4000th post sniping the Skyrim thread
Now I don't think I should post until the new year so that my average for 2011 becomes 13.33 posts/day because I love reciprocals so watch as the site's daily post count crumbles

So I have an arrow sticking out of my knee and no way to take screenshots so all those wimp guards can suck it. This upsets me.
Would any of you spaceship gentlemen recommend playing oblivion before skyrim? Basically will it be really confusing like watching The empire strikes back before a new hope and wondering why Dark Vader is so fucking mad at Harrison Ford and company?
Skyrim references oblivion but you won't be at a disadvantage or miss out on anything.

There's a 200 year gap in-universe between the games and a lot of shit happened in it such that the setting is only just recognizeable. It makes nods towards Oblivion, and other Elder Scrolls games, that you might enjoy if you played them. But it's by no means necessary.
Good to know. This brings me to my next question, is it addictive enough that I shouldn't buy it two days before my last exam?
Holy fuck xutech, what happened to your avatar?

The Da Vinci Code V : Skyrim
Its terrifying because that all looks reasonably credible
So has anyone managed to "win" this game? I have the hardest time with RPGs like this because I reach a point about halfway through where I have done a lot of stuff and have some really "l33t" gear and lose interest.

I've had so many (esp minor side quests) being broken by "running into them" ahead of time; for Shalidor's Insights I never got a quest destination to begin with. 2nd full Thieves guild quest (the first one you do for Maven Black-Briar) doesn't trigger cause I broke into the quest target house way ahead of time, etc., etc.
It's mainly those quest-fucking issues really.

Doesn't steam cloud save your files?
I to am awaiting patch. Blank books being another notable issue apart from breaking quests way too easily.
I still have no idea what runes on bug jars this is all about. I ran across the odd butterfly/bee/torchbug-in-a-jar item, but I never spotted any runes on them. And at least according to the console's itemquery, there's just one of each insect-in-a-jar itemtype, which means they are very generic pieces.
Can somebody shed some light on this for me?

So finally got around to start again, now as mage.

Been playing in the last days, Lvl 24 Dark elf thief mage.
They really put some thought in the storyline. Everything fits nicely and the fucking world they created will not be equalled for sometime I would think.
16h played now, lvl 16 mage - shit's underpowered as fuck.
can barely kill a dragon, lack mana like hell (have 300 with items) - and that's with apprentice robes and 3 items that make mana reg faster. Only way i think this will somehow work is with a max enchanted armor - so enchanting 100 is on my list too.
my redguard pubstomper was raping at this level.
On the positive side, there's a spell that transforms iron into silver, and silver into gold. 200 Gold necklaces = good monies
i also somehow killed lydia, working on becoming thane somewhere else now, just cause i need someone to tank for me.

Magic as a standalone is pretty poor. I roll with a melee/mage mix (with max smithing/enchanting) so I have more survivability.

The one really annoying thing is that you can't fight more then 3 people - unless one of them is a boss, then you're fucked already.
need mana? use potions!

The short answer is mana regen enchantments, mana regen enchantments, and mana regen enchantments. Did I mention mana regen enchantments yet?
The long answer is that to be effectve at that you need to spend a good amount of perks in the enchantment branch, be able to dual enchant (mana + mana regen or in case of body armor/clothes, have 2 mana regen+magic school enchantments, i.e. mana regen+destruction and mana regen+conjuration; you get those enchantments from the various college mage robes).
And on top of it better also have very good alchemy skills to make yourself enchantment boosting potions.
But yeah, in the end magic seems to be rather underpowered, especially the further you rise in level and in comparison to archery and melee weapons. The Expert destruction spells from level 40 or so onwards quickly become rather weak, not to mention what happens once you cross the 50. And the master spells don't make up for it either due to the way you have to cast them (dual-handen, without being able to move).
In the end it probably comes down to Skyrim offering both less spells in total and per school and eventually of course the ability to create your own spells. Like Grim said, magic is a nice supportive tool, but it's very inadequate as prime/sole weapon.
Archery sucks for its aiming process being fucked. Just when you thing you learned how to aim, you shoot right over or not far enough. That worked a lot better in Oblivion.

done eye of magnus, working on staff of magnus, but labyrinthia is kinda hard to do without tanking meatbag, so i gotta ~Thane~ some city first.

Be sure to note that you only get housecarls in the major cities (Whiterun, Markath, Riften, Solitude, and Windhelm). You can become Thane in the 4 smaller ones, too, but you won't get a housecarl there. And in case of Windhelm or Solitude it requires you to join the Legion or Stormcloaks respectively.
Although finding mercs or people to follow you around isn't all that difficult, tbh, doesn't have to be a housecarl.

After Faendal got me to level 50 archery for free I felt obligated to bring him everywhere. Now if there was a similar bug for pickpocket I wont have to remain the poorest man in Skyrim.
I've been running around all over Skyrim, recruiting followers, just to...
It's really nice to play in skyrim since it isn't your usual high fantasy lord of the rings meets Excalibur.

Funfacts about Skyrim: It's one of the only 2 popular culture references to the undead from Norse mythology knowns as Draugr or Draug.
- The Draugr appeared as an enemy faced in the Bethesda 2003 video game expansion The Elder Scrolls III: Bloodmoon and made a reappearance in the Bethesda 2011 video game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. They are found in crypts and will rise from their graves when an intruder enters.

There apparently seems to be a bug which takes away the ownership flag for her bed in her little bedroom as soon as you buy any of the furniture for your Whiterun house. That's why she almost never leaves your room or if, then only to stand in her room to go back sitting at your table (and basically, never sleeps)
