    Default Eve and College

    o/ Kugu

Coming up in a few weeks, I begin a new stage of my life when I head up to Cambridge, MA for my Freshman year at MIT. I am super-duper excited.

I'm also kinda worried, too. How will this affect my Eve playing? That sounds kinda weird, as in I don't want to go out and socialize, I'd rather play Eve. That isn't the case. I do wanna go out, do shit, have fun, study hard, etc. Nevertheless, I enjoy playing Eve, and I would still like to spend time with my corp-mates in game. For people who are in college/graduated, what is/was your experience while playing the game in college?

    Thanks for your thoughts!

My thoughts: you will be attending one of the top 10 colleges on this planet. Do not waste that opportunity for anything.

There is a great Darwinian process where people that can't focus and prioritize get weeded out in college. RL > EVE should help, plus you will still have more free time than ever again while in school if you succeed in starting a career and/or family.

You're going to MIT. Fucking stop playing EVE and get a god damn education while making connections.
I've noticed that there's a pretty big disconnect between the general consensus of kugu and what's actually happening. It seems enough people have said it in this thread that people are taking it as fact.

Don't be mittens and stay up 30+ hours. You'll be fine. Most of EVE is done offline anyways.

You can do eve and be good at college, saying that eve made you fail your finals is just an excuse.

I played eve all through college, - I started playing in college, some random dude there got me into it, in the dorms in first year. College is about trying to LAN a dozen computers to do a local game of counterstike 1.5 and failing miserably and then going to the pub.

Its not an old/young thing wusti, its a Yank/Aussie thing. Back in my day (all of half a dozen years ago), The pub/getting laid was the priority. In that order too methinks.

College, hah. Try EVE being married and with kids.
[Arrador] possesses a considerable understanding of ship configurations, strengths and weakness. He gives clear and purposeful instructions, is good at taking advantage of the fleet-composition he's dealt, and never loses sight of the main goal: fun. This, paired with an excellent tolerance for strong drink gives him an almost Churchillian capability to win, despite being completely pissed on booze most of the fleet operation.

I've albeit stopped going to classes. Now, this isn't because of Eve but its definitely a contributing factor. I played during the week and went out on Friday/Sat.

I say focus on grades and work out all the time. A guy in good shape with a degree from MIT can really make shit tons of money, which translates into shit tons of vagina. /endthread

I base this off the tripling of my income since I started working out 5 years ago.

It's not hard to balance the two, but always prioritize classes and studying over EVE. You'll be tempted not to, as I have, but it doesn't tend to end well (or at the very least you get super stressed trying to play catchup the day before something is due).

if you can ignore all the steoreotype "get da booze and da pussy bra " posters and listen to friend Gobbins here~

    1. if you fail your exams because you played too much videogames it means you are shit to begin with and somebody else deserves your spot - eve is just an excuse

    2. eve can teach you those important lessons that you will not learn from academia - lessons about how people react and behave when shit is at stake, and possibly lessons in leadership. I might get called out about this but I stand by it 100%, I know things I learned from eve helped me a lot with getting a the job I wanted after I graduated - and are still being valuable to me. It might just be that I was a naive babby tho :iiam: and it might depend how you play this game to being with.

    3. eve does not need to be played hardcore to be competitive. If you are smart enough to get into MIT then setup an xls sheet and start making passive isk off the jita market. Apart from that attending a couple ops a week (2-3hrs each) will easily be enough to keep in the loop.

I had friends in MUDs who failed out of college because they got obsessive. I was like wat.

Me, I got arrested and missed my senior finals (ended up passing em later). Jail is really boring.

So, uh, other stuff is good but winning at grades and getting a good job makes the rest of the stuff easier. Trust me, you do not want to spend months surviving on a diet of oatmeal while you look for a way out of a soul crushing job because of a mistake you made early in life.

Eve and college is doable but if you think you can play 6-7 hours a day every day and still manage a full courseload and sleep you will be in trouble. During my 1st year or so of college I was taking scrub basic classes so I managed to put a lot of time into eve, I was doing speed so I slept probably 3 hours a night at most for 7-8 months. All that sleep loss added up and I learned my lesson. Now im taking much harder classes as pretty much all I have left are university level chemistry and calculus classes. I realized that playing eve reguarly did hurt my performance. Now I play eve or more often tanks when I have time but I always prioritze. I used to convince myself it was OK to spend all night on eve or doing shit as long as I was caught up with school but it really was not helping. TLR if your a freshman you should be able to play eve and have no problems but as you get farther along into college you will probably at some point find yourself no longer interested in EVE simply because there is so much on your plate. As long as you can recognize when you need to give it up you will be fine.

Win EVE for a few years and play skill-training-and-forums Online. Come back when you have cemented a good job and can afford to waste your free time.

Better yet, don't come back and invent something useful for socity like a good MIT grad.

    Update:

I have literally played no Eve during my time here. I got on Eve to evacuate my stuff from Provi today, but otherwise I'm splitting my time between partying, girls, homework, and varsity swimming.

Also, I feel like this may be a topic for another thread, but I am semi-interested in a new corp, one of those fabled "chill PvP" outlets like Black Legion. or The Concordiat or something. Anyone have any suggestions for a perfect Scimi/Guardian pilot who is nonetheless terrible at PvP?

Honestly I thought I'd have a hard time playing less EVE and focusing on college, but to be honest I've had to remind myself to play EVE. Not in a bad way; I still enjoy FCing immensely but it's really easy to forget about roams and such. On top of that my internet's down so I haven't played in a week.

TBH it's harder to stop socializing(lol an old person word) and do your work than it is to stop playing EVE or balance EVE and school. Also having a boyfriend is great but it's a huge drain on your time.

I'm at uni myself, and I find myself agreeing with a lot of what Sec said; your social life will start to loom large over everything you do, including EVE. Unless you're a complete recluse, you *will* make friends, and you *will* end up going out an awful lot. I swear I could be a titan pilot by now with the amount of training time I've lost simply through forgetting to log in and change skills because I was busy getting bladdered at the student union.

My school is full of nerds, and not the fun type of nerds but the annoying type of nerds who talk in internet memes and have debates about semantics. There are no good times here. A 4 anywhere else is an 8 on this campus. It is sad.

I would take a break from Eve for awhile to get accustomed to college life. Live it up and fuck Eve. Then once you have a good start with school, and got most of the drunken mistakes out of the way then move back to Eve(casually).

It part of life. Learn from your mistakes and make yourself better because of it. Going to college parties without getting shit faced is a waste. Drunken mistakes will happen.

I don't know about you but I don't need to do something retarded to know it's a bad idea. I've seen a lot of people do really stupid things in college and they never seem to learn from it so v0v. I guess it depends how much stock you set in the ~college experience~ but I can tell you as a (former, I don't associate with them anymore) member of the gay community(where basically every stupid thing you can do is combined at once, from unprotected sex to unrestricted drinking to changing partners every night to having a candy store of drugs at your fingertips) that it just leaves a hole in you (and your liver.)

Honestly just go to school and study. You're paying for it, after all, and it is so worth it. Have fun with friends; lots of fun, but remember why you're going to college. It's not to get cirrhosis, because honestly you won't get any satisfaction from all the times you got wasted in a few years. Go to class and have fun, in that order(but definitely do both), and your life will be that much better.

Anyone who tells you getting wasted every weekend is part of the college experience is just trying to use that as an excuse for their behavior so they don't feel depressed or ashamed.

also, time management has worked for me. I'm not sure what your courseload is going to be (MIT ) but if you can handle it a bit of eve here and there really shouldn't be a big deal

If it's a big college (MIT is) you are gonna need a huge load a time to work after classes. In my little political sciences/law college in France i can manage to play EVE 3-4 hours a day, go with friends at night and work more than enought. Just balance things and always prioritize work over friends over EVE, in that order.

If you live in null-sec, pack your shit and live out of a carrier. Several times I've had members get deployed, take a break, or start up college/uni' and then come back after we had moved. Don't risk losing your stuff.

I wouldn't quit if I were you. I would step away from any leadership or logistical obligations.

Beyond that, if you find yourself wanting to play a lot of Eve in the next phase of your life......you're doing it wrong. It's college man!! Don't waste it sitting in front of a computer screen for hours on end. You can do that later in life.

Oh ya, and don't piss on an opportunity to graduate from one of the best schools in the country. A lot of people never have that opportunity even if they have the brains. Don't blow it.

You are currently on the right track. EVE can wait, trust me. College years though, they'll go by so fast while you sit in front of a screen, you won't believe it. Take it from someone who used to be a hardcore WoW grinder - the game for me was an excuse to neglect lawschool (which is shit, along with the people in it, and I hate it to this day). Even though I made a lot of friends (even today I get together with my former raid buddies) sometimes I wonder if playing less would have prevented me from having to repeat my last year in college.

Not that the repeating of a schoolyear itself was something unpleasant. I quit EVE then and spent most of time between some study(just enough to finish), reading books and going out. The fact that my computer DIAF-ed might have also helped. Now I'm on the track to become a lawyer, having just taken the bar entrance exam (fingers crossed XoX). Even if I fail the exam, I have an enjoyable job until the next try.

And as a note: like a lot of young people in my country I live with my parents. Trying to tell myself it's because rent is so damn expensive in this city, but the reality is my own room in this house is bigger than half the flats in town, and I don't know how I'd survive without my mother's cooking. Oh, and since everyone amongst my friends is doing so, nobody can look down on me for this. That and the people who HAVE moved out from their parents house are downright miserable. Unless they're married or have plans like that, in which case it's game over.

The final point is: you should take the path that will most definitely never cause you to look behind wondering if there's something you missed. Look at me: I don't like law and its school, nor its people, yet I still wonder, even while working (true, a much less-paying but) satisfying job full of nice folks. Also, be thankful that, provided you finish MIT, you had the talent and wits to graduate into a work field which will earn you sufficient money without having to degrade yourself in any way. You'll get respect and accomplishment, and most likely never have to wonder if what you're doing is a bad thing in and of itself.

Obviously college comes first, friends and girls second and eve whenever you feel like it. You will probably forget about eve when you are having a good time with your friends and feel an uncontrollable urge to play when your studying at your desk. I wasted a year on partying and didn't log on to eve for months but I resubed when i pulled my act together and now I play casually.

Best advice i can give you is to find a group in eve that allows you to have fun on your own schedule. No 8 hour form up cta, no blueballing because they are blobbing. If there is too much bullshit in your alliance, leave and find a better one. Never feel obligated to log on because important internet spaceship business, if you are not having fun log off, go party and log on the next day.

The average day in the life of freshers Deniera -

    1) wake up 5mins too late to make the first lecture
    2) get food/coffee/puke brains out - in hopes of curing hangover
    3) chill with flatmates - watch movies or play xbox/ps3/pc games
    5) run out to college for a mandatory tutorial/presentation
    6) More movies/games
    7) spend 5mins attempting to start essay due in a week/day/month
    8) pub
    9) flat party / getting laid

    That was basically every day.

    ------

I wonder if we can get an update from this guy on how his college stuff is going - freshers week(s) is over by now right?

It really depends on the school. A group I'm in has supposedly wild parties, ones that make even the frats jealous (now that the one party frat is gone, anyway). They're pretty tame affairs. Even when we do get drunk off our ass, it is rare for anyone to begin with the vomit.

    Also you forgot masturbation.

Fake Edit: Oh wait, just saw "pub". Yeah, Freshmen aren't going to bars in the States. Not good ones.
?"eve's a bad mmo, really bad, it's only saving grace is the people playing it, which i guess doesn't say great things about the people playing other MMOs"

USA : the place where you can drive at 16, get gangbanged at 18, and drink a beer in a bar at 21.

    Sounds amazing.
