If you can stand subtitles then the Korean film "The Front Line" is pretty good. The pacing really drives home the emotion the characters must be feeling.

I watched three movies that I'd never seen before last night!

Avatar - Not as bad as I expected, but still bad (I missed it in Cinemas for various reasons, chiefly that it looked clichéd and I was poor at the time)

Waterworld - Awesome. "Mad Max on Jetskis" is about right

The Illusionist - Really good film, I still don't get how the Orange Tree worked

Only Orlando bothered me and that is because I don't really see him as manly knight. One other thing that bugs me about the movie is sometimes the Muslims speak Arabic to each other and sometimes English.

Never made much sense to me. Either make them speak Arabic or English but them using both languages in a single dialogue with only other Arabic people involved is dumb.

But then a lot of movies make this newbie Hollywood mistake.

Interesting movie. Little dialogue and lots of nice scenery and brutal fighting.

Damn I didn't even realize they switched back and fourth. There goes my immersion capability in that movie haha!
I'm gonna watch Valhalla Rising rising tonight after reading some reviews about it I'm pretty excited. Way to kill any motivation to get anything done!

Valhalla Rising has very little dialogue. You've been warned. It also seems kind of like 2 movies with little interconnection.

Sounds good. I don't mind little dialogue so long as story and film making are good enough to carry the film. 2 movies in one might be a little interesting.

I cannot understand how anybody enjoyed this film. It is the only film I have actually got angry whilst watching through sheer boredom.

It is too slow, NOTHING of interest happens. I found I had no empathy with any character, and cared not one shit when people died. I actually felt compelled to keep watching in the "hope" it would come good at the end...

I will agree on Kingdom of Heaven though. If I catch it on TV I always stop to watch it, love the "epic" feel of the whole film.

Edits: Spelling and grammar are hard mkay...

Great movie. If you guys havent seen the extended uncut version, that is even better than the original. Adds a lot more depth to the story and the backgrounds of the characters.

I watched In Time a few days ago. It was pretty good, and for once Amanda Seiyfred (sp?) did not remind me of Mean Girls.

These aren't "recent movies" but this seems like the general filmtalk thread so...

Remains of the Day is an excellent horrendously tragic film. Goddamned Anthony Hopkins.

Watched Hitchcock's Spellbound yesterday (Ingrid Bergman & Gregory Peck). Just YouTubed it on the TV. The fucking tension! I watched it because this guy did a poster for Gallery 1988's Hitchcock show Suspense & Gallows Humor. Some really great design in that group for reasonable prices if you're into posters (fuck you if you can afford originals). This "giclee" fad annoys the piss out of me (way to upcharge for inkjet prints) but, damn... e.g. Dave Perillo's Master of Suspense and several more really strong ones... this one... Tangentially, Mondo sold out of their fucking strongstuff Duck Dodgers print in GODDAMMNED SECONDS AND I DIDN'T GET ONE. Haha $115 on eBay, no. I always learn about these neat things after they're gone. It's not strictly film but Duck Dodgers in the 24½th Century is worth checking out if you care about animation at all. Chuck Jones, yadda yadda. Marvin Martian is one of my favorite animated characters...

Also recently saw Albert Finney in Gumshoe (the whole thing). Good old-fashioned British satire and racism.

If you've ever had any interaction with a chav, Harry Brown is pretty good masturbatory vigilante fantasy (incidentally, my favourite genre)

I saw the Avengers the other day, it was pretty competent as far as superhero movies go I guess. Cliche as fuck but the dialogue wasn't cringe inducing and it was long enough that it didn't have to rush through the "story" at breakneck pace. Also it didn't have the feminist undertones that most Joss Whedon things have

The Vow - a nice romantic movie with a good ending that is perfect for watching with your beloved or simply while having a calm evening with a cup of hot chocolate or a glass of wine...

Hobo With a Shotgun was pretty good, surrounding Rutger Hauer with a bunch of bad actors with horrible dialogue makes for an amazing movie.

Just watched "Headhunters" at the theater in town that always shows foreign films and documentaries and has locally-grown popcorn. You know the one.

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1614989/

It's a Norweigan action/adventure film that is really fucking cool, even with subtitles. There's a shitton of gore, so if you're scared by that stuff (like me), don't go with that girl you're trying to impress. Also, I keep wanting to refer to my dog as a "Hound" after seeing it, because the dog in the movie is really fucking bad ass.

Car runs out of gas while they are trying to drive out of the mist. Car stops. Group looks at each other. Dad grabs revolver and counts the bullets. There are five of them and only four bullets so he pops his son first then his friends from the supermarket sitting in the back seat. With no bullets left dad gets out of the car to get molested by the creatures. He is outside, hears a noise and think its the monsters so he closes his eyes. Few seconds pass by, big noise and tanks start to rumble by with trucks at the back filled with locals who are saved from the town.

    Dad breaks down. The end.

Snow white and the huntsman isn't too bad but Kristen Stewart often seems misplaced.
Maybe thats because I always had to think of twilight when they show her, not something I would label as positive

Prometheus is worth the 10 bucks or whatever you pay to see a movie.

Pretty standard scifi thriller stuff, but good acting, visuals, plot, etc, avoiding a lot of the cheese that can turn lower budget scifi thrillers.

Maybe thats because I always had to think of twilight when they show her, not something I would label as positive
That's what you get for watching Twilight you homo!

Prometheus was everything I wanted and more, also Michael Fassbender did a amazing job!

Men in Black 3 was very average. Not a bad film, not a great film. Not really enough to justify a men in black 3. Kinda the definition of 'meh'.

Prometheus has problems - script/plot holes/pacing - but its worth seeing, visually if nothing else, and see it in 3D.
I dont really give a shit about 3D in general but this one is worth seeing in 3D.

In other news, Sir Ridley has indicated the blu-ray will feature an extended cut, something he previously said was
not in the cards. Something like an added ~20 minutes of movie give or take.

I dont know, for all its problems I'd still be interested to see where they go with it. That said, Ridley is like 75 now
and who knows if he'll be around long enough to do a sequel anyway.

If you enjoy truly dialogue driven comedy's then you may enjoy Moonrise Kingdom. Early on you can defiantly tell it comes from the same pedigree that Wes Andersons other films come from like The Life Aquatic and The Royal Tenenbaums so if you enjoyed those you should enjoy this film.
