-A- doesn't really have to work a propaganda machine, the CFC war on highsec carebears does that job for them.

I think the answer is that -A- gets better buy-in because, unlike HBC and CFC, it is more psychologically important to its members they do so. Nobody really wants to be a cockroach, they want to be known as the PVP LORDS OF NEW EDEN COME AT US BRO. People in -A- would seriously question why they are spending money to play this game if they confronted the reality of their alliance; they would be forced to confront, in turn, questions of whether they themselves are fools.
Nobody wants to think that. It's easier psychologically to reject the reality of getting shot to shit and losing three regions without meaningful resistance as somehow an aberration, than it is to realize they've spent 14.95 a month to prove they're worthless scrubs following fools.

Update: A handful of Viking warriors in their Dreads died valiantly in Querious. Maka declared a public holiday.
Many carriers came to rescue Vikings but were unable to reach the Dreads given some half way decent dictor work. On the other hand, AAA missed an Avatar and other yummy stuff that got away.
