It's not that simple:
As far as we know Christmas has only been celebated from the 3rd century and became prominent some time in the 4th century.
The defining holiday of Christianity is of course Easter which has was probably celebrated from the beginnings of the Christian faith, Christmas is a relatively recent addition.
During the 3rd - 5th century there were wide-ranging debates about the nature of Jesus and the nature of the Trinity.
Was Jesus the Lord's son or just an exemplary human? Was Jesus the Lord's son from birth (from before creation?) or was he only adopted when baptized in the Jordan ("This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased")? Did the Holy Trinity exist before Nativity and Pentecost? ...
The Council of Nicaea tried to settle these questions once and for all and purged those who didn't agree with their solution (Meletians, Arians, Nestorians in the 5th century, ...).
As such Christmas was conceived and always existed as a counter-weight to the celebration of Epiphany ("an appearance or manifestation especially of a divine being") on January 6th. Epiphany was originally understood as commermorating the epiphany during the baptism of Jesus. This placed the holiday in dangerous proximity to heretical "adoption" claims and the Western and Eastern churches chose different ways to use Christmas (the Nativity story as told by Luke confirms in no uncertain terms that Jesus was divine from birth) in order to de-emphasize the baptism event.
The Western Churches decided to celebrate Christmas on the 25th but changed the interpretation of Epiphany - it does no longer refer to the baptism epiphany but instead to the epiphany to the three Magi who recognize the divine nature of Jesus at the cradle (just don't ask about the shepherds... ^^).
As such Epiphany is disarmed and placed in a direct connection to Christmas.
The Eastern Churches did stick to the original interpretation of Epiphany but decided to celebrate Christmas on the same day - January 6th.
Imho a much more elegant solution that enabled Christmas to overshadow the baptism without having to reinterpret Epiphany or run into logical issues (why again does the epiphany to the shepherds on the night of Jesus birth not count?).
Eventually the baptism vs christmas issue lost its ideological edge, Christmas was firmly established as an important holiday and most Eastern churches joined the Western tradition of celebrating Christmas on December 25th (December 25th was convenient as it allowed Christians to appropriate older, pagan celebrations on that date reinterpreting their light symbolism).
However, the Armenians still celebrate Christmas along with Epiphany on January 6th.
The conincidence between the Eastern Churches originally celebrating Christmas on January 6th and December 25th in the (old) Julian calendar falling on January 7th in the Gregorian (and revised Julian) calendar is a source of frequent confusion.

Several of the corps and FCs that used to actually PVP have left IRC over the past year or two. It doesn't help they found out Verge had an entire pvp alt corp in IRC.IRC has been invaded multiple times. The seriousness of these invasions can be debated, but every time IRC threw the kitchen sink at them and eventually they went away. That appears to be what has surprised most people about this invasion, they arent putting up the typical IRC defense. I don't know what has changed about the alliance in the couple years its been since i've been it it. I know Axxeut left, and despite his many flaws as an alliance leader, he did have a unique ability to whip the masses up into a fighting frenzy. Perhaps there is a lack of leadership to get behind. Or perhaps IRC has finally bled all its good PVPers into Black Legion, and corps to other alliances, and is left as a husk of an alliance filled only with ratters and carebears not willing to defend their home.
I was surprised when they surrendered to PL in the Solar/eath war after PL started SBUing Cobalt, I didn't think that they would roll over so easy then. Its kind of sad that they haven't fixed their internal problems in that time and might finally lose their space.
How likely is something like this to happen? I ask my alliance mates about this and they pretty much label me a fucking retard for suggesting that something like IRC being forced out of Cobalt Edge could ever happen in a million and a half years.

I think it really depends on how much structure RZR wants to do. If IRC evacs all their shit or gets pushed out the space might get filled in with a bunch of new/young alliances. Like what happened in Catch. Somebody has to occupy that space and I highly doubt RZR wants to, but I bet there are some that do.

Is there any real point in IRC forming up for major timers? Im sure what ever they managed to field would just be a magnet for the thousands of target hungry members of the CFC/HBC blue blob fest that must be finding it hard to get a decent fight anywhere else these days days.

The problem is most of the CFC wants to catch a few fish every now and then, but RZR is trying to drain the lake. How many supers have any of your smaller alliance tackled and assisted in killing in the last 6 months, because Unclaimed is on a roll and has on their own tackled most of the supers that died in the south. Im struggling to remember SCdot doing anything but accusing PL of DDOSing their comms during a fight or claiming that they're tracking all of PL's IPs so that they know when we move in eve (no bullshit some guy actually claims this in that alliance).
