republic is also really good as is the sequel.

    NWN2 has a better story

NWN's story wasn't that great but NWN has the Hordes of the Underdark expansion pack which was pretty cool.

NWN 2's story is actually kind of...railroaded. Hard. It's like they wanted to simulate what a bad game of D&D felt like, and they did. The same can be said of the first expansion to it, which also has the issue that they spend the whole game building up to a fundamental, cosmology-altering act, and yet in the back of your mind you know WotC will never let you do it. (And they don't.) The third expansion, Storm of Zehir, is actually pretty fun though.

If you haven't played Jade Empire, I've heard good things. It's on my list. Dig out an emulator and the two Baldur's Gate games if you can.

For Western RPGs the fallout series is always recommended.

X isn't exactly a space combat sim, more of an elite like sim. But for the best space combat sim ever you have Freespace. Can get freespace 2 off of gog for like $5 and then get the freespace open back with the freespace one remake and freespace 2 updated graphics. Freelancer as others have said, though not a huge fan myself. Tachyon the Fringe is also one of my favorites, then there's the gambit of star wars space combat sims. Wing Commander series (3 & 4 the best imo). And if you feel like playing an ok game with hilariously bad voice acting there's dark star. Independence War is also very decent.

I can vouch for Fallout too but I've never really played any of the others, not really a big RPG duder

Dunno what gamut means :< The original 2 fallout games are amazing, but I wouldn't really recommend them if you can't stand Arcanum. The new ones though are very different and still really good, although not quite as good. Also I wanna + rep you so bad for mentioning Skies of Arcadia (hi five) but can't yet :/.

[s]Arcanum.[/s] (Ignore me, I can't read) The one and only. Can't remember the whole name and can't be bothered to google it, you should find it if you want to. Almost like a steampunk Fallout, but better in my opinion.

Space Rangers 2 is also a game I recommend to try, as Chazzy already mentioned. I found the first one in the series to be a really nice game after Masters of Orion 2 started to feel a bit too played through. Also Masters of Orion 2, even though it's more of a strategy game.

I've heard a lot of people like GURPs. It's not my cuppa but there you go.

Traveller is pretty good; Mongoose released an updated version about two or three years ago and it is to date the only time my name has appeared in any credits anywhere (shameless plug).

I've always had a thing for percentile based games, mainly because I can understand decimal more quickly than fractions. I prefer the old versions of Runequest for reasons related to the mechanics but Mongoose has released an update to that as well and it's not bad. It's pretty well supported which makes up for the issues I had with the mechanic.

I've been out of PnP RPGs for a while so I can't recommend many.

None of these are Star Trek Online.

Basically, I'm just here for the rep because if there's a +rep circle jerk going down, I can't ignore the goings down.

    Or something like that.

Hey, I almost read the whole thing through. That's a 100% improvement from all my posts.
And if you want to take the easy RPG way out, there's always the JRPG way. But that's another thread and another post.

So, have you played Freelancer lately? RPG elements, strong space themes (!)....and a game I'd kill to see remade with the entire SP game as a single shard multiplayer experience

There's also Darkstar One in the space sim genre. Not as deep as the X series but fairly easy to play and get into if you can get over the awful voice actors.

In the RPG department: Fallout series (1 and 2 are very different from 3 and New Vegas gameplay-wise so even if you don't enjoy 1 and 2, try 3 and NV (or the other way around)), Baldurs Gate series, NWN 1 and 2 (the story is not it's strong point, except the Mask of the Betrayer expansion which is simply awesome) and Planescape: Torment (best story I ever saw in a game. But then again, the game is an interactable story with RPG elements and DnD combat in it really). Mandatory Elder Scrolls series reference and Star Wars: KOTOR in the offchance you never played them (try them if you never did).

For PnP RPG's, Unknown Armies and Eclipse Phase are both really cool- Unknown Armies is set in a modern-day world filled with really weird magic (like magicians that gain their power from a city, or watching TV, or drinking, or injuring themselves, and guys who mimic a collective archetype like 'The Warrior' or 'The Messenger' and gain powers from that).

Eclipse Phase, on the other hand, is set in a transhumanist future in which your mind is something you download into bodies ranging from uplifted octopi to robots (if you can afford a body, that is) and nanotechnology renders scarcity a thing of the past (assuming you live in the outer system, where there aren't governmental restrictions on what can be made through nanotech), despite Earth having been reduced to a cinder thanks to self-improving AIs gone haywire. You can play it is incredibly creepy horror where something can make an infinite number of copies of your mind and slowly torture to the brink of insanity them in a million different ways as you watch on in horror, as an intrigue-filled exploration of what it means to be human and how societies function in this strange yet familiar world full of anarchists with nanotechnology and immortal CEO's with literal armies at their disposal, or you can just sleeve into a bunch of robot gorilla bodies with laser eyes and radar-emitting diamond penises and run around blowing up shit with guns that fire nanobots or some shit.

DnD is kind of the classic PnP RPG- if you have friends who know 3.5 stick with that, otherwise I' recommend digging up an updated version of first edition or something. My advice is to stay away from 4th edition.

The 40k RPG's (Deathwatch, Dark Heresy, and Rogue Trader) can be good fun, although it can be tricky to really get the 'feel' of the 40k universe down right. There's currently a play-by-post DH game going on on this very forum, so you might want to check that out.

There are also plenty of interesting indie RPG's- Kobolds Ate My Baby and Og (where you play a caveman with a vocabulary of about five words) are great for getting drunk and playing for a couple hours, and there are some other indie RPG's like Dogs in the Vineyard or Polaris that focus more on personal interaction and story-telling rather than mechanics, which you might want to look into if you've never played before.

Anyone know of any good strategy games? I enjoy playing risk, but prefer something you can build an army and move up. I really really enjoyed Age of Empires 2, I have played civilliation but have not enjoyed it as much as AOE2. Any suggestions?

Eclipse phase is funny because its supposed to be an exploration of transhumanism and the highly dangerous byproducts of that, but then proceeds to tell you that mechanists are bad and shapers are good.

Its a good game with a nice call of cthuthulu touch, but the rules are a bit shit.

I've never played a game, but yeah the rules seem kinda haphazard. Some judicious houseruling might be able to fix that, but I'm not really sure where the problems lie apart from a general haphazardness and a weird rep system.

What do you mean about mechanists being good and shapers being good? If you mean the PC being evil and the outer systems being good, in Sunward its made clear that the average PC citizen apart from the clanking masses or the ones in indentured bondage (who both admittedly make up a lot of the population) enjoys a pretty good life and that life on anarchist or extropian habitats can actually be pretty weird and dangerous. Sure, Project Ozma are a bunch of assholes as are a lot of the hypercorps, but other hypercorps like TerraGenesis and Solaris seem to be pretty cool dudes. The Titanians are a bit mary-sue-ish, to be sure, but that particular society seems well-realized and interesting, not a utopia. Yes, the Jovian Junta is an utter shithole, but it's effectively ruled by the worst of the Republican Party crossed with a South American military dictatorship and only exists due to some extraordinarily inventive repression. Sadly the companion to Sunward that deals with the outer system doesn't exist, so none of those statements are really accurate.

I don't understand the combat system, and couldn't get past the bandits at the bridge in the first little town. And the ability to not be able to scroll beyond your characters sight frustrated me. It seemed like it would be a lot of fun, and I was actually really excited at first, but as I said I got stuck, and after about two days of trying gave up.

For all the other ideas, I've played Fallout I, beaten II, III, and New Vegas, playing neverwinter nights 2 again, but kinda got discouraged when I went on an unholy 6 hour gaming rampage, and forgot to save. (no autosave for some reason), and promptly died.

I've beaten both KOTOR games, and I wanted to play them again, but getting them to work on windows 7 64 bit seems impossible for some reason, no matter what I do.

I'm currently playing space rangers 2, just trying to get a basic feel for the game.

I've beaten the baldurs gate series, I got quite far in planescape, but my computer went boom and I had to reformat, never got back into it.

As discussed in the other thread, I have beaten every single elder scrolls game I can get my hands on, even the phone game and the very old ones.

I have played so many JRPG's, currently playing Final Fantasy I, Dragon Warrior II, Suikoden II, and Lost Odyssey for console games, and plan on xenogears after that.

I'm also playing wing commander 4 via dosbox, seems very good.

I haven't played Freelancer, other than a demo. A few things then, how Necessary is a joystick? Does it play on a new 64 bit operating system, what kind of RPG elements are in it? Do you mean like you get promoted and get access to new ships?

For those interested in strategy games:
The X-COM series is supposed to be really nice, I've only played the first game so my experiences limit to that.
The wiki pretty much explains the mechanics but in short, you command a base fighting invading aliens. Has a nice sci-fi feeling to it and the way the game generates a random game every time you start it is in my opinion really nice.

Edit: I think you can get the whole series on Steam.

Read my post above for space combat sims. But Arcanum (to me) is kind of like a cross between fallout and diablo. KOTOR is (iirc) on gog, probably for just a few dollars, and all their games are repackaged for easy installs and guaranteed to work on 7 and all that good stuff. Also your in luck they're having an interplay sale (so tons of awesome games) so you can grab Freespace 2 for cheap (like 3 bucks)? You can play with a mouse and keyboard (last time I did, but really you want a joystick for that).

Not really sure on the RPG elements in Freelancer... You do get promoted which gives you access to new ships but there is no stats to increase (iirc), just how good your ship is. A joystick is not required for Freelancer, it will work just fine with a mouse and keyboard, actually I prefer it :<

Well I'll buy whatever I can find, I think when I was talking about free lancer, I was actually talking about freespace, and got the two confused. I've never even heard of freelancer.

Ah, freelancer is decent . Freespace has no RPG elements. gog.com is great and definetely has freespace 2. Like I said a joy stick is not required but your definitely handicapping yourself and it will have some weird controls, but it is imo the best space combat sim ever made.

    freespace on gog.com $3. http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/freespace_2

    freespace open: http://www.fsoinstaller.com/

FSPort is the original upgraded (so you get 1+expansion and 2 with just 2 from gog.com)
    Silent Threat is the expansion

Also get mediaVPs and advanced mediaVPs (unless your computer sucks then just get mediaVPs), and of course the core FSO ones. The rest are fan made extra missions/campaigns which you can get if you feel like.

Yah it's not that hard, but if you don't have it I'd definitely recommend getting it from gog.com. Also makes installing fso easier as well.

Oh god, FS2. I love that game so so so much. Not an RPG bone in its body, but it's still astounding. In terms of fan-made campaigns, Blue Planet and the sequel Age of Aquarius are both amazingly excellent, and I've heard wonderful things about Derelict, although I can't get it to run on my machine.

Getting to Tarant is a pain barrier- from there on the game takes off. The starting areas aren't that bad imo, but things aren't signposted in Arcanum- no flashing quest indicators and no linear gameplay so its can be tough sometimes. You can talk your way past the gate thugs in a number of ways, or you can kill them in myriad ways, or you can pickpocket them for keys or you can do something evil for them and they will let you pass- i think the are really there to impress upon people that there are many ways to tackle a problem, even a simple one and to ensure that people that get past them have a character equipped to deal with the rest of the game in SOME way.

(I usually blow up the trio guarding the gate with dynamite or setup an ambush with spike traps and get the town guards to help)

The combat system needs you to read the manual to get the best out of it.

Still, the game isnt for everyone, it remains one of my favorites

I loathe anime. In any case, I'm stuck on a mission in Age of Aquarius. It's the one where You're in a gunship, and you have to destroy the retrofitted Orion in the rings of saturn. Whatever I do, I can't stop them from destroying the frigate. Either the bombers get it, or the subspace missiles do, or the corvettes do, or something. I'll give it a try though, it looks very interesting.

If you don't mind that it's a bit dated The Ur-Quan Masters (Star Control 2) is a very fun spaced based adventure game.

I've beaten it repeatedly, and the time limit before they come nuke your station pisses me off. However, the independent star control expansion should be released in the next couple of months (fan made) and the demo I played was FANTASTIC. Looking forward to that.

D&D Daggerdale is out now on Steam for $14.99.. No idea how good (bad?) it is or how RPGish it is - sounds like more of an action/hack/slash
game - but if you're dying for something new to play, there it is. http://www.atari.com/daggerdale

Oh, and there was a whole thread about arcanum. I couldn't even make it to the first city, I got bored.

I played the fuck out of Arcanum. Years later, I can _still_ rattle on about the various quests because it was that mind bendingly engrossing. Except. EXCEPT. For that fucking trap filled monstrosity of a shithole known as the Black Mountain Clan caveshitfuckfest. The rest of the game is the best RPG ever (fuck BG2, this was better).

The bridge quest is the lead in that explains to you how the rest of the game is going to work. See, unlike all those other lame ass RPGs out there, damn near every quest in Arcanum has multiple resolution paths. This is the one that teaches you which one you should be looking for henceforth.

Kill them all: You can do this with traps (pick pocket some dynamite on them, dump some traps up front and then get them to walk on it after pissing them off with, I dunno, a grenade or something), with brute force (SMASH. KILL. SMASH.), technology (make a shitload of molotovs and fling the whole bunch at them), magic (summon a fucking orc or three) or charisma (hire that Ogre in the bar, fit him out. He will eat them for lunch, fart, and then eat the wall).

Negrotiate: Convince them you are part of the thieves guild, or talk them into letting you through because you are hot/the town is not worth their time.

The Dark Side: break some shit in the town for a free ride and a tip about the thieves guild

Thiefery: pickpocket the key off the dude, walk on through

While this quest is great, my favorite quest is the Arblablah quest (that fucking dude). Basically, you talk to some dead guy who tells you to kill some other dude. That dude is Arblablah. He tells you the first dude killed his family, shows you the graves and then asks you to recover his holy thing. You go back and convince dead guy to reveal the location of his partner, who will inevitably die so that you can finish the quest. You can go back to Arblahblah, complete his quest line by giving him the thingy, and then kill him, take his shit and complete the dead guy's questline. That right there? That right there is why Arcanum is so fucking great.
