Default Very telling survey by CCP

I received a newsletter from CCP today, including an invitation to a survey on DUST 514.

It is interesting that CCP is canvassing questions on pc gamers and different pay options as well as the usual questions regarding your preferred console.

I'd have to say, once again, it's easier to release and patch a game on the PC then it is to cope with all the bullshit that comes with consoles, let alone coping with expansions etc. Could see an interesting change regarding Dust being console only in the future.

Have you played games that use Free-To-Play model with micro transactions?

Have you heard of DUST 514?

What age group do you belong to?

I don't think this whole PC only idiocy will last.

WHEN the Dust population crashes 6 months after release CCP will do a shoddy port over to PC and then spend the next few years being :CCP: and playfully neglecting its flaws.

pretty much, but the next step after dust failing will be ccp releasing the vampire game, grabbling some more subs and then dragging on with life support for another 5 years

Not true. Consoles are a single known platform. They're largely walled off, which means no hax and no 'optimising'. You don't have dipshits that badly overclock, then complain about bluescreens. Developers _love_ single platforms with developed SDKs because it means less dicking around trying to fit everything into an API.

Hhm didn't get this one (yet).

Interesting that there isn't a "Do you like the DUST 514 idea?" or similar question in it.

PC-games are pretty much a dying gaming platform bra. Programming games for consoles is way more easy because of a fixed system setup and the issue of gaming piracy on consoles is still pretty much under control.

Also, i am furiously updating my email-folder but no survey for me. Guess i have to fall back trolling CCP via petitions and bugreports then.

Yeah, especially since the programming team was from China and had to get shipped in for the fanfest.

I mean, they couldn't find a team of starving icelanders willing to be code monkeys?

Not true anymore. There is a jtag hack for 360 that let's you run unsigned code and is plaguing MW2:

Consoles != 360 and they brought it on themselves by not clamping down on the modchipping from the getgo like Sony did. They got their shortterm gains from the piracy platform angle and weren't nearly aggressive enough in closing the hardware loophole.

I didn't think the Homebrew needed to be signed in the first place?

Iceland doesn't have that large a pool of talent in programming compared with China, and the cost of living tends to drive up the wages required. Globalization at it's finest.

I heard about these fellas because EVE players have been jonesing for Mining Macro's from them.

We know DUST is going to be :CCP:

Maybe they should really outsource things. :P

    EDIT:

What do we actually know about the Chinese arm of CCP, speaking of the company and the code monkeys it employs, presuming we are thinking of the same chinamen?

Are they Iceland style retarded or do they actually play the game, produce software that isn't full of crippling bugs and isn't building on something no-one understands anymore?

CCP Shanghai has around 70 employees from what I can tell, which makes them a fairly large concern for a programming house; Naughty Dog (Uncharted) has 51-200 employees...it's in roughly the same range looking at the group shots.

    Just out of interest I checked out the latest CCP vacancies;

    1/26/2010 Character Technical Artist 101 Reykjavik-N/-ISL

    1/27/2010 Technical Director 101 Reykjavik-N/-ISL
CCP is looking for a Technical Director to lead the software development efforts of the upcoming Incarna expansion to EVE Online. This person will make strategic technology decisions for the expansion and the game as well as CCP?s shared technology platform. The role will require thinking long term as well as driving the needs of the project forward in the short term. The Incarna Technical Director will work closely with the Technical Director of EVE Online and other technical directors at CCP. Leading the efforts of a local team of programmers as well as directing the efforts of remote programmers in other offices when required, the position will require strong programming and architecture abilities but will not be an individual contributor position.

    1/7/2010 Senior Graphics Programmer Reykjavik-Ic-ISL
The Senior Graphics Programmer will be a part of CCP´s graphics development team. This team is responsible for developing the core graphics technologies that serve as the foundation for CCP´s visually stunning titles. The team consists of a group of graphics programmer working solely on the engine and a group of programmers adding EVE specific features to the engine. The Senior Graphics Programmer must meet the following requirements:

    1/7/2010 Senior/Lead Character Modeler Reykjavik-Ic-ISL
    # A shipped title as a Senior and/or Lead Character Artist on PC or major console platform. Experience on MMO titles is a plus.

Bear in mind that you don't really need a character modeler for non-ambulation Eve...

I can't find a street address for CCP Shanghai, and the use of CCP to mean 'Chinese Communist Party' throws up some interesting stuff in google..."Shanghai Family Persecuted by CCP Supports Party Withdrawals"

"Are they Iceland style retarded or do they actually play the game, produce software that isn't full of crippling bugs and isn't building on something no-one understands anymore?"

They're likely engine coding, which means starting from the ground up. Iceland seems to be magotty with artists and modellers these days unless they have some serious turnover.
