And sometimes leaders do have to be away from the game, and I don't think any of the hyper-competitive types at the top of the game are above taking advantage of that as soon as it's known. The timing here, as I understand it, is leader had to step back, then hostiles attacked, not the other way around. It's in no way an excuse. The cut-throat nature of this game is such that cultivating a deep "bench" is mandatory if you want to stay on top, unless you either have no life, or are willing to make Eve your #1 priority in life. First we beat the shit out of your pets, but you left them to die, wouldn't come fight us
Then we crippled and crushed HTA, you came, got the crap beat out of you by like 100 dudes (when you brought 7 alliances and like 500 people), after the initial battle, you didn't come back
Then we attacked C-J, and rather than fight, you stacked 900 people in the system to AVOID a fight entirely
Then, we raged, and attacked you all over the place, thinking, MAYBE, you'd come and fight. You didn't.
Finally, running out of options, we attacked 0-W directly, thinking theres NO WAY you could avoid fighting, unless you didn't mind ALL the rest of your space burning.

I've seen shit about the russians "accidentally" EUU and shit like that, you guys must be deluded on a never before seen level, EUU fell because it was literally camped for a solid week, the same way HTA lost TTP. The problem you described in 10 sentences can be described in 3 words - lack of leaders. You dont have anyone with a plan. Atm you only react to PL+Russians, and they ~control~ your game. As long as the initiative (not The Initiative.) is in their hands, you will loose, loose fights and loose morale.
You need someone, who can motivate and inspire people enough to log, fight and win. You did not come to EUU looking for fights. My little alliance got exactly three fairly evenly matched fights from you that I can remember. One we lost, one was a stalemate, and the other you ran from as soon as some of your vagas and cains started to get hammered.
Frankly, having fought all of you, we've got more respect for Red, and way more respect for Darkside, than we do for you. Those two bring a straight up fight. With you, it's all about the gank, and the spy, and the hot-drop, or some other cute angle. After you hot-dropped a half-dozen Macs on a domi to avenge the cynobal you lost to a bait Raven, we were done. Don't get me wrong, pressing the advangage when you have it, and using every cute angle you can think of is perfectly fair game, but then trying to say you're looking for "good fights" is lame, and there's no sense throwing a tantrum when someone calls you on it.

Basicly (as grath alrdy pointed out) U painted yourself in a corner by letting all ure pets die 1 by 1 more or less alone. Most of em was more or less "FUCK ATLAS" after a week or two of Graths crusades. Mainly not because we are by any means Uber, but more that they felt betrayd and left alone to die (and laughed at) by the ppl they have been paying in blood and isk to. You was the Strong corner that the pets could rest their shoulder at in times like that, but rather u felt like mocking em, and at best sending a symbolic relief force not suited for the task at all that died horribly giving us the biggest propeganda card we could ask for. "Your overlords can not save u".
I see many of the qualites or lack of quaities and signs from TPP currently in O-W.("PL cheats" claims ,1:10 local but still u will find PL controlling system, lack of proper FCs, balls and members loosing faith/not willing to risk asset because of lack of faith, members evacing their asset as best they can while driving bikes/unsubbing).
Now its your turn to get mocked at by your allies and left alone to rot.
PL are by no means experts in defending asset/space,(fountain anyone) but should you pick a battleground why not let the battleground be some pets space rather than waiting til ure sitting camped in ure main station. The "correct answer" in my eyes would have been to give the attacker as such a bloody nose in the beginning that they lost the faith that they could achive victory to a price they could accept. Waiting and letting em win nonstop for 2-3 mothns steamrolling your pets is basicly asking for trouble as the confidence level and "smoothness" of the warmachinery is skyhigh, tactics adjusted and well oiled by the time it hits u.
I've been playing for almost as long as Eve has been around, and I don't recall any major alliance putting up much of a fight to defend rental space, do you? If you're renting space, and you've got any smarts at all about how this game works, you make hay while the sun shines, and then don't give any back when things go sour. Its about the only way right now that a young alliance can hope to close the wealth gap with older alliances. If it wasn't you, it would have been someone else, if not this month, some other month. EUU was very very good to us.
as far as i can tell, the 6 or so people who have the ability to disband Atlas, still haven't done so.

Cool, but the isk didnt saved your space, it didnt make you fight, it made you soft and you just will move to get another renting spot, instead saying no and fight yourself up to the top. Cause thats the only way.
Its not in the isk, or lack of supercaps, its in the mind. You cannot buy yourself the way to the top, noone can.
The whole concept of renting space is pretty much making you shit and never ever achieving anything in this game outside being a slave for some fat guy shouting on you in ts and wanting his rent. So while its good for some carebears, its absolute dead for any group trying to be glorious pvpers like any FOTM group out there.
HTA did indeed fight like lions. The Orange will always have a standing invite to PL based on pure tenacity.

All of the sudden work and family and everything is in the way of EVEWhen they are owning then ofcourse there is a lot of time for EVE. Actually the whole argument is stupid. Thinking these people will have under control when PL+russians hit them without you helping them actively is sci-fi of highest lvl. Noone in eve outside of few groups would have it under control and seems you dont have it either.
Once or twice, but still, stands to reason that home space is home space, and rental space is a luxury to be cut loose quickly when it becomes more trouble than its worth. It's pretty noobish for a renter to think that they're paying protection money. Rent buys you access, no more, no less.
You sieged 0-W a few hours before EUU station was coming out of reinforced. I would have been amazed if Atlas had come riding to our rescue under those circumstances. I don't know if you planned it like that, or if it was a coincidence, but it no doubt had some effect on how things went down. Whether they were unwilling, unable, or just didn't think it was the right strategic move to fight for EUU, I don't think either you or I know. I for one don't feel slighted by them though. They rented me some very nice space in which we made some very nice isk, and improved a lot as an alliance. Fair deal in my book.

No, I'm not going to suicide fleets into super-capital blobs sieging my system with no backup just because it might suit you. Sorry. We've improved quite a bit in every regard while we've lived here, and we'll continue to, and your little speech here notwithstanding, yes, we'll have to get a lot richer and a lot better armed if we want to compete with older alliances. Unless you think that the 50+ super-caps in 0-W right now make no difference.
