Well, exactly. I'm not a part of it, so I will never claim I fully understand it, because I'm not a German. (But wait, there are Germans corps in -A-, I must be an expert!!!) The link is just to DOTLAN information for 4 Wing, a corporation that until January 10th was a member of Mostly Harmless alliance. I have spoken with a few members of 4 Wing, asking why they left the alliance. They cited a number of concerns, but among them were "leadership" and "organization."
Here's where I stop posting facts and start posting speculation based on those facts. Mostly Harmless is a member of the Northern Coalition for those of you who don't pay attention, and losing a 150-man corp is a significant blow to their fleet-participatory membership. The NC has been under attack from Triumvirate for a while now (I don't remember when the fighting began exactly), and it looks like Tri is doing an excellent job of breaking their enemies' morale. Everything from the massive dominion-related freighter gank on Razor alliance to an apparent Triumvirate siege of around 30 POSes set to come out on Christmas day for the NC has been whittling away at their will to fight. Now that Tri have helped The Initiative. to take the P-2 station system away from Mostly Harmless, I think we may see MH throw in the towel in this fight, weakening the NC.
Feedback is welcome - tell me if I'm a bore or a jerk or just wrong.

My corp is former IRC, but that was before my time. We're essentially an NC pet now. In between (also before my time with them) they were in Immensea. I'm deployed in the P-2 area of Pure Blind at the moment.
This deployment is looking less and less like a proper war, and more like POS housekeeping. Could be that TRI just wants to lay low while the entire NC is on their ass, and they'll pick things back up in Pure Blind when we all return to our respective regions.
This is just one person's opinion, but I don't know how much MH failing would weaken the NC. Probably from a strategic standpoint it would, as the void in Pure Blind would need to be filled in order to maintain a strong power bloc. But as far as a fleet participation and 'ability to keep your home safe' standpoint, I don't think MH contributes as much as some of the other NC alliances. I've only been on mandatory deployment twice since I joined the NC, and both times it's been to help MH shore up their space. When I go on CTA fleets with the NC, theres always way more MM/RZR/ME/RAGE in fleet than MH. Could be a timezone thing though.
If this comes off as anti-MH, it's simply the bias of one person. Keep in mind regardless that the strength of the NC is that if one alliance is having serious troubles, 4 more alliances will come fight with them. I expect after the P-2 debacle we'll do it all over again in Geminate if Atlas is still dicking around over there.
EDIT: Today (next day) we're in K25 in Geminate. Killboards haven't finished loading all the kills, but estimated 200 Atlas dead. Our fleet size only dropped by 50.

ED/IRC just 6 months ago were kicked out of 0.0 by a combined coalition of NC, Goons and RA. Many of those members have moved to CoW, GC and Atlas (who helped conquer the p-2 station in Pure Blind and who have conquered WI's y8r station in Geminate.) This has helped bolster the numbers of the anti NC coalition who's now actually able to match NCs blobs.
It remains to be seen what transpires from the current spike in warfare in EVE due to Dominion but Tri/Init/Atlas/COW&GC/Solar have the capacity of taking out the NC.
IT appears to be almost done with their conquering of Fountain and Goons are busy being sieged by -A-/Stain Wagon. This means NC will mostly stand alone in the fight to defend their space.

So, anyone with 'big picture' opinions they'd like to throw out?

here's my entirely personal, uneducated and uninformed big picture opinion mostly informed by reading kugu, SHC and eveo with very little actually from in-game. this has zero input from my masters (both at alliance and coalition level) because they rightly play their cards close to their chest and I am a grunt.

Garulf, regarding the recent "lull" and the NC taking a few moons back:

I suspect that WTF is considering the next move very carefully, as pushing deeper into MH space will create a vacuum behind them where moons may be taken and infrastructure disrupted (why paint a bullseye on items which are relatively easy to disrupt?). At this point, it seems most of the towers put down by the WTF have been small & medium and lightly defended (except for staging deathstars) and the NC has been relatively proud of taking them back. I strongly suspect that it is lightly defended on purpose, the idea being to grab as much cash wherever it is easy with the least amount of effort. Why build up massive defenses you then have to micromanage & protect while trying to fight deeper in hostile territory? Tri, Init, Atlas...all hold space well away from the front lines and have no worries about that at the moment...why would they purposefully choose to fight two fronts?
I expect WTF to continue to take stations, whatever moons are easy and convenient, and continue to push deeper into hostile territory causing as much damage as possible while exposing themselves to as few losses as possible: both sides are staging out of NPC space at the moment.
What the NC can do about this...I'm not sure, especially if both Atlas & friends and the WTF coalition continue to push their fronts simultaneously (atlas seemingly doing pretty serious damage to WI in the past month). They'll have to pick and choose what they want to defend, and I can't help but think they'll eventually have to fall back and entrench on those regions they actually care to hold (tribute, branch & tenal), instead of having a humongous and expansive (and ultimately pretty shitty) coalition of terrible carebear alliances as long as the pressure is on.

It's true that ATLAS/CoW/GC + Solar (now) have some pretty high participation and have put out some impressive numbers. However, I don't think either of our two fronts have the numbers, alone, to contend with NC NUMBERS. While the NC has been able to out-blob on a single front it remains to be seen that they can effectively defend two fronts and have so far been pushed back a bit. There have been NC successes, yes, but in the grand scheme of things they seem minimal.

NC has seen fit to continue the long standing tradition of LR BS's with a buffer twist, greatly reducing the amount of damage output they can lob down range while increasing their chances of staying alive during bombing runs, which I'll say has been a benefit. As for the ATLAS/CoW/GC perspective, we seem to be able to out maneuver them with smaller, more agile ships. This of course has worked out very well for us as long as we are able to keep a minimum amount of alpha/dps deployed on a battlefield. WTF coalition seems to be able to continue to pull rabbits out of the hat with the use of superior RR tactics and, from the looks of it, a much higher SP pool than can be fielded by the NC - even in the face of being outnumbered by the NC.

I can't stress enough that all of these outcomes could have been different if server performance wasn't such an issue right now but there is really no way to tell because w/o the horrible performance, reaction times of all entities would be increased. The largest effect it seems to have is to give the entity who holds system superiority with more than 400 pilots, or so, the distinct advantage of better grid loading. On an RI'd node, it seems that the magic number before a server crash and unplayable lag seems to be about 8-900 pilots. On a non-RI'd node, that number seems to drop below 600.
