A Swedish court has approved a request for the arrest of Julian Assange, the Australian founder of the whistleblower website WikiLeaks, over allegations of rape and sexual molestation.

The Stockholm district court's decision on Thursday could allow authorities to issue an international warrant for the 39-year-old's arrest.

The development comes nearly a month after WikiLeaks released classified military documents about the war in Iraq detailing torture, civilian deaths blamed on US and Iraqi forces.

"I request the District Court of Stockholm to detain Mr Assange in his absence, suspected of rape, sexual molestation and unlawful coercion," Marianne Ny, the Swedish director of prosecutions, said in a statement in English.

"The reason for my request is that we need to interrogate him. So far, we have not been able to meet with him to accomplish the interrogations."

'Out of proportion'

Assange has previously called the allegations against him baseless said that he had earlier been warned by Australian intelligence that he could face a campaign to discredit him.

Bjoern Hurtig, his lawyer in Sweden, said the prosecutor's petition was "exaggerated" and "out of proportion."

"He of course denies the allegations and opposes being arrested, and we do not think it is proportional to demand his arrest just to interrogate him," Hurtig told the AFP news agency.

A warrant was first issued for Assange's arrest on August 20 by another prosecutor, but was later withdrawn.

Ny reopened the rape investigation against Assange on September 1, but did not request his detention and allowed him to leave Sweden. He is reported to be currently staying in Britain.

WikiLeaks has angered the Pentagon with its releases of documents related to the US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The latest, in October, contained nearly 400,000 classified US files on the Iraq war, which Assange has said showed 15,000 more Iraqi civilian deaths than thought.

Will be interesting to see where the print media runs with these events, in the UK the Guardian is increasingly standing out as a paper internationally recognized for journalistic integrity and belief in free dissemination of information. It should be interesting watching to see which foreign office officials are recalled or ejected from posts over the next month.

As for the UK, the whole Helmland issue in the cables has come at an interesting time- we have a coalition Gov. and the third major party is the one that presided over most of the events referenced in the diplomatic cables. Criticism of David Cameron in the more recent ones is unsurprising given he hasn't been nearly so simpering as Brown/Blair (chiefly the latter) were and we have recently been strengthening military ties (and energy economy ones) with the French, something Labour deferred to the US over.

Strangely he has yet to be charged with anything- which is supposed to be requisite for that kind of warrant and during the ~1 month he spent in the country after the first accusations were filed and request for interview swedish authorities were evasive as to carrying one out in formal capacity.

Seems, if we wear tinfoil, that the whole affair is just to restrict his movement, issue a warant that ushers him into custody of a state and thus allow extradition somewhere. Bets on him ending up in America facing trial for something?

the original charge was apparently because he didn't use a condom when boning some chick who afterwards decided that she had wanted him to use one and that's against swedish law or something.

the only reason its being perused now is because of his status, he wouldn't go back to Sweden for a face to face with investigators but instead offered to do a video conference with them (something that is pretty regular supposedly) but against the norm they wouldn't allow that to happen.
