    Default Kicking the habit.

After five years of being a smelly nicotine fiend, I've finally decided to quit smoking. Not 'trying it out' or 'taking a break' but quitting for good.

To facilitate this, I'm also giving up my triggers - namely alcohol and caffeine. Not forever, but just long enough that I figure out how to deal with constantly wanting a smoke.

Has anybody else tried this and succeeded?

Am I a bad person because I read 'giving up my triggers' as 'giving up my niggers'?

i got like, the bird flu 2 and a half years ago, the smell of a cig would make me vomit, and the illness took about 2 weeks to run its course. I haven't had a smoke since the morning i woke up sick.

Make the 2 week mark cold turkey and you're home free, get a pencil to gnaw on for the oral fixation you've developed over time

7th month and counting. To start with I got over the cravings using lollipops. Giving your hands and mouth something to do when your hanging around helps.

I would say 3-4 weeks, but yeah it does get easier. Though, I still get cravings from time to time, but they last 2-5 minutes max.

I have quit numerous times, the cravings get less and less over time - and then there are other benefits, like today is a fucking god awful day and i look at all these poor smokers standing out the front like it is soviet russia, huddling around smoking.

e: I meant "successfully" quit numerous times, while that sounds stupid, I had quit for over a year or something, then found reasons to smoke again. The key is to just know that your body is specifically trying to fuck you up - it will convince you that you deserve a smoke, or that one won't hurt, or that you can control it. You can't, deal wiz it. I have been off them again for about a year now, and that was because I promised my wife (as she was pregnant) - having a babby around makes me really not want to smoke.

Moral of the story, go and get some bitch pregnant for motivation

How long has it been since your last smoke?

I've tried quitting about 4 or 5 times in 15 years. FUCK MY LIFE IT'S HARD!!! Most of those times I thought I failed because I was smoking weed all the time. After smoking a bowl a cigarette was the first thing I wanted. I'd get stoned, and have a cigarette or two. But when you smoke everyday, and you wanted a smoke or two every day....well I was back to a pack a day within the month.

I don't smoke weed anymore and haven't for a while now. Hasn't made it any easier to kick the nicotine habit at all. It may be even harder now.

The trick with quitting smoking is not slipping once, I am not joking that your mind or body or whatever will try every fucking trick in the book to get you to have a smoke. Each time I have quit smoking, something fucked has happened which has convinced me that I should start smoking again - the thing is, you can't do it.

Hypnotism apparently has great success, and for ~$200, you can't really go too wrong (I had a mate that was doing it professionally, and my brother had it done (by someone else) both of them swear by it v0v)

The trick is that I don't have access to cigarettes. I folded a few hours ago and started smoking butts out my ashtray, but that's not going to last. I should probably just trash the rest of my butts.

The trick with quitting anything is to not do it for a long time, just do it for 5 minutes - if you can't last 5 minutes, do it for 3 minutes.

I was a functioning alcoholic and I have an addictive personality, which doesn't help. Just don't have a smoke for 5 minutes, after that 5 minutes, re-evaluate and see if you can go for another 5 minutes. Distract yourself as much as possible with absolutely anything.

If it is really fucking you up, get some nicotine gum - it tastes like fucking shit (so mix it with regular gum) but it can calm you down.

I've been a smoker now for... 23 years? 24? Something like that. Back in January of 2011 I had the bright idea to quit cigarettes by using chewing tobacco. It worked for a while, didn't have the urge to smoke and was still able to have my massive daily nicotine intake.

Then for my birthday in August I quit chewing tobacco cold turkey! I was pumped -- even though it sucked donkey dicks for the first two weeks. I was free and clear, confident that I'd never smoke again. Well, fast forward a couple of months -- I'm sort of stressed out about something and sitting alone at the house. I wasn't even thinking about cigarettes but my mind was really going and I was super anxious. Anyway I walked by the kitchen table and looked down and there were my wife's cigarettes as usual. Except this time, I inexplicably grabbed one and walked outside to smoke it.

For a while it was just a sole cigarette a night alone on the porch. It didn't take long though before it was all over. Now I'm totally fucked -- I'm back up to about 30 cigarettes a day AND I chew tobacco again to boot! It's a hot mess. I keep trying to convince myself that I'm going to quit again this year, just later... later. Meanwhile I'm not getting any younger and I can't breathe and my breath always smells like a llama's nuts.

My point is that congrats on quitting, just be careful - the addiction will grab you when you least expect it, and the pull is intense even after the nicotine is long out of your system. Old habits die really really hard. Smoking sucks. I like to consider myself a pretty progressive parent, but I swear if I ever saw one of my kids smoking a cigarette I would punch them in the fucking throat.

If you just make yourself vomit every time you want to smoke, or at least pair smoking with something so adverse it will disgust you, then you will quit smoking.

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0000726/

Antabuse messes with enzymes that are used in breaking down alcohol, but besides that the pill really works because it pairs something you really hate with drinking, the point that drinking is completely unpleasant.

I don't want to take any medications. My brother was on Chantix and it totally fucked him over. Might try gum, though.

    1) Get something for the oral fixation. I chewed gum. Don't just eat, you'll get fat(ter) as fuck
2)It really does get easier. 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 2 months, blab blah...it just gets easier as time passes.
    3) Just don't smoke. Not being cheeky, but there's no such thing as one last smoke, just one puff, etc. Once you start, just don't smoke.
    4) If you do fuck up, don't just go back to a pack a day and cry like a baby. Start again the next day.

Honestly one amazing thing that happened when I quit was nightmares - I would have nightmares that I had started smoking again, I would wake up and feel so fucking that I had slipped, it actually made me feel really good.

Of course, if you want crazy ass fucked up dreams, patches + having a smoke is always good.

There is also some kind of toothpaste you can use that makes cigarette smoke taste like a black man's chode - though that may make you smoke more idk

Copy what Gr-g-th said into your mind/tattoo it onto your smoking hand WTFeva you need to do to remember it.
I have quit "successfully" three times now. The first two I caught a wicked chest cold, bought the nicorette gum and gave it up because at the time I couldn't physically bear to smoke and figured why not quit while quitting is good.
I also tried giving up coffee/beer/whisky/wimmin/wtfeverelse was a 'trigger' for a smoke (ie: all the good things in life).

    This is a mistake.

All this does is make your body equate good and wonderful things with smoking... making any drunken, steaky, sex-filled night an automatic relapse.

Most recently I quit, cold-assed-turkey, while healthy as a horse... and kept drinking my coffee, beer, whisky and eating steak and pussy erryday.

I find the key is to disassociate smoking from the finer things in life. Now, for the first time ever, I smell someone smoking and don't feel like bumming one off that poor soul.

I feel like getting a rare new york strip and a martini and licking a sexy redheads vaginahole.

I quit back in July 2010 after nearly 30 years of smoking (yes I'm an old fart). Tried patches in the January of that year and it was a fucking joke.

Decided one day to not have a cigarette.

Decided the next day to not have one either.

Decided to not have one on the third day.

    ....

Decided not to have one today as well.

    Haven't had a single puff since July 14, 2010 at 6:07PM.

Still fucking want to have a cigarette at least a dozen times a day, just nowhere near as strong.

Take it a day at a time is the best advice I can give you - and don;t try and do it "the easy way". There isn't one.

    Fuck cigarettes forever.

BTW I was so hooked on them that I became asthmatic again and was taking Seretide and Ventolin just so i could smoke. One week after I decided not to have one I was off all medication - it's worth it.

Also - main motivation for staying off the fuckers? Not wanting to go through that bullshit again.

Look at E-Cigs, if cold turkey/gum doesn't work. I know its not really a way to quit and more a replacement(one thats not as bad), but it can help you gradually calm the cravings by lowering the nicotine level. Or if you just have a oral fixation it helps out with that by getting 0 nicotine juice. Granted I'm not the best spokesperson for E-Cigs since I went back to the pack, but I did use it for 6 months and it worked out very well. The reason I went back to cigs is most likely due to my own lazyness and the fact that I didn't keep up with cleaning the unit. I got tired of it fucking up. I may give it another try, but then again I love my cancer sticks.

I've thrown up my hands in despair over it honestly. I figure the way I look at it is everyone quits smoking eventually. At this rate I suspect I too will be quitting using the "everyone quits eventually" method around the time I'm 50. It also doesn't help that I am a fatty. For someone who has such a kickass life, I sure have a lot of old vices going back to my whiskey tango days.

You can't get me to stop putting my tongue on that redhead's vaginahole though. Shit has kept my marriage intact and strong for a decade. There's no reason to lay off that red meat.

I am marrie to a ginger - and also quit smoking ~ 5 years ago. I'd tried a few times before that but it came down to having something to quit for. In my case we wanted to start a family and I didn't want smoke arund the baby - plus I coughed up blood one time and had to have chest x-rays to see if it was cancer. That kind of scared the shit out of me so v0v

Why do people start smoking? Sorry if i sound condisending but i'm at a young age and don't smoke but tried it and it just was shit, and have many friends who smoke and just constintly say they want to stop although i don't get why they start it when they obviously know they will regret it in the future

IDK. When I was in high school I had friends who smoked, and I did too for a little bit. Somehow I never got addicted, and since I always knew it was stupid and unhealthy I just stopped doing it without issue when I went to college.

Smoked from '86 to 2000 (with a three year break in there somewhere). The thing that finally worked for me was Paxil combined with nicco inhalers for a short time.

The paxil really helped smooth me out while my body and mind got used to no longer having my drug of choice in my system. It was still a challenge but not nearly as bad as I was having before the SSRI was introduced.

All of this. As for the weight gain (I gained a lot!) after a few years, your lungs begin healing and you'll be able to handle more activities. I lost pretty much all of the weight I gained once I was on the mend.

I switched to "electronic cigarettes" in 2009. Basically it's just a battery and heater that heats a propylene glycol, flavor, and nicotine suspension to the point that it vaporizes, ala-fog machine. Made dropping tobacco completely painless. I feel much better and I'm not hacking up my lungs all the time anymore.

Now if I could just quit this fucking thing.

when I was in high school pretty much everyone smoked. At least everyone I wanted to hang out with. All the girls did anyway. Plus my mom and stepdad smoked as did my sisters so getting cigs was always super easy. All my reefer smoking friends also smoked cigs. It just sort of escalated into a habit over time.

Started smoking dope when I was around fourteen and have been smoking now for about twelve years. I tried cigarettes but always found it disgusting and it made me noxious. I did not get addicted to marijuana until I was twenty and until then I always had it under control and usually just smoked in the weekend and/or vacation. This changed when I was twenty and left Holland for a year. I stayed at my cousins place in Canada while I worked for him. He, at the time, was living together with a good friend of his. The problem was that they loved to smoke a dewbie and as a pot smoker my self we had three smokers in the house wich resulted soon in always one of us wanting to have a smoke. After a year I went back to Holland and I was used to having at least one joint a day, that in combination with cofeeshops being all over the place made it impossible to return to my old pot smoking habits.

The only time I am not smoking daily now is when I am either on vacation abroad or I am having financial issues but even then I got tons of mates to mooch of so most of the time i'm still stoned.

There were times I smoked less or even had whole weeks of soberness and I accomplished this by always carrying a bottle of water with me and every time I felt like having a joint I just took a couple sips to cure that oral fixation because honestly as Grogoth mentioned that is what it is al about. And it does not even have to be water, just put something in your mouth and you will instantly feel a bit re leaved.

I'm sorry did you use the words "addicted" and "marijuana" in the same sentence? Just checking. I hope this post was an elaborate joke. If so, then kudos. Otherwise

Yeah I have and it was no troll. Only in Holland I actually feel addicted to it because its nearly impossible for me to go a day with out a joint, while if I am a month or more away on a vacation abroad I don't have a single smoke or suffer any addiction symptoms such as shakes, feeling uneasy, bad mood etc.

While it sounds weird, you can get addicted to things that don't neccesarily make you chemically dependent. Like sex addiction, shopaholics, addiction to video games...

right and I'm not disputing the psychologically addictive potential of marijuana use at all. I just find it a bit out of context in a thread about nicotine. It's sort of like he's taking the piss by having us go on about our crippling addictions to nicotine and be all like "I smoke a bunch of pot." It's an entirely different thing really. Don't get me wrong I'm glad that he does -- shit I smoke a bunch of pot too and have for a long time also. However, what happens when I don't have my daily bong load or vape sesh is certainly nothing like if I were to go a full day without a cigarette; I may be a little cranky that I have to deal with the day sober, but people are in no danger of direct physical harm from me. Nicotine addiction is a completely different ballgame.

I started mixing tobacco with my cannabis for the added buzz and frugality about a year ago, and for a while alternated between smoking spliffs and cigarettes. I went through about a pack a week for two months or so but could never really find myself content with cigarettes. The buzz was lackluster and too short and I couldn't acclimate myself to the harshness of the smoke.

Eh, to each their own I guess.

I took a Rx called chantex and stopped smoking with no issues. My wife stopped at same time.

NEVER water down Jah's gift of cannabis with poisons like tobacco. This is why Jesus and Haile Selassie have seen fit to curse you with addiction.

In all seriousness though I've heard that a strong trip (big dose of LSD or DMT ala ayhuasca) can do wonders with addiction. I haven't smoked since I was 16, so I don't really have any (factual) good advice, although in my own defense I think tripping is always good advice.

Look -- I'm saying there's a pretty big difference between a physical addiction and a psychological one. Who is whining? They are entirely different topics. Why don't you tell me about that one time you had a really bad problem with fucking cheesecake or whatever else? Same difference. If you drink coffee, stop for a week -- see how your body changes. I resent that you came up in the thread with no experience on the matter and decided that your opinion matters because you cut down on weed. It's apples and oranges. Then you're a prick to me when I bring up a question of relevance? Calm down.

I'm dissing you because you are dumb, ignorant and bash on something you are unwilling to try. Both products gives you the exact same addictions except weed makes you slow, lazy and extremely fucking happy. (I guess cigarettes makes you happy to, but only for the 2 minutes you are actually smoking it >)

And the fact I used marijuana in my posts is because I use that a lot more on a daily base.

You seem angsty, have a smoke.
