tl;dr: Dont play public games

Im pretty mad at Blizzard. First of all, they dont include an offline singleplayer. Not a dealbreaker, but I can fully understand people who get pissed about that.

So, I wake up today to check the AH and I notice that my stash is empty, so is the last character I played with. All other characters are unharmed. Apparently, people in public games can read out the session ID of the game, then 'clone' it or some shit and empty you out. Your account doesnt get hacked per se, (no one enters your password), but still they manage to access your character and your stash. So in short, you are forced to play singleplayer although there is no real singleplayer. You have to be online but cant play public games because someone could steal your shit. And above all, dont accept random party-invites from random people you dont know. (I should say that this IT stuff is mad wizardry for me, hence the amateur description of what goes on, but I think I grasped the concept.)

Oh and Blizzard offers me to rollback my account which costs me 2 days of playtime. For a fault thats clearly on their part. Wow I'm mad.

The reason they are keeping everything server side, including single player games, is because with Diablo 2 they let us have it on our side and people abused the ever living shit out of it. By giving us local play it gives the hackers files/data to work with. The local saves/files/data and how to manipulate them is how they break the game and write shit like injection trainers. By denying them as much local data as possible it gives them less to work with.

I'm not sure why Blizzard would pretend it's not happening though, especially when they don't want gear/gold being rolled back. They want us trading it so they can make a cut when the real money store goes into full swing. It's not like they see anymore of our money from us having to grind back our gear since Diablo doesn't have a sub. v0v

After reading your post I rushed to log in, my assets are safe for now but I'm never pugging again. Shame because I was actually having fun doing it.

Well, apparently its relatively save if you login a lvl1 char and visit the auction house at the end of every session. At least thats what I'll be doing now. It doesnt save your stash but at least your gear is save.

I spoke to my high level gamer nerd advisor who knowse everything about computers/vidya (he's legit, even korean). What he said is pretty in line with Fartman's post. He said it's a repeat of what happened with ToR where people were making up all kinds of reasons for getting hacked when really it was, for the most part, people getting keylogged or forum fetched.

These made up stories make it more difficult for people to figure out what's actually happening or how they got keylogged/etc and go seeking help on the forums.

The good news is there are no confirmed reports of accounts using the authenticator device/app being compromised. To get it you can either pay like $5 for an independent device or just download the free app to your iphone/ipod touch/android/blackberry/etc. Being the baller nerd I have had one of these bad boys on my key chain since when I tried out Cataclysm.

Whenever I look the session hijacking seems to be speculation that chinese whispered into being the confirmed reason.

The reason for this is not very clear, but some speculation on Reddit suggests that the battle.net sessions are being hijacked, giving the hacker full control of the accounts.

You don't know you have compromised your system with a keylogger, that's how it works. On the flip side, people who know they did something naughty but still want their shit back will lie on forums/to the customer service hoping they will get appeased by playing the role of "paragon gamer who has done nothing wrong and just wants his stuff back." This is where speculation and confirmation bias leads to the birth of rumors.

Keyloggers are so 1990s anyway. Community site exploits are normally how accounts get hijacked. This guy right here talks a lot about gold farming, rmt, and hijacking accounts. I suggest watching the whole thing because it's a good interview, but if not start watching at the 32:43 mark.

IMO when "rumors is all you have to go on" I'll go with Blizzard's word at face value over the word of some faceless dude from the internet who will never be held accountable for any of his claims. Think about how many WoW guys get their accounts jacked, and then realize your WoW account is the same your D3 one.

Never forget the average faceless person on the internet is as far from trustworthy/reliable as you can get.

I just got some gear and am having less trouble now. Getting raped in Inferno though. It's amazing the big difference a few pieces of gear make.

Actually, its easier solo. From what Ive heard, groups of 4 players only make it futher than act 2 by leeroying one at a time and having one of his buddies port to his corpse and then leeroy himself and so on.

I was in that situation a few years ago when my WoW account was hacked; the weird part was that it was another email account they had got into, not the one registered to the one that was hacked, of course the hacked email also had an account on it that got hijacked.

To get back on topic, how worthwhile would it be to buy this game? Prices seem to have gone up since release and ironically now it seems that blizzard's own download version is the cheapest compared to UK vendors. I played D2 a while back and the grindy, repetitive aspect got a bit boring after a few weeks or maybe a month of play; so if the gameplay isn't quite different or they haven't put a lot of new stuff in to keep you interested I'm not sure it would be worthwhile buying it.

They simplified the game. Also, its pointless to play more than one of each playable character to 60 since you can respec without problems. On top of that, they kind of took the diversity out of the game, although Im not sure about how the game will develop in the future. The only reason I still play it (after getting a monk and a WD to 60) is beacuse I want to get good pvp items. If the PvP sucks, I'll probably stop playing.

There are talks already about Blizzard nerfing Inferno because Melees in general get raped after Act 1, even with superpimp gear. The only ones able to clear it were kiters or imba setups like the permacloak demon hunter, but with that nerfed now everyone is struggling. I mean, it's supposed to be a challenge and not something people casually can blitz by since the lvl 60 magic find buff + inferno drops some amazing loot.

If you do a lvl 60 MF buff through Act 1 hell you can farm shittons of gold, I've been picking up 1k stack gold w/o gold find on my gear. So I am not sure the real money auction house is being forced anymore than plexing for isk.

And the reason they have a real money auction house is because it fights 3rd party gold selling and makes Blizzard a cut. Shit's a business, bro, and when nerds are taking advantage of their game to make themselves money they're going to adapt to it, one way or the other. In this case instead of having Ebay make the commision of the gold/item selling, Blizzard takes the cut. It's really no difference, bro.

The recent nerfs handed down by Blizzard have been thoroughly amusing, atleast on my part in relation to Wizards.

The notorious first Diablo Inferno kill was completed by the build that was a low vit/high crit(or high hp regen, I can't remember which) Diamond Skin & Force Armour Venom Hydra build. This essentially allowed for quick regen of total hp, and hits that should technically do in upwards of 60k+ reduced to 3000 damage, and then this would be splashed against Diamond Skin (correctly runed, could absorb 20k). This essentially made the Wizard unkillable vs high damage, slow attack mobs (Hello Diablo), unless he was a fucking fruitcake. The build however, was really shit and could only be used in very few situations, so as to why people flocked to it, is beyond me.

The forums were full of tears and rage over what was claimed to be an exploit, overpowered, or just downright cheese. Justifications for the legit build were strong to begin with, but as more and more people came to learn of this, the full invasion of Forums by the tear brigade was underway, and not a moment was wasted. Especially after the nerf came down, the response by Wizards was great. Just enough time for many wizards to copy the build, changing to a low vit force armour build, to be slapped in the face by Blizzard.

tl;dr in typical Blizzard style, the nerf bat caused immense tears, which they are efficient at generating. I loved it.

I'm enjoying my 40k DPS Wizard build, but I am forced to kite champion packs, and just downright reload the level or skip a champion pack with a high base run speed, WITH the Fast/Teleport/Vortex prefix attached. Some combinations you just can't get around, and some you just have to kite, thus Enrage.

In addition, we’re planning to just straight-out buff Legendary items in a future patch, likely the PvP patch (1.1). These buffs will not be retroactive, and so they’ll only apply to new Legendary items found after the patch.

HAHAHAHA, get rid of those shitty legendary items on the AH ASAP, nerds. When that buff hits the pre-buff legendary prices are going to go through the floor.

Edit: Chaingmail is already selling for less than equivalent level yellows on AH. (Saw a sell order for 35k today)

The only thing I will really hold against Blizzard is that they are supposed to those awesome devs that don't release games until they're sure they're ready to go. This is supposedly why sequels like SC2 took so long, because they're going to release a game worth the 10 years of dev, same with Diablo 3. This game was obviously not 100% ready to go at launch.

All that being said, I am still having fun. I rolled a wizard because I want to give kiting a try since my Monk is getting roflpwned in Inferno.

Its like asking someone if they are sure there Monitor is turned on and similar stuff. They will always say yes no matter what

Take into account the number of D3 sales (over 5M now I think?). Even if only a minuscule percentage of accounts gets hacked that generates some serious numbers. (If its 0.5% thats already 25k accounts

)

It doesn't seem unrealistic to me that one out of 200 players has somehow given away his login info. Be it by some "GET D3 BETA ACCESS EARLIER" scams or other means (keyloggers, other sites pw db cracked, ...)

So I wouldn't be too worried about rumors like this unless people give facts you can recheck yourself.

No dude, farm for gear in the previous Act you could run. Grind enough and you'll eventually get gear/gold to allow you to progress. That's how you progress, this game is as big a grind as Diablo 2 was. Inferno is meant to be a far steeper slope of difficulty than previous levels. A "hardcore" difficulty for "hardcore" nerds. The reason some people can farm later Inferno acts is because of the imba setups that blizzard somehow overlooked. Those are now being nerfed (like the perma-stealth demon hunter, the kiting lowvita wizard, or the 4 monk invul circle jerk via Serenity). Despite this, as of a few days ago they still hadn't even had world first solo kill on Inferno Diablo by monks or witch doctors.

TL;DR - Inferno is not supposed to be something you casually jumped straight through without hardcore grinding. Blizzard envisioned people having to grind for months to be get their hands on drops that allowed them to survive later Inferno acts. This would then mean drops were "meaningful" etc.The IMBA setups that allowed you to punch higher than your gear's weight class have thrown a wrench in the works for this.

I see your point, to a degree. On the other hand already D2 offered the closed battle.net. You could choose. No doubt the infestation of manipulated chars on the open battle.net that occured in D2 isn't a good thing to go with. But Why not simply remove the the open battle.net feature, but leave the closed one and an offline singleplayer modus? Of course you would then have to disallow importing sp chars into battle.net.

I have spent near to 10 million on the auction house, have 700allres, 30k life, 10k armor and close to 25k dps on my monk. And the a2 bossmobs still kind of instagib me whereas i can play a1 literally with both hands on my cock.

But then again, you can jump acts like a motherfucker so you can farm act4 chests even if you didnt even defeat the butcher :V

Dude, you've grinded WAY more than me. I just recently got the achievement for hitting 1million gold, let alone 10. lol

But yea, the grind for melees not running cheese is monstrous. I'm not exaggerating when I say they wanted us to grind for months man. The cheese/invul builds is the only reason we're even having people toying around beyond Act 1 in Inferno.

What people have begun doing is zerging x5 stacked to a high chance respledant chest spawn in Act 3, equipping all their magic find gear before opening, and farming gear that way. The ridiculous grind is lame, I know, but it's how they are "giving meaning" to the super mega amazing loot drops that are going to drive their real money AH.
