I'm a bit confused. Have we shifted now to equating atheism with 'scientism' or is 'scientism' a new thing and we can stop forcing the atheism label on unwarrented definitions?
I've noticed that there's a pretty big disconnect between the general consensus of kugu and what's actually happening. It seems enough people have said it in this thread that people are taking it as fact.

    Back on track awwwh yeah.

[SPOILER='Oh no my daughter is transgender']
My 21 year old daughter says she's transgender

My daughter is in college and we visited her yesterday. I stumbled on something hanging in her bathroom that literally made me sick to my stomach. I then went into her bedroom where she, my husband, and son were. They could see something was wrong. My son took her dog to the other room and I asked her to explain. She went on to tell us she is transgender.

We are a Christian family, always going to church. As a matter of fact, my husband is the preacher. My daughter has struggled with gender issues ever since I can remember. She never wanted to play with Barbie - always Ken. She fought against wearing the pink dresses I bought her and went for the T-shirts and jeans since preschool. This has been a struggle ever since she was old enough to dress herself. The list goes on and on. She has never been sexually abused- I'm 99% sure of it - we have taken her to counseling many times over the years. She started wresting with lesbianism from the time she was 14. We thought she had a grip on it - she assured us she did. She dated a boy in high school and went to the junior and senior prom with him. (The proms were the only times she wore makeup.)

As I am not surprised as to what I found yesterday, I am devastated. Although signs were always staring me in the face - the way she dressed, no makeup, short hair, etc., I never stopped hoping. She is a girl that once loved the Lord and can quote many Bible scriptures. She knows the Truth. Now, she questions it all and I feel has turned her back on God and all we have taught her. I feel like a total failure as a mom. I tried to be the best mom I knew how to be. I am so depressed - have cried on and off since we found out. I feel like my hopes and dreams of my little girl are gone. What I have hoped and prayed for for 21 years is not this. I feel so alone. I feel like I have no friends I can talk to about this - like I said, my husband is a pastor. People can be very judgmental and if/when this gets out in the church.... I am so alone and so depressed. My husband is there for me, but he does not like me crying all the time.

My husband and I assured her that we love her and will not turn our backs on her; yet that we do not condone what she is doing. I realize this is not going away.

If the spoiler text has an apostrophe (') in it, it won't work. Don't know why, it's just always been like that

I hate it when they bring in new writers for the sequel, especially ones who obviously don't understand the characters. Or when they let Jon Hamm direct.

The New Testament fits the story arc though. The book series follows a rather inept diety as he tries to control his creation and fails spectacularly. Expecting them to know right from wrong before giving them knowledge of right and wrong... needing to wipe them out for a soft reset via the flood... needing to muddy their language because they were a little too smart... It's just failure after failure for him and is culminates in the NT with him deciding to make a grandiose appearance to show off his powers, sacrifice his mortal body to himself, and call it a day. My only problem with the whole epic novel is it's length. There is soooooo much bullshit between the good plot points but I guess that's what you get when you have, what, 40 different authors working on it.

What did they find in her room to make them assume she's a transexual? It's either me being blind and/or retarded or its not in the spoiler? If I dont find out, I may have to actually visit the site to ask...

Missed this earlier. No, they are not equally foolish. Religions make positive claims about our world. Claims that are testable. Science can test these and every time, every time, science has tested the claims they fail. As science has marched on, religion has had to step back on claim after claim. God no longer caused that hurricane or plague or whatever else. Science doesn't have to show that there is no god, it just has to knock down the pillars of religious claims about the god. Logical impossibilities with regards to the Omnis, impossibilities with the creation myths, highlighting unsubstantiated claims, these show that the god being proposed is impossible.

You are correct that it would be foolish for religion to disprove science though, since religion has no method of proving anything.

[SPOILER='The Lord has a wonderful plan for Zachary']
I need help coming to terms with our special needs son.

My two year old son was diagnosed at birth with a rare form of cancer, Intraspinal Neuroblastoma. Zachary had a tumor that crossed through his spine and caused paralysis in his right leg. He endured five rounds of chemotherapy and there were many times we thought we may lose him. Zachary fought quite a battle and at the time we were focused on survival. Zachary still has limited mobility in his right leg and he has damage to his sacral nerve. This damage causes him to not have control over his bowels and his bladder and he cannot feel anything from the waste down. I have relied on the Lord to get us through this and I am at a point now were I am getting a bit frustrated. I don't know how to parent a child that will have a lifelong disability. I pray that the Lord will guide us to make the right decisions and to help show Zachary that he isn't very different from other kids, he just has to work a bit harder. I would like to find other Christian parents that are facing similar issues with their child. Please help.

    Dear My4sons,

I cannot relate in the least and I can only imagine how you must feel! It must be a real swirl of emotions...glad he survived, discouraged with exhaustion, anxious about the future, loneliness due to the uniqueness of your situation....My family is going to pray for you today..to be encouraged by something or someone! I just want to remind you that God has already written little Zachary's story, and His plans are sooo amazing! If, more than anything, Zachary grows to be a boy and a man who loves God and longs to serve Him, He will be used in such powerful ways to influence others!! Remember how it says in the Bible, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made PERFECT in weakness," 2 Cor.12:9-10. Try not to borrow tomorrow's troubles, my friend! The Amazing God we serve has such plans for your little boy...and your family....more than we could think or imagine!! Hang in there, sister!!

    minecraft game- good or bad?

my 11 yr old son loves to play minecraft. so much so that he is even watching youtube videos on it. should i be concerned? he is constantly wanting to watch the youtube videos. not sure what to think. please, if anybody could give any explanation or info, i would most appreciate it.

Re: minecraft game- good or bad?
    Hey daisybel74,

My kids, ages 11, 13, 16,&18, all play this computer game. The objective of the game is to build houses, dig for things, find gold, iron and things. On the hard or average level there are also zombies, skeletons, & spiders that appear and which must be killed. There is no blood or gore. The most fun comes from building structures and digging. On youtube you can find out ways to build things things and get further in the game. The graphics are't that great, but our kids do really enjoy the game. As with all the electronics around our house, they tend to be enjoyed for a lot longer than we would prefer.....the ever present battle for balance! As far as I can tell, it's a fun game, just addictive.

Re: minecraft game- good or bad?
What about the Nether (hell) area? I am completely new to these games and during my review of Minecraft I discovered there is an area called the Nether that is supposed to represent hell. I haven't gone into this area on the game but I'm am worried about introducing such dark places into the hearts of my kids. Does anyone have any feedback on the monsters, creepers...bad guys and bad places of Minecraft? Thank you!

Minecraft is directly linked to severe autism so they should probably take that into account before they call it "fun but addictive". Also, it's possible to craft giant phalluses which can make them gay therefore Minecraft is a gayme

Legos are (usually) far less OCD-inducing than Minecraft.

I mean, I see your point, but still... 90% of people fire up Minecraft and go, "WTF?" and kill the client.

Another 5% get it and enjoy it a little.

Another 5% get devoured by the most pixelated game since River City Ransom.

These are real statistics, the math is sound, and I can poop golden unicorns.

I love it when fundies misrepresent science!

And by love I mean hate, not because I don't like discussing with them why their stances are incorrect, rather because I know that tens of thousands of kids will believe that crap without knowing any better.

I love the fact that, in case you weren't certain the book was written by a redneck, they say "no longer needed to switch flies."

Like, what, the cow's a fisherman? The Green Skipping Warbler's not working, and she needs something better?

Or maybe they mean "switch" like the cow's gonna spank the flies with a branch. Spare the rod, spoil the insect, right?

And while it's fun to laugh at the books, the fact that they're filling innocent children's brains with this shit just angers me. "Teaching" kids that electricity is magical and that it's as much a mystery as why God created AIDS? These kids are fucked, from the very start, and it's through no fault of their own.

    ANGREH.

    http://www.au.org/blogs/wall-of-sepa...-against-bogus

Recently, a flap erupted in Alabama over demands that PBS stations there broadcast DVDs by David Barton, a Religious Right pseudo-historian in Texas. Barton insists, against all evidence, that the United States was founded to be a “Christian nation” and that church-state separation is a “myth.” His work has been solidly debunked, most recently by two professors at Grove City College in Pennsylvania, but that hasn’t slowed him down. Barton distributes propaganda, not history, and the effort to more widely distribute his work is usually led by politicians or activists with an axe to grind. In Alabama, Allan Pizzato and Pauline Howland, two veteran employees of Alabama Public Television, were summarily fired by the Alabama Educational Television Commission. The two said they were given no reason for the dismissals, but Howland told the blog Current.org that earlier this year, Commissioner Rodney Herring, an Opelika chiropractor, began pressuring Pizzato to air a 10-part series by Barton on America’s “Christian” roots.

    Or, you know:

I've been an atheist since age 8 or so. Church and Sunday school was like being forced into special education.

I'm okay with people believing in things bigger than themselves, we all need our vices; but the reality (to me) is that people sublimate their fear of dying and anthropomorphize that fear into a being called God they use to combat the difficult proposition of not existing.

I don't think religion or lack thereof makes you a better or worse person, either. There have been plenty of great people on both sides, plenty of evil people on both sides. For every priest you have fucking a little boy you've got some secular humanist raping a cow.

I guess if you really wanted to drill me I'd have to say I was more of an absurdist, but I personally do not believe in "God", no doubts or second thoughts.

I guess if you really wanted to drill me I'd have to say I was more of an absurdist, but I personally do not believe in "God", no doubts or second thoughts.
"Eternal Reward" is the ultimate snake oil.

And it's interesting that you say that, I tell people I'm an absurdist all the time and they look at me like I'm insane.

It sounds like a plot dreamed up by the creators of Southpark, but it's all true: schoolchildren in Louisiana are to be taught that the Loch Ness monster is real in a bid by religious educators to disprove Darwin's theory of evolution.

One ACE textbook – Biology 1099, Accelerated Christian Education Inc – reads: "Are dinosaurs alive today? Scientists are becoming more convinced of their existence. Have you heard of the 'Loch Ness Monster' in Scotland? 'Nessie' for short has been recorded on sonar from a small submarine, described by eyewitnesses, and photographed by others. Nessie appears to be a plesiosaur."Another claim taught is that a Japanese whaling boat once caught a dinosaur. It's unclear if the movie Godzilla was the inspiration for this lesson.

Jonny Scaramanga, 27, who went through the ACE programme as a child, but now campaigns against Christian fundamentalism, said the Nessie claim was presented as "evidence that evolution couldn't have happened. The reason for that is they're saying if Noah's flood only happened 4000 years ago, which they believe literally happened, then possibly a sea monster survived.

The second comment in that article is oddly enough, accurate. Recently a fairly large group of Americans were surveyed about the Bible. The group with the most correct answers? Atheists.

There are very few strings of words that cause as much fear for me as "Bob Jones University."

Under Gov. Bobby Jindal's voucher program, considered the most sweeping in the country, Louisiana is poised to spend tens of millions of dollars to help poor and middle-class students from the state's notoriously terrible public schools receive a private education. While the governor's plan sounds great in the glittery parlance of the state's PR machine, the program is rife with accountability problems that actually haven't been solved by the new standards the Louisiana Department of Education adopted two weeks ago.For one, of the 119 (mostly Christian) participating schools, Zack Kopplin, a gutsy college sophomore who's taken to Change.org to stonewall the program, has identified at least 19that teach or champion creationist nonscience and will rake in nearly $4 million in public funding from the initial round of voucher designations.

Yeah, Lousiana's loaded, they should totally dump millions into teaching kids crap like this:
