I've been in my share of Goon Squads in MMOs and the one constant is that everywhere we go we have this absolutely terrible, infamous reputation, even before the Goon Squad starts up. People think we are cheaters, hackers, griefers, etc. Most of it is untrue (except for the griefing) but people have this irrational hatred or paranoia about us that honestly warps their decision making. We don't have to do anything because frequently other (stupid) parties act out of this fear or hate and do something that seriously fucks themselves without any effort on our part. OWN was like this, and they'll go off and tell everyone how the evil goonies orchestrated their downfall and stole their space and so forth and our reputation grows and the cycle repeats itself

Goons are hated/feared because despite everything they are still very good at making fun of things and revealing nerds' horrible pretensions about their shitty online games. A lot of MMO players take themselves entirely too seriously so they don't appreciate it when their spaceship empire or orc roleplaying is laughed at.
