Thread: And so the regretting begins.

Default And so the regretting begins.

So I'm still an extremely new player and I only have 2 months under my belt as of today. I chose minmatar as my weapon of choice because I didn't know what I was doing. I am now beginning to regret going with matar. Apparently anything above bc's and other races get the upper hand on matar in a lot of ways, or at least that's what I have been told. Since I plan on training up to and being a bs and up pilot it appears as though I have chosen the wrong path.

Are my regrets valid? Should I be training something different? Can I salvage my minmatar character?

Skillwise I am just finishing Assault Frigates(which I just found out are basically useless) and I'm gunna do a quick train to a Hound and then from that I'll go for a Cane.

I have no idea what I am doing, someone help me so I don't end up stuck in a Nagalnerf and wasting months and months of my life, only to buy a new character like a secret mistress because my first character just didn't have that spark anymore.

minmatar BS are terrible for PvE but PvP wise they got a substantial buff a few months ago, a dual-neut tempest is an excellent ship for baiting gankers and the maelstrom is a perfectly functional sniper

as for caps you can't predict what will be nerfed or buffed months into the future so don't bother, but right now the nidhoggur is probably the most solid all-around carrier

I'd recommend making a second account to use for making isk, whether it be a domi pilot for plexing or a raven pilot for missioning. If isk isn't the issue then your minmatar character will come in handy when you find yourself bored with BS fleet fights and burnt out on cap stuff. Minmatar have arguably some of the best interceptors and easily the best solo gank t2 ship in the game. The hurricane is nice when you don't have the isk to blow on a vaga or just want to alpha bombers and frigates. In high lag fleet fights having a massive alpha is really all that matters when cycling your guns can take 20/30 seconds on a good day.

    p. much what those guys said. But even the Mael isn't a bad PvE ship with its shield boosting bonuses. Its like everything mate - unimaginative idiots make over-generalisations that put you off your game. Minmatar is probably a slower race to skill up on (Projectiles, Missiles and drones) than some others - but not enough to can them. Keep going with it.

My first account was minny. then i made a second one as caldari. caldari are better for missions, but for all round fun i'd go minmatar any day.

Tempests are nice battelships, typhoons are awesome once you get your skills up. scimitars are awesome ships. and then you got the plain old rifter which kicks butt in terms of cheap fun.

Instead of training up an alt of another race, you could also just train other racial ships and avoid re-doing all the support skills. In the end you'll have a better and more well rounded character.

the race of your char doesn't really matter at all anyway, aside from the starting skills you get. there's no reason a minmatar char
can't train the ships of the other races as well. although you'd also have to train up other weapon types to go with them.

And even that got is far less impacting sicne Apoc-char creation than it was before.

So yeah, as mentioned above, there's no reason not to go for another race if you feel like it, especially if you're only 2 months in the game. That seems like a lot of skilltime for you now maybe, but if you make it through EVE for over, dunno, 1,5 years and more, you'll be surprised how your perception of skilltime changes. And btw, don't worry too much about caps and the road to them at the beginning. It's good to have a goal, still before you can really use them you'll be busy skilling for another 10 months anyways, no need to regret anything yet.

I think it was 1.5 to 2 years until I got into a command ship, which had been my goal since the second or third month of the game. To fly a ship well, you need to build up those support skills. Crosstraining is no big deal.

As others have pointed out, Minmatar excels in a lot of areas.

Dominion really buffed the projectile weapons. Matar fleet battleships (Maelstrom and Tempest) are now among the best in the game because of the alpha of artillery.
Autocannons also received a nice boost, as they now have 3 different close range, high damage ammunitions, with different damage profiles, making them more effective for both PVE and PVP.

Vagabond, Muninn, Scimitar, Hurricane and Sabre is among the very best of EVE's smaller shiptypes.

As for Capitals, the Nidhoggur is an excellent and versatile carrier. The Naglfar is somewhat useful, at least compared to the Phoenix, while the Hel is terrible compared to other Super Carriers.

In the long run Minmatar is a really great race, but it's pretty skill-intensive, as you need to train for both armor and shield tanking, and both missiles and projectile weapons, as the ships use a mix of those. The upside to this is that it is easier to later crosstrain to other races, once you have these skills.

You been getting told wrong old son, Minmatar excel in many areas for PvP and still have some solid PvE ships available.

I specced Minnie from day 1, only cross training Amarr BS for PoS ops, but I am back onto Minnie BS since the buff to projectiles and very happy with the improvements to the races ships as a result.

Minmatar are hands down the most 'fun' race for subcap ships and the best race to crosstrain from or to.

Now they don't have completely gimped weapons either, although they still need some more attention. Falloff does not equal equivalent distance in optimal, losing 50% of your on paper DPS for Sub BS ships at normal engagement ranges is not cool!
