Hearing that eve-radio track, I bursted in laughter when Mittani said "These other arseholes" refering to gaming sites who wrote that the Wis real name was given. Well well, almost called the irish lad arsehole, you naughty little drunk wizzard.

Nobody's disputing that.
That's a bit of a copout, though. "If she didn't want to get raped, she shouldn't have worn that outfit."
Mittens fucked up, he's dealing with the consequences. CCP fucked up by not having a censoring delay on the live stream, they're dealing with it in their own way (I'm not going to assume what the damage might be to them in the long run). The reporters fucked up by not hiding the miner's name, thus exposing it to a much bigger audience and thus vastly increasing the miner guy's exposure to people who will actually harass him.
Where are the consequences for the reporters and/or newssites?

Because anyone who goes online and says "I'm going to kill myself." after being blown up or killed IN A GAME is serious about following through with that. I'd be surprised if I could find an instance of someone actually killing themselves over such an occurance. The closest I could find was a 12 year old boy killing himself because his parents banned him from a game, which is the result of a real person taking action in the real world and not something inthe game itself. There, are, however, quite a few incidents of people killing other people because of actions in a game. I'd conclude from such reports that it's far more likely for someone to kill another person, rather than themselves, from actions taking in an online game.
The chance of someone killing themselves because of being suicide ganked a bunch, next to none. The chance of someone going after someone from EVE behind these actions in person and taking some kind of physical action, much more possible.
I'm not sure the English you use and I use is the same, but where I'm from "I was a drunk asshole." means basically, I was an asshole and I was drunk. Yes, I was under the effects of intoxication but I was still an asshole. That's how I'd read/hear it and interpret it. If he'd had said, "I was drunk." that rationally comes out as, I did what I did because I was drunk and yes, I would say then that would be pinning it on boozing up.
Of course, it could be "I was a drunk, asshole," which naturally has very different implications but I doubt that was the intended meaning.
Fortunately that is not our house.
I find it hilarious that Mittens does a remarkably dumb douchebag thing and people act like he is literally a murderer and when people turn around and threaten to rape me to death to "teach him a lesson" everyone dog-piles on to justify the threat.
didn't he get banned from SA.com recently for not smart decisions?
“Isn't it funny how the mood can be ruined so quickly by just one busted condom”
I've seen reports of people stabbing eachother over Counterstrike as well.
3 sons have murdered her mother over playing Yahtzee. ( Link )
Even on the 1st of April I can easily believe that there are some lunatics out there who'll kill over a video game. People have been clubbing each other to death for far less.

That's taken from the first page of search results with google.
Suicide over Everquest. Something bad happened to his character in game.
That's why people should only play Eve. Eve players never kill themselves.
Also hey look what just passed in Arizona. Great work crucifying Alex over this, lawmakers might think there's some sort of crisis!
I'm sorry, but if you're considering killing yourself over a video game it's time to burn your pc, check into therapy and sort your shit out. Otherwise, your original plan is probably your best bet.
I've only taken about three semesters worth of psychology, so I'm not exactly a psychiatrist. (Nor do I play one on tv.) But if you're contemplating suicide over a video game you're probably far enough along for rational arguments and appeals for self-reflection to have no effect on your affect.
Technically I dont disagree with the sentiment. But like many things that sound technically reasonable, the whole thing shatters when clashing with the imperfection of life itself. Arguing against wheelchair ramps because physically healthy people don't need them is not a leg to stand on.
PS Arrador, you owe me 100mil; this is smartphone post 2 in +3 months.

But in view of the imperfection of life itself can we really say that Mittani outing this dude at the alliance panel might directly cause his suicide? If his life is that terrible and he is that far down the path to rationalizing suicide he's probably going to do it anyway. In all reality his feelings have little to do with in-game actions/reactions and much more to do with the terrible quality of his life in general, outside of the game.
I'm not implying we shouldn't pity the guy, his real life is very likely a really sad situation. But at the same time is Mittens really evil for mocking a threat of suicide in a video game? Especially, a video game that glorifies "tears" and racking up kills, and owes many of it's hardcore gamers to stories of corp theft, grief and scams?
The Alliance panel was definitely the wrong place to bring it up, but a lot of us read those logs before fanfest and, at least to me, it just looked like another scam victim going emo after losing his stuff.
Are you a retard or did you stay at a holiday inn last night? My comment was a rewording of tgr's comparison because he got it wrong. Follow the thread back, mang.
It's not rape if you yell surprise.
Seriously, if that really happened you should probably call the pigs and press charges. If.
On SA what Mittani did would have been acceptable. The moment you post your sob story, it becomes part of your online identity and thus 'fair game'.
On EVE it was perceived as someone attempting to mess with the real life of a person behind a character, which is unacceptable.
The separation of in-game/out-of-game identity and actions in the context of Fanfest is a gray area, but in the case of a drunk guy embarrassing your company and bringing negative attention to it, they decided to err on the side of banning.
Some nerd threatening Mittani's family over EVE-Radio is completely irrelevant as far as either EVE or SA culture and should be taken up with the guy who runs EVE-Radio to assist in setting up legal prosecution; and not have some toadies run to the forums to try and milk cheap sympathy.
I'm showing up fashionably late to the party as always. While I don't completely agree with removing Mittens from the CSM 7 completely, I understand where CCP is coming from.. This is basically coming down to a company picnic where an employee got drunk and started encouraging people to harass the (for some reason) overly depressed family that lost the 3 legged race.. Then to top it off, the people who were about to merge with the company happened to be guests of honor at the company picnic and it was being broadcast live on the local news..
Its a shame that its come down like this but blaming CCP for what had to be done to save the repercussions their REAL LIFE company with thousands of employees would have taken, over taking an in-game punishment that has next to no effect on your real life is kind of silly.. The only thing you really can do is bash CCP in game and support them out of game..
Black Legion... Muninns... OMAI!
lol no, It's quite the other way around actually, if you hadn't raped her, people wouldn't say nasty things about you.
I am enjoying the irony of a man who spends most of his time making inflammatory comments on forums, and in articles on ten ton hammer etc, getting upset by someone calling him a name he doesn't like...in an article.
Having to listen to Mittani bleat about it in a self righteous pompous manner for hours and hours until they finally submit to changing a word or two
Poor reporters
Edit: Since you brought up the ridiculous analogy of rape, I should lighten the mood a little
Things not to say on a first date
"hey relax, lets not turn this rape into a murder"
I gave a general response to a rather general statement of yours; it's not referring to this particular case.
Further above I stated that I am of the opinion that this whole thing is blown out of proportion. From what I remember The Wis spoke out that he's well just shortly after that presentation, so obviously Mittani's statement didn't directly cause his suicide.
Speaking generally again; no, of course if one is handicapped by a mental illness or even disability, playing Eve (or any MMO really; or registering/posting on kugu) isn't advisable at all. And of course, if someone is contemplating suicide, Eve might be a final straw (a sad one at that), but it's not the cause creating the situation to think about killing yourself. Now though comes the part about expecting the guy in the wheelchair to walk: He or she may not be able to rationalize.
They may not be able to control their emotional reactions as someone "normal" would be able to do, they may not be able to tell a reasonable from an unreasonable (re)action, they may not even be able to recognize humour/sarcasm/irony (even in the really obvious cases); that all depends on the respective case and handicap of course. And some may not even have somebody to "watch" over them, may it be because they are introverted people from the start and don't have many social relations, they may have isolated themselves from their social environment (be it as a cause of the illness (it's a regular pattern for addictions for example) or for different reasons which caused the mental affection (say, a clinical depression)).
Expecting someone (that may or may not include this particular miner, don't know) with a mental handicap to act and think like someone not handicapped is both ignorant and illogic. That's my only point here in the overarcing discussion.
Although of course some may claim that mental illnesses as a whole don't exist in the first place and are just an invention by the pharma industry.
"Any society, any nation, is judged on the basis of how it treats its weakest members -- the last, the least, the littlest." (too many authors to mention, Ghandi among others)

This conversation is still going on?
A person of Mittani's reputed background should have known better.
Had he made these comments somewhere besides a live video feed, it probably would have blown over with no repercussions.
CCP did what it had to do for damage control, then bans a bunch of people for RMT to get it off the front page.
CCP is beyond dumb for holding up the King of the metagamers as their shining star, just about anything they do now makes them look dumber...
I put on my robe and wizard's hat.
You are right, they should stand by their words and not back down to pressure.
Are you really comparing actual journalism to something that is akin to blogging. Does the man who wrote the massivley.com article for virtual magazine have a recognised degree, or are you making sensationalist remarks about your perceived state of journalism without checking the facts.
