And here find ourselves again. Two weeks remain before Hulkageddon ends, and the forums are full of self-important little shits proclaiming ever so loudly that Hulkageddon does not affect them.
The same cannot be said for the 5000 poor fools that have been deshipped in the first half of this year’s Hulkageddon, with over a trillion isk in damages done so far. This hulkageddon has exceeded our wildest expectations. I am so very proud of all our great competitors, and remember the race for the gold is not yet over!
As promised the pilot who tipped the balance past 1 Trillion isk (namely the honorable: MiserySignals of GoonWaffe ) Will be receiving a CASH BONUS of 2 billion isk for his effort.
There is some fierce competition in several of the prize categories, but most notably Tappad [Gents] (who had been in the lead for most of the event) has recently been overtaken by Oxygen Achasse, who has murdered anincredible 186 miners thusfar. I tip my hat to you sir!

In his blog he describes (in many words!) how he thinks Hulkageddon is a non-event, and ended his post with the words: Hulkageddon?? ”Pffft. Fucking whatever . . .”
Naturally this state of affairs could not be allowed! Thus Miura Bull and Kaeda Maxwell of the fine Black Rebel Rifta Club took it upon themselves to conduct a Thorough Investigation ™ to ascertain the identity of this vile Heretic. I had the distinct pleasure of being on EVE radio with the esteemed CCP Diagoras aside from being an all-round awesome dude, he is also the undisputed master of EVE numbers. As we waited on a break to pass in the live radio show, he discovered (to both our amazement) that Hulkageddon’s impact can definitely be seen in the statistics of Tranquility.

You'd be surprised what some people think their skills are worth. My youngest son used to own in FPS games 9still does, really) and he's always get these dumbasses threatening him with ZOMG tracert, finger, and spoof. Because you know watching the movie "The Net" makes you a legitimate hacker.

I told him to taunt them into ragequitting. He's pretty good at that, too. Now if he can learn to be a bit subtle, he'll collect tears and rage by the bucket.

I finally broke through my unreasonable lack of participation (four years and not a single attempt) and failed to bring enough ammo to take down the Retriever and the pod. I almost cried sitting there waiting for CONCORD with no ammo in my guns and the poor, defenseless pod on my overview...

Now he's passed his exams and he's an enthusiastic ganker. So I can see it has a niche as a "mostly AFK" way to play, justify skilling and make a little ISK playstyle. That's fine and sensible.

But what the hell is attracting so many new guys? They can't all be doing home study.

There are a few reasons:

Aversion to pvp
ISK generation
Extremely casual playstyle
Can be done solo
Ignorance

I reckon the most common reason would be a mixture of isk generation and ignorance, as far as they know this is a way to make money and they're either too dumb, lazy or unable to do/know about missions, incursions or plex sites.

Mining in other MMOs is a terrible game of running around and right clicking on resource nodes in the world, but it can usually make a bit of money.

I think it's the builder mentality, tbh. Some people look at eve as a sim city or second life. To them, PVP is to be avoided while they build their dream world or something. I know I'm doing a bad job of putting this to text. Basically I can't get it, either.

I do have a hulk pilot but I think I log him in maybe 5% of the time. Pretty much for the reasons you pointed out. I can half AFK and get many of the materials I need to build my next ship while I watch a movie or something.

When I was playing EvE, mining was my number one activity to do. It required little to no paying attention especially if you have a brain and put some tank on your Hulks and Orca to make sure you are not a soft target for gankers. As Yahtzee (from The Escapist) once said, EVE is like working a second job that you pay to have.

I've done the industry thing myself and found the profit margins so slim, tedious and unstable that I couldn't possibly bear doing it for months on end. I can't imagine anybody goes from frigate mining to capital production and still finds the whole process rewarding in any way that would make sense to me.

I my self did not enjoy mining until I was able to do it with four accounts using three Hulks and a Orca.

It's a roleplaying thing for the main part. People come into this game and make a career choice. Most want to be a pirate or a builder or something that sounds cool to them at the time. After they blow up because they shot someone in highsec and figure out that making stuff in eve requires capital and researching the market, they get stuck mining and missioning in highsec. It's the fault of small corps that accept anyone and really don't know any better.

It is because CCP never really advertises 0.0 to them or manage to make low sec work. Also most of those corpleaders like my self are just carebears who enjoy pvp on the side.
