Default EVE devblog: The GM Blog: Sharing is caring, unless it's account sharing

Dear players. I am GM Nova and I am a senior Game Master here at Customer Support. I am writing this blog because I feel that there is far too little dialogue between players and Customer Support. What I am going to do, in what I hope to be a series of blogs, is to go through some of our policies, the reasons behind these policies and how it affects players and the game when they are not followed.

Many players seem to suffer from something called “EULARD” or End User License Agreement Reading Deficiency (Also known as U-Lard). Players afflicted with this deficiency are unaware of the many rules and policies they agree to when they accept the EULA, perhaps understandably so, since it’s a lengthy and sometimes confusing document. I am not going to go through the entire EULA in this blog, but I am going to discuss an important section that generates considerable grief on the player base as well as load on Customer Support, Account Sharing.

Here is the relevant clause from the End User License Agreement regarding account sharing: http://www.eve-online.com/pnp/eula.asp

2. YOUR ACCOUNT
A. Establishing a New Account
You may not share your Account with anyone, or allow anyone other than you personally (or your minor child, if you have registered an Account on behalf of your minor child) to access or use your Account. Joint or shared ownership or use of an Account by more than one user is prohibited.

B. Passwords and Names
You will be asked to select a password during the registration process ("Password"). You may not disclose your Password to anyone or allow anyone to use your Password to access the System or play EVE™. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your Password and for any damage, harm, lost or deleted characters, etc. resulting from your disclosure, or allowing the disclosure, of any Password, or from use by any person of your Password. You may not obtain, attempt to obtain, use or attempt to use the password of anyone else. You are responsible for remembering your Account information and Password.

As you can see, account sharing is clearly not allowed. This includes giving a friend your password to train a skill for you, even if it’s for only one time. The reason for this is account sharing creates risk of abuse. I am sure that a great number of players have at one time shared their account details with someone without running into any problems. Not yet at least. You would probably not believe how much of our time is spent on cases where players have shared their account details in good faith only to have them stripped of ISK, items and even characters. We can not guarantee that we can reverse damage done to accounts that have been shared. I can however guarantee that players that log into other player's account and steal their assets are rewarded with a long vacation from EVE.

I will list the most common issues we receive regarding account sharing.

    • Players ask an ingame friend to train skills for them. Friend keeps the login details. Friendship ends, the account is accessed and damaged.
    • Player decides to sell a character for ISK. He then feels that the character transfer fee is too high and gives the buyer his login details and thereby the account. The buyer happily plays the account for a few months until the original owner claims that the account was hacked. In these cases the account typically gets banned permanently.
    • Players share their accounts with corp members in order to allow them access to a capital ship. A player leaves the corp and decides to rob everyone on his way out with the account of a corp member. Much destruction and wailing ensues.
I would not be writing this if I didn’t feel that this is a serious problem that is draining our resources. A petition that follows a hacking case or a shared account abuse takes about ten times longer then a regular petition does to fully resolve. We get several of these in our queues every single day which greatly reduces our response time and decreases the quality of support we are able to give to others that need our help.

What I am trying to explain is that responsibility must go both ways. It is our responsibility to give you the best service we possibly can. It is your responsibility to allow us to give you this support by following our rules and policies.

Best regards,
GM Nova
Senior Game Master
EVE Online Customer Support

What sux is the sheer number of accounts across ALL alliances that are fixing to be banned. If BoB has directors everywhere they will have access to the names of other alliances cynonet characters.

Every single BoB director would need to be banned, but so would remedial and I'm assuming the majority of the HCs in game. Hell my main would have to be banned, my girlfriend switched a couple skills for me.

Someone was saying in the TeamMinmatar channel (in-game chan for scrapheap challenge) that only 1 person actually logged into the cynonet accounts but all the corps helped to fund them through GTC.

No idea if it's true mind you.

Also, Dian has been known to log into Galavets account when they are low on Carriers.

Lallante and Ghost are also known to log on Chowdown's Titan.

    confirm.

Its a blog to make it look like they care about the accusations made at BoB re: Cynonets, when in reality they probably wouldnt investigate until 2000 people petitioned it.

If they went and banned all the BoB members involved in the cynonet, people would start complaining about favouritism in the opposite direction, as all sovereign 0.0 alliances use cynonets. CCP knows the kind of crapstorm that would be created and also knows the extra money it is most likely making from these paying accounts, so they pacify the currently raging public with such a post then wait another 2 years until someone else brings it up.

All in all I never agreed with Kugutsumen's expose on BoB cynonets as they are necessary to any large capital fleet, and until CCP give us a better option we have to share accounts. But I also understand that he was simply trying to show the depth at which BoB (and therefore some devs/GMs) break the rules, but I am of the opinion that alot of the EULA needs to be re-written to suit the current game mechanics, escalating in-game political situations and fleet tactics.

I'm not against account sharing. I tried to be clear on this issue.

Usually after every major patches, Sniggerdly camps Amamake for a whole weekend... we kill and pod at least a thousand guys before calling it a day. We recently celebrated our 10,000th pod kill and the lucky winner got a 300M prize.

Sniggerdly tend to piss off a lot of people in the process and probably GMs too. Somehow Snigg competes with BoD for being the most hated entity in EVE.

What does it have to with account sharing?!?

BoD gets away with widespread account sharing; even GMs in BoB used to share their accounts.

On the other hand, Snigg members are constantly monitored for EULA violations! We've had members getting banned without warning for switching a skill for another member or for going to a member's house for the weekend and connecting to EVE.

No point in banning for account sharing people dont want to loose time on skill training so they ask someone to swap a skill no big deal.

they never mentioned actually craking down or banning anyone about this in the blog, unless i misread. they just said "dont do it its bad", and that the account is banned if there's a complaint.

there is a definite need for legitimizing account sharing, just institute a "sucks if you get hacked" policy, or add some option to add someone else's account to some "allowed accounts" list to protect those who access the account from being banned due to a complaint, and keep the rest of the system as-is. wrong, metagaming, unfair or not, it needs to be done.

Fair enough.. I can see why would want to expose others doing it if CCP are singling you/your corp out for it.

I agree with snigg being hated though... The first times I ever entered 0.0 didnt go to well, thanks to you guys.. and if anyone ever mentioned the snigg to me I would go "fuck those guys" :P

Hey I might even have a few lossmails with your name on them

edit: Oh I will add... after fighting snigg in SP leading up to this war, and snigg joining the fight with us.. I have grown to have a lot of respect for snigg.. just thought I'd clear that up

when i first joined sniggwaffe i was looting my dead caracal's can and someone came up to me and was like "you know you joined one of the more hated corps in eve right?" i was like "good i got the right one then"

also where was that quote from our forums saying that an ISD guy told someone they "preferred to recruit from corps that were in good standings with the community"? i guess i can understand why they do that but then again it bothered me a bit because isd are supposed to be 'annonymous' with their mains so it shouldnt matter.

its okay though, what we do makes up for the fact that we wont ever get a t2 bpo

You have to admit, it is about time for another Amamake camp. The local population has grown fat, and lazy, and is ripe for the picking.

And it's sorta on the way to BoB space...

    Hmm...
