I thought he got some big settlement for a client from his lawyer days and retired or something. I guess if I could take 40% of a settlement as lawyer fees a couple million payday would be a good retirement plan. I dont know that this happened but I seem to remember reading something about it, might of been a troll or misinformation I dont know.
Mittens retired from law. He bought his house ~in cash~ and Mrs. Mittens is attending a local school to get a doctorate.
I guess my question is why does any of this shit matter? Why does it matter that Mittens was a lawyer who bought his house in cash and Molle was an HVAC guy. Who the fuck cares? What about the fourth wall? People used to be able to keep their personal lives and their game personas completely separate -- now everyone knows everyone else's everything in this game.
I think part of it is the introduction of the CSM concept to the game. Once RL names get used, it's all over and immersion is broken. Let's consider the a fictional anecdote for a moment: CSM candidate Captain Nutsack is really Joe Blow, a 26 year old plumber from Edison, NJ. Captain Nutsack is leader of his sov-holding alliance, The Snickerdoodles. Many people dislike The Snickerdoodles for various (unimportant for this) reasons, but Joe wins a spot on the CSM anyway. Meanwhile, Mr. Blow has a bit of a past. When he was 17, he served six months in county jail for statutory rape because the parents of his 15 year old girlfriend did not like finding out that their little angel was on the pill. So not only is Joe a convicted felon, he's also listed on the local sex offender registry where he lives. What sort of meta-level damage could a member of a rival alliance cause Joe with a few cheesy google searches and twenty bucks to a background check website. They could call Joe's employer and inform them of Joe's past. They could inform Joe's neighbor that there is a sex offender in their midst and who he is.
You could say, of course, that the answer here is that Joe has a past and therefore shouldn't be allowed to run for CSM. Why not? Joe's a respected and overall upstanding member of the Eve community. While he has his rivals, his alliance also enjoys many allies and general goodwill from the populace at whole. He got elected, after all. Joe's past, while objectionable by some on moral grounds, shouldn't preclude him from participating in the CSM. Would he have a hard time getting elected for public office back in Edison? Sure, but this isn't government -- it's a quorum designed by a video game company to address issues entirely in its product. He should be no more excluded from being on the CSM than he would be for giving his endorsement as one of the "9 out of 10" plumbers who recommend Acme Drain Assassin. He's an expert on drains due to his profession, just as he's an expert on Eve due to his years of playing. Potentially, however, his real life could be summarily ruined by people from the game who could take the information provided by CCP against him.
You could say that he shouldn't have banged his 15 year old girlfriend when he was 17. I have no counter for that as it's a moral question except to say that no, he shouldn't have. She must have been really fucking hot for him to take that risk.
To bring up another "bringing RL into Eve" example, Mittens shat on Lord2Evil for being a furniture maker when he tried to switch sides during the fall of the NC. He could have merely shat on him for being stupid and trying to join the DRF/PL/WN/RDN, but he instead he poked white-collar fun at L2E for being blue-collar. vOv
See I'm sorry but that stuff isn't doing the game any favors. I know that Eve is a competitive game, but shit I mean RL is RL. Most people have shitty lives and play Eve and games of its ilk in order to escape their sub-optimal realities for a while. These tactics shit that up and even though it's GSF's mission statement not to ruin the fun but to "ruin your fun," it's still wrong and everything has a point where it stops being admirable and starts being a bit sad.
Actually I remember mittens being all "more power to him, I can't make a cabinet".
I don't know how goons end up catching all the bringing RL into the game blame. It's not like we were the ones calling into people's places of work trying to get dudes fired.
The point is that calling someone a furniture maker doesn't really mean shit and even bringing up someone's past criminal history (which is public domain) is irrelevant. I mean, what do you think goons do, fax pictures of people's penises to their bosses all day?
Meanwhile googlebombing someone to the word "cyberbully" is an accusation of unprosecuted criminal conduct that could lead to future legal action.
Obviously the media should not have covered it. Covering stories isn't their job... ohwai
Look, If you're going to act like a 4chan aspie all the time, learn to not offer your real name to everyone. I'm not generally an asshole to people yet I don't think three people in the game even know my full name. Mittens appeared to like getting publicity and now he's succeeded. If he doesn't like it he could always... kill himself.
I missed those. Was he on a longboard carrying a broken laptop?
If Rick Santorum can't sue for being googlebombed, neither can Mittens.
/badinternetlawyer The threat of legal action seems like an idle threat to gain some temporary leverage over the MMO gaming media, who are probably just as averse to any drama as CCP. The event is on YouTube, and Mittani ~probably~ doesn't want a ~real judge~ viewing it to decide a merit of a defamation lawsuit. /badinternetlawyer
Future legal action as in some goofball DA could drag mittens in on made up charges and drag him through the courts process for years at great personal expense before they finally admit he committed no crime. No one is going to arrest Santorum for having someone name a sex act after him.
Should we have let BFM slide?
The difference is in SA culture is that any information posted publicly is considered "open game" - the difference between 'poster' and 'person behind the poster' is determined by whatever personal information the person in question decides to post becomes part of the "poster"'s persona, whereas in EVE-O there is intended to be a strict and static demarcation between player and character in terms of acceptable conduct. The conflict between these poorly understood differences is the source of much stress and drama in the eve-online community.
kinda drunk right now so i'm not sure how helpful this information is ttyl
Agreed.
Threatening suicide should result in a ban to remove the possibility of the game being responsible for an unstable person's death. The person threatening suicide is either an attention-seeking emo who is inflicting his problems on other players, or is a truly unstable person who needs to step away from this game.

The only person who can sue Mittens is "The Wiz". No joke in that first sentence, and that's a very good reason to get Mittani worried.
Then he can get all of Mittens money as compensation, get a new wife, have new kids, and live happily ever after.
While Mittani would probably kill himself. Which is great!
It doesn't matter if Alex is rich (or not) a successful lawyer (or unemployed) or any other details you care to throw out there.
When you use liquor as an excuse, you have a problem

Can we stop referring to Mittani as Alex? I'm getting nostalgia pains for The Clom.
?"eve's a bad mmo, really bad, it's only saving grace is the people playing it, which i guess doesn't say great things about the people playing other MMOs"
At the very least, what they should've done is first of all check all the facts and sources, secondly use the right terms, and thirdly NOT USE THE WIS' NAME. This includes CCP on the video they put out.
I mean, it's like this concept is hard to fathom, by doing what they did in the manner they did, this case went from "oh, I see. well, that's unfortunate of mittens", to "well, that was mittens' life (potentially) fucked, and the wis is going to get taunted a lot more now. great job.".
Or are you saying that basically spreading the wis' name to everybody, basically making the matter worse for everyone involved, was the right way of doing things?
It isnt as fun when it happens to a goon fucked by other persons than themselves, goons in particular suffer from Schadenfreude the kicker is when they do it to other "cultures" and to themselfes it is all cool and dandy , but when something hits them and they cant fucked it off they try to rationalize and say ok we didnt fucked up it is all a conspiracy against the greater goon culture, when in fact people just fucked mittens because he was a dumb fuck ...
Cyberbullying is a crime in various countries, stating someone is a cyberbully is basically saying they are guilty of such without being found guilty by a court of justice. In many countries, this is tantamount to slander or defamation. Since no charges have even been pressed and there is (to my knowledge) no police investigation at this time, Mittens can't even be said to be accused of such. This isn't even getting into what actually constitutes cyberbullying either, which isn't my place to define here.
Santorum is different in that, he hasn't been accused of an illegal act, there's just a term that shares his name.
When the fuck did he use being drunk as an excuse? Have you been paying any fucking attention or did you just throw that shit out there hoping it'd stick?
People who say they do shit drunk are idiots. Plain and simple. Every act I've done while drunk, I've known what I was doing and had a level of awareness of if that shit was "good/bad".
In every statement he has released, including the one 2 posts above you from tgr
"I was a drunk asshole"
I'm loving the new angle, "I did a small bad thing, but the people reporting on it are shameless and reprehensible" and you think you "owned" this mistake when all you are trying to do is deflect the blame.
I assume you're a reasonable person, so let me ask you two questions:
1) Do you think this would be as big of a deal if the people reporting on it had stuck purely to the facts, not made some of them up or stick "cyberbully" in there etc?
2) Do you, or do you not, think that the way the reporters reported this vastly exacerbated the detrimental effect what mittens did had on the guy mittens named?
alexander gianturco is a cyberbully
I found two things funny here:
1. I can't think about this story without this image coming to mind:
Attachment 2753
2. That mittens has done a stellar job getting the pejorative suffix 'cyber-bully' removed from this name, when it should really be carebear-bully anyway, as it should be. But, the 'victim' has been called everything from suicidal to 'having mental health issues'. Even eve radio in what I assume was a sympathetic piece kind of painted him has a bit of a case. I'd be pissed if I were him, portrayed as a man on in his basement on the edge of his sanity.
Since i cant really follow this, is goonswarm failcascading because of this?
Where the fuck did I pass judgement on Mittens for being a douche? What I've said (more than once) is that there are consequences to being an asshole to people, especially when they know your real name. I'm mostly just poking fun at the manufactured outrage coming from your camp, while still maintaining the wiz should man up.
If Mitten's life is fucked, it's because he didn't exercise a little self control.
Edit:
We just had a lot of media attention about a guy who was bullied into jumping off a bridge using a webcam. Before that there was a girl who did man up and commit suicide over "cyber bullying". If you're a big enough asshole in the intarwebs, you'll be called out because the media is hysterical about this ATM. Any inkling os cyber bullying will get some kind os media attention. Mittens was the unlucky one this time. BFD.
