For the record I don't own a PS3 and I won't get one just for this game, but shit, I'm excited about seeing this revealed.

I do own a PS3, but I'm used to mouse and keyboard controls for FPS games. I want to give Dust a shot, but I'm betting that I'll get frustrated trying to play with a console controller. Then I saw one of these in a store the other day:

For what it's worth I've been using a standard wireless keyboard with the PS3 for some time, seems to work just fine. I've never seen/owned a game that supports the mouse.

Agreed. I'm sure CCP are betting the draw of 'toppling empires' will trump Dust's relatively mediocre graphics, a point which I'm inclined to agree.

For it to work though the link between games will have to be more than superficial, i.e. planetary interaction... mechanics influencing sov would be nice but don't think it's gonna happen.

CCP will not introduce Dust on PC. They contracted with Sony for PS3 ~expertise~, in the details there cannot be direct competition with Planetside 2 (owned by Sony Online Entertainment).

Edit: If and when exclusivity agreements expire, console kiddies would have moved on to the next big thing, leaving only bittervets and EVE players that already happened to own a PS3. I'm not confident that it would be profitable to port to PC at that point, but I could be wrong.

The part revealed today about how the maps are generated based on the planet/region they're suppost to represent is cool. Means there's going to be well over 7000 maps.

Woaaah, someone didn't watch the whole presentation. That's not how its going down.

Maps will be similiar but they'll have different "moods" based on the planetary setting. So we'll be seeing many different "re-skinned" maps with similar terrain. (Though I'm sure they'll have some variety obviously)

I especially enjoyed the statement how one guy pointed out a certain Temperate planet had no gravity, thus they'd need to make that planet's map have none :P, or the frozen lava planet (to which I must give credit, the presenter replied with a pretty good answer)

Say what you want but, CoD is pretty fun to play, owing to it borrowing from just about every good FPS since Doom. That's why it's so popular - it's just that it gets boring pretty fast if you play it at the levels that hardcore gamers are used to, especially older gamers who have played the games that it takes inspiration from, because it doesn't have much depth and it's really nothing new (holy balls I can't really tell the difference between CoD 4 and MW3 screenshots) in the slightest. Financially speaking, CCP could do a lot worse than target that massive niche - but I really don't think CCP are targeting that market ; DUST seems like the antithesis of a Pick-up-and-play game like CoD - I'm not saying that it's amazeballs complex or the FPS version of Chess but CCP aren't know for making easy to play games with shallow learning curves.

I think as long as the game is accessible, it stands a good chance of doing well. What is important is keeping the gameplay engaging and (like EVE) constantly adding to it. By doing that, who knows, maybe they'll break the current trend of moving onto the "new shiny FPS" every 4 months.

The game just doesn't look like an "A" shooter like CCP keep saying. It looks slow and if they make it too complex pubbie PS3 owners (myself included) will not find it appealing. I guess they are going for player retention through depth model. Will be interesting though.

This game made zero sense, and I'm glad that CCP has decided to continue with the tradition of it making zero sense. Honestly why would a developer with no console or shooter experience attempt to make a console shooter? Afuckingmazingly hilarious.

Putting it plainly, so long as the specs are reasonable the potential PC install base is almost certainly larger while the costs (for CCP) are far lower.

More fundamentally, basic rule of developing is do one major new thing at a time, because each major new thing exponentially increases your chance of a major new fuckup. In this game they're trying to do three new things at the same time, and one of those things (connecting to pc mmo with console shooter) ain't exactly something many people have experience doing.

I'm of he opinion that from a development pov, they'd have been better off getting a pc version into mass testing asap, then implementing crossover, and then doing a ps3 compatible version. That way they minimize the risk of trifecta ultrafail and have constant consumer feedback at all stages.

Sure, Sony wouldn't be as likely to support the project. But the development direction I'm suggesting would spread the costs out over time, get revenue streams in place early and establish an army of advocates and existing players before a port was even in existence. Instead of a virgin game with all the bullshit that entails, the PS3 community would be jumping into a polished experience with a history and plenty of activity. If you think about it for even a minute this has obvious advantages when going toe to toe with the established brands.

EVE has exaclty two assets as a brand. Fanatically devoted neckbeards who create content like they're being paid for it, and a large number of current microtransaction friendly customers. I get that they want to expand their brand beyond EVE, but dramatic attempts to alter the brand tend to end poorly.
