PGP help needed

So - I am a total newb at email encryption etc. I need a way to exchange messages securely with a friend abroad, and i won't have an opportunity to see him in person to give him a key. With that in mind what is the best (free) option? Any suggestions for ninja'ing the key to him (if it matters)? I was thinking sticking it on an HTML page and hosting it somewhere for 24 hours or so and then taking it down.

Any other suggestions for communicating also appreciated if i am looking in the wrong direction.

If you study the migratory patterns of humpback whales or another suitably friendly ocean going mammal and your buddy doesn't mind living on the coast I am sure you can sort something out.

I have given it some thought Mr. Ransomlist.
My plan was to put Micro SD flash cards on every migratory bird coming to Iceland.
As the birds range in the millions. The data amount will be enormous.

Then its only a matter of time to shoot and collect all the birds.
Or we could set up some kind of a radar station to track the birds and then
with 2 jumbo planes with a huge net between them collect the birds.
I think that is prop more humane.

Or you could employ all the former icelandic bankers to chase migratory flocks cross country. Give them a net, some waders a laptop and a sat phone.

You would have to make sure you have sufficient replicates of your data transmissions, perhaps even using specific ancestral or geographical lines in tandem with mitochondrial fingerprinting to have replicates carried by specific subsets of the population. That way you could split a sensitive file or project into separate encrypted packages that require collection as geographically isolated locations and times that your carriers would return to unerringly year after year.

Another factor to consider is the amount or number flash memory devices that can be stored in a hollowed out narwhals horn. Brief microsurgery procedures and implantation of a usb/E-SATA/Firewire connector into the tip and you have a highly secure mobile data crypt. This is without investigating the possibilities inherent in lacing the horn with high range radio and sonar equipment and making use of its natural shape as an aerial.

I'm sure some kind of heat exchange system could be used to provide all the power needs of this setup.

Its ecologically sustainable security.

the whole idea behind public key crypto is that you have, well, a public key that you can send to
the recipient in the clear that he can use to encrypt things with that only you (with the corresponding
private key) can decrypt.

its called a public key because you can send it to him through public means (email, file transfer, carrier
pigeon, etc) without compromising security.
