There is also an in game mailing list and channel for Agony classes, which might be handy, see the agony wiki for details. The courses, especially the PVP Basic, are very popular though[1].

Completely irrelevant to that point, how I ended up in NPC 0.0 is fairly simple and dull, I'm a '10 character, so still new enough not to be completely bitter, and when I started playing i got pointed at E-UNI, like everyone and their dog, it seems.

That got me a good grounding in how stuff works in eve, and enough people around all the time to try lots of things out, and not fail too hard at any of them, so I tried mining, found it sucked without company and chemical assistance, WH stuff, missioning, a bit of manufacturing, etc etc. and basically found the thing I liked best of all was tooling around trying to cause something to die in a fire, either myself or, preferably, someone else.

It is actually a really good place to go to find your feet in eve, and there seem to be lots of corps that like ex-unistas, including a couple of MM corps, at least one IT corp, various pirate corps, and hordes of WH corps. I suspect the uni grads are like cockroaches though, if you turn over a stone in any major corp you'll find at least a few, even PL.

So I was basically bimbling around in empire, in a bit of a rut, couple of days a fortnight doing highsec L4s, to pay for the ships I'd be getting blown up soloing in Amamake, OMS etc the rest of the time. Somehow ending up teaching the E-UNI basic fitting class cause no-one else was doing it[2], and flying in fleets with the corp when some "merc" corp decided that deccing the biggest high sec corp in the game (I think) is a great way to pad their killboard[3]. At the same time I was getting slowly bored with empire, and looking at moving to null, partly due to this benighted hole of a forum.

Luckily Agony started recruiting again recently, and even more amazingly, they let me in[4], so I have been having a great time out in Curse, shooting people and dieing in fires, though hopefully my 2 ranis a day habit is tailing off a little.

They are a great bunch of guys to fly with, and I have learned more in the past couple of weeks than I have in the previous few months.

Woo, look at all these footnotes!

[1] You literally have to almost camp the Agony forums when the sign up thread goes live, at times.
[2] You can talk for 3 hours solid going over basic basic fitting stuff, who knew?
[3] It isn't, the uni flies like TEST and the goons, bar the local spam
[4] Agony itself isn't a training corp, they just run courses for other people.

Those look like excellent classes; they're all closed now, but I'll add my name to the mailing list when I have time. The only problem is, as you mentioned, timeframe.

That pilot that posted (aside from that pilot getting to L4 missions, which I haven't) has an experience that at least at the start seems similar to mine.

I joined eve through a friend (he didn't help at all after that... he left the game shortly after i started) and had no previous experience in any MMO. It was difficult but a friend (same guy who got me into the game) got me into an Alliance that was trying to get some space. They had standing with provi so they go into STEEL space for ratting and that corp had office in Choonka. When that alliance fell apart i left the corp i was with and joined FW with my own corp.

The idea was to make cheap stuff for Gallente FW people and have fun with it. Joined few fleets but lag was pretty bad in FW and died without even seeing anything. I had no indy skills but i made some profits but within few days i ran into 0.01 isk wars in every faction warfare system. I started to loose isk since my frig bpo are like ME 0 and i had crappy indy skills. I decieded to leave FW and try 0.0.

At this point i had 3 mill isk and a T1 fitted drake (no rigs), i thought about leaving the game then read some forum posts about providence being the best place for pvp and making isk. I moved my ship (only drake) to Choonka (remembered that name from old corp office), held my breath and jumped into KBP. No one killed but i saw some people camping the gate with bubbles. Since i knew about NRDS i decloaked and moved out of the bubble so i can proceed to get the target system. I choose STEEL space because of their system had 32 belts and a station. At this time i had no access to Citadel or blue with anyone in the area so on my own i started to create my blue lists (i marked most of the holders as blue). Lucky for me, that system had few ppl and they were from STEEL so whenever i see a neutral enter system i would ask in local if he is a "good guy" or "bad guy". I created pretty nice blue lists within few days then a STEEL guy showed me that i can add rigs and even T2 mods to my drake so i don't have to warp out frequently. After two weeks of ratting i got bored and started to look for a corp around provi area with standing and access to citadel. I found an awesome corp and nice alliance. They were living in Misaba and had full access to CVA jbs and intel channels. The alliance ran weekly roam (5-10ppl) either in Fast ships or T1 cruisers to look for reds in provi or kick in in Hed-GP or even further into catch. Those were some fun times with -a- fleets chasing us back to DG or running out via HED-GP high sec jump. Lot of the provi had pocket intel channels that helped to save quite a few carriers from red blobs. These pocket intels are pretty nice because as soon as reds enter the pocket we would form a fleet to camp them in or catch them with drag bubbles.

After provi fell i was just drifting between alliances, joined RAGE and found how shitty they are. They had no reimbursement programs and had 2 system upgraded and but would give multiple systems (good systems too) to their pets so that they can rat and make isk. It was shitty alliance and the corp was bad too. They have good reputation but i got the idea that they took the game too seriously. Joined TEST and its been awesome. It doesn't come near the fun i had in provi but i do enjoy flying with test. TEST is fun as long as you avoid bacon bar, trolls and idiots. There are some immature morons in the alliance but overall its good.

Footnotes provide a formatting headache for me, since I have to convert shit from Google Docs to various other formats. Otherwise, I might use them more.

Im going to go out there and commit the cardinal sin of mentioning Red v Blue. Its not for everyone, and you certainly have plenty of better offers/suggestions here, but its where I started out, so thought i would throw it out for completeness.

Its far from an expert pvp training academy, but it will happily take you from clueless victim into someone who can at least understand the concepts of fitting, and what to do when the guns start firing. I entered there as a useless carebear whose choice of combat ship was an unrigged Merlin , and after two months of fairly casual learning left there with the 'combat shakes' gone, a decent understanding of aggro mechanics (having Lukka sat off your station undock for a solid three weeks teaches how to avoid instant-death), an overview that didnt utterly suck, the knowledge of how to survive a run through lowsec, a semi-acceptable killboard (cheers to the 3rd party WT who welped his 2bil T3 on our frig gang), and all for the price of a dozen frigs and a couple of destroyers and cruisers.

Sure, the rules and limitations will render some of your early experiences there a bit artificial, but that makes it easier to pick up the vitals without feeling completely overwhelmed - and once the 3rd party deccers roll around, you get the full experience.

I eventually left Red courtesy of a careless neutral remote-repairer and an itchy trigger finger; at the time they were based in Gallente 0.9, and I didnt realise exactly how much sec status a neutral podding will cost you. But it was the kick i needed to get out. I had learned to despise high-sec docking games, so 0.0 seemed the obvious next stop, by then I knew enough to be able to handle myself and not be a complete liability to those I was flying with.

You mean hisec limitations, or do red and blu have any special kinds of rules?

My experience is that everyone sucks. I've been in a lot of things and extremely rarely had help of any kind, everything I know learned from tagging along and watching. Even when I FC'd no other FC fuckers gave me tips. They always talk a great game and then when it comes to it they're busy or offline or whatever. There's only one corp I was in, in '07, that was genuinely a bunch of chill guys always ready to yack it up, and to a man they're long gone from eve, except for me. My advice is to join whoever, and if you find they don't talk, help, only gang with the same group of old members, aren't in your timezone, etcetera, leave and go to another place. Fact is as I realised years ago, PVP gets boring once the shine wears off whether you win or lose. What you're there for in your outside-hi-sec group and what keeps you playing is the people, if they're good people, and the adversity you face together. Who, frankly, gives a fucking shit about how awesome X group is at pvp when they're a bunch of dickheads. So you go out and kill dudes and then what, kill some more dudes rather than expose what a mute bunch of grognards, egotists or snowblowers you are? Just go and find some people you like playing with and don't tolerate anything else. And never have more than either easily sellable anywhere, or else just 2, ships ready because that shit will slow you down moving around when all their promises of logistics falls through like everything else.

The main ones are no podding (which although keeps the 'fun' atmosphere, means that guys get lazy about warping their pods out, and lose them in droves to third parties), no spies in the other corp (though this is pointless as the opposing fleet commanders are supposed to communicate fleet setups for better fights), no neutral reppers, always honour 1v1's, and no ECM exept for defending your home station undock. Of course, all these rules go out the window when fighting third-party wardeccers, and your allowed to fight as dirty as you like, cos the enemy certainly will.

To get this thread back on track:

I started playing EvE online late in 2007 during my freshman year in college. When I first started I had no idea what I wanted to do with myself and had no friends in game.

I started with simple mission running in the domain region while i trained up my learning skills and other basics. Throughout that time I paid close attention to the recruitment chat channel to try to spot a group that I would fit in with. Being late US TZ my options were limited. After my learning skills were finished and I was capable of flying a t2 fit arbitrator I applied to an Aussie corp called Cosmic Cimmerians. They turned out to be an awesome group and I got my first taste of pvp with them in low sec. We ran a few wardecs and did some low sec roams and by early 2008 I had a decent pvp record for a newb. However, by this time I have having trouble keeping up with their Aussie TZ and decided to leave in an attempt to find a US TZ strong corp. I stepped away from the game for a few months and when I came back I had a clear picture of what I wanted.

I ended up joining a mercenary corp called Vengeance Imperium, which ironically was not US TZ either, but was active enough in my TZ to make it count. I rolled with them for about a year and a half and during this time was able to train up my BS skills and gain a vast amount of experience in pvp (mostly high sec wardecs). Over time, however, I began to yearn for more. Our corp joined United Freeman Alliance, then a KIA guest in geminate, with the stated goal of helping UFA resist outside pressure. Upon entering the alliance we realized very quickly that it was utter shit and so was the leadership. We decided to leave about a month before WIDOT rolled over UFA. However, by this time, having experienced true nullsec combat, I wasn't too happy about returning to high sec tasks and decided to leave VI. I ended up following a VI friend over to Navy of Xoc, a longtime member of Wildly Inappropriate.

    ______________

tldr - you don't have to think too hard about your future. Just roll where EvE takes you (don't stress out) and you'll end up where the fun is. That would by definition be elsewhere from high sec.

HOW TO GET OUT OF HIGHSEC

    1) Join an open recruiting corp - doesn't matter which and the dumber the better
    2) Rob them of everything down to the kitchen sink
    3) Use stolen assets as bribes to be sponsored into a high grade 0.0 alliance
    4) Get assets stolen from you via recruitment scam
    5) Repeat

Seriously you want TEST, they're chill, they're newbie friendly have access to wiki.goonfleet.com which is hands-down the best Eve learning resource out there, and you never have to worry about logistics 'cuz you can just fly to VFK and buy everything from me

I'm curious, how does the goonfleet wiki compare to wiki.eveuniversity.org. Obviously I don't have access to the goon wiki

I imagine it is more 0.0 focused than the uniwiki for a start, and has lots more fits and stuff

their blanket coverage of this thread should indicate theyre the macdonalds of alliances and put any independent thinker clean off and the consistent pushing from goons should indicate theyre nothing but a pet (or "fond ally" or "we were like that once" or however they wish to frame it) they look to keep stocked, after all, why not join goons.

I hadn't heard of that one so I took a look. There's no page for "Rifter" and "Flying Minmatar" is full of hilariously wrong shit. I mean sure maybe some of it is for empire bears but Jesus there's some bad info in there.

Just a quick example I caught at a glance:

As far as Empire stuff goes, I took a look at Mining - most of the useful info on Eve Uni is just links to external calculators for ore prices. The Goon page has screens and screens of math detailing how to determine peak efficiency, isk per hour, what to train Mining Drones to for a given hull, etc. There's also stuff on the wiki about what mods to scavenge off of wrecks to get minerals faster than mining (admittedly a little 0.0 biased.)

On the other hand the E-Uni stuff on tweaking Mac/Linux clients seems more filled out or at least more up to date than wiki.goonfleet.

    Honesty is the best policy.
Because any goon he talks to will just scam him, it's in our nature
But dishonesty is therefore the second best policy. And second best is nothing to sneeze at.

Anyway, isn't the goonwiki mirrored somewhere for the public to peruse at their leisure?

The last time I heard tell of someone trying to manually rip the wiki they had Solo raining unholy hell on them for bandwidth consumption, he's got it locked down pretty well but there's assuredly older copies bebopping around somewhere

Yeah this is how I made a bil in my first month in EVE. Game is much more fun and :profit: when you RP a sociopath. Read up on the game enough to sound knowledgeable, talked my way into a biggish hisec corp, took over a few functions, got wallet/hanger and took everything that wasn't nailed down. Used that to recruit my own herd of missionbears and milked them with taxes. Pump and dumps with alt herds on the eveo stock forum are another way to make money off of :words: without :effort: if you know your business speak well. Oh, and you can easily short stuff by offering security for a loan and walking when the collateral drops below value of the money. Or you could start a bank. Seriously I have no idea what those people are thinking, they must be thicker than a brick wall. Letting other people touch your money is an excellent way to have less money.

From there, RVB is no-fuss pvp, and you can easily buy a decently skilled character to skip all the years of waiting to train stuff. Seconding the NPC 0.0 alliances as fun places to roam and dick around. Actual space empire 0.0 seemed like too much :effort: to be worth it, but I did have some fun out there too. Caps are about as fun as sticking your dick in a meat grinder, not sure why people bother. Leading fleets is a pain in the nuts, but if you're into having people suck you off every time you log in and then pitching a shit fit every time you welp a fleet or log off it's a worthwhile way to go.

tl;dr if you're actually doing pve for income you're doing it wrong.

edit: Oh, and I don't recommend robbing people who know their shit, or whom you've talked to on ts. Backstabbing carebears is one thing, robbing actual players seems like a good way to never have fun in 0.0 again.

I endorse the message that corp theft is a viable, productive and fun means of income for new players

My eve career started in highsec. I joined the first corp that recruited me, and ran missions for about 2 months. I got a little bit of pvp experience fighting against griefers who would wardec us every couple of weeks. The corp leadership had contacts in a crappy NC alliance (DEFY), and took the more active players with them when they left to go back to nullsec. DEFY was shit, and soon collapsed, but some buddies and I landed on our feet in another NC alliance, which then lost their space as well when Razor gave them the boot. This new corp was awesome, and I have been following them ever since, absorbing their wisdom and growing as a player.

So to cut a long story short, get contacts in nullsec, and bounce around until you find a good home. It may be tough, and take you from north to south and everywhere in between, but when you finally find a good home it will be worth it.

I've mostly been lurking in the thread reading people's stories and enjoying the conversation. But no, I'm not in TEST yet; I'm waiting for my Reddit account to get a bit over three months old, and posting in it from time to time (I got a metric fuckton of comment karma somehow O_O).

I'm almost disappointed you're joining TEST - I preferred when you were an enigmatic figure with no political affiliations.

Yeah, there's something to be said for that. My updates are going to take a big credibility hit, assuming they even let me in. In all probability, if I'm let into TEST, the updates will die a slow death from people in IT, southern entities, eastern entities, and pretty much anyone not in the NC no longer trusting me, even given how little trust I have from them now.

On the other hand, playing this game alone fucking sucks balls, and this video haunts my daydreams with how awesome it is.

You could petition Chribba to let you into his neutral 1 man alliance and sit in his personal station in 9uy? At least you have a crazy Swede to talk to then.

    Better than NPC corp chat

Not to mention how the instant 20 point IQ drop would affect the readablity of your reports too.

I'd still have an IQ higher than 98% of humanity, so I think I'd be good :-P

NPC corp chats are actually one of the better parts of this game. The Scope for one is nice.

These pocket intels are pretty nice because as soon as reds enter the pocket we would form a fleet to camp them in or catch them with drag bubbles.

Posted on SA since 1999 or so, started a trail account, sat in an Empire station for 24 hours till my Goonfleet app got ok'd then podded out to Goonspace and never went back to Empire apart from a Jita alt. Kind Goons gave newbee ships/isk, made my first billion isk in about 2 weeks scamming/salvaging rat wrecks from Goon ratters. Flew round in Rifters in fleet fights, learned to PvP/fit ships that aren't dumb and not be a retard. Achieved Mega Jew status with a little help from fellow Goons within a couple of months and bought a few decent characters and pimped out ships (I was flying a Aeon on one character and losing faction fit Tengu's on another for fun within about 8 months of starting playing). Got bored, quit.

    Resubbed.

^^ How to play EVE right. Except for resubbing, never resub.
