It only breaks the morale of the enemy if they themselves believe the myth of invincibility. Besides maybe in the Legion of the Pandemics, supercap pilots are among your least active and least gung ho players. Sure they'll all log in for the big "hellcamp" or timer brawl, but their participation quickly drop when they're shooting sbus across ten systems every day. Furthermore, the blob can't be everywhere at once, and the more you split it up, the more its psychological and actual power decreases exponentially.
Sure, 75 titans is really impressive. We should all be amazed. However, it will be 3/4 of that next time, and another 3/4 of that the time after. Then the numbers will slowly bleed away as people decide not to log in their 80b space penis to shoot sbus like it's a job. Isn't the Branch war about sov? So surely the only measure of how it's going is how much sov is taken or defended? The fight yesterday seemed to be about people just wanting to fight, they'd done all the sov stuff before it had started.

Ironically, you couldn't be more wrong. Who holds the sov is really only relevant insofar as it dictates what timers both sides might fight on should they choose to.
Sovwar is all about morale. Your target is the enemy players and your goal is to make them leave their alliance, not log in, or play like shit because they're demoralized. Then, when they represent no tangible threat, that's when you take all their sov. Until then, sov is just another possible venue from which to attack their morale and shape the discourse.
This sanctum is putting up more of a defense for their Pith Station than WN. did in BKG.

Actually reflecting on the strategic situation, this war will be won by whoever breaks down and hires PL first, which will be WN, so WN will win. I assume PL have positioned themselves for this and expected this outcome all along, which is why they really don't (didn't) want to see WN collapse before they could rally and have something left worth paying to defend.
If goons were smart, they'd hire PL now and drive this puppy home, letting future tech income from tenal, vale, and branch recoup the cost. However, they won't, so they'll lose.
This war just suddenly got far less interesting...

I don't see them as contradictory. The first quote was just a regurgitation of textbook, broadly-applicable sovwar theory, which then led to the contemplation of the actual specifics of this particular situation, which then in turn led to the second quote.
