It's shit if you want some grand narrative or to conquer systems in some kind of meaningful way. If you want meaningless solo/small-gang spaceship counterstrike with some very lucrative missions attached, it's pretty good (and always has been).

It's fun because you do not need to travel 20+ jumps to get to a fight, when it comes to those weekly big (100 man...this is low sec after all not 0.0 coalition blobbing) fights, you get some nice cap action and reshipping etc...
It often feels a lot like like Dark Age of Camelot's BattleGround fight(Morvik).
The only real crappy thing about it is that CCP does not bother to fix some very simple bugs/issues. And of course the PL supercap blob. But oh well, it is still some of the most accessible PvP out there.

I just put an alt in Minnie FW for cheap cruiser fun. I've lost a scythe to a rifter and a belli to a camp. More fun in a few days than I've had poking around null lately.
I've flown through the Amamake area a dozen times and haven't been killed by a super yet. I am disappoint.

personally i like it for, pvp whenever i want it within several jumps of home system, plenty isk whenever i want it, no sov warfare or politics. yes mechanics may not be the way they were intended but the regular aspects of eve are there and working correctly (as far as i see it anyway)

FW is ok for casual no strings attached pvp. If you want more than that it gets old.
I think there's a lot that could be done with FW but didn't the last fanfest roundtable for it actually not even get a dev to show up? Kinda sending a message there.

To answer the original question, in my own opinion:
One of the greatest things that EVE has going for it is that your actions are, or at least feel, meaningful. In no other game have I felt like my choices have genuine and lasting consequences for myself and other people.
The problem with Faction Warfare is that it is meaningless. No one ever even bothers doing the actual faction warfare because occupancy means nothing and it doesn't matter who "owns" what systems. As you said, FW is nothing more than some easy missions and a free wardec.
EVE isn't a particularly good game for no-strings attached PVP. It's not very balanced and is fairly slow paced. What makes PVP good in EVE is that losses are meaningful and people act differently when losing in PVP means actual time-investment loss.
People who want quick, no-strings-attached PVP would do better to play a different game where the mechanics are more suited to that style.
I enjoyed factional warfare back when it first came out in '08, still some of the more fun 3 months I had in EVE. It lust some of its luster once the progress seemed pointless. I'm pretty sure the Caldari even won once, creating sort of a "well now what" moment. Despite that, I did believe it was always a good bridging pvp mechanism for players transitioning from Hi-sec to 0.0. When our corp started out as a high-sec corp, we went to factional warfare before 0.0, helped out a lot.
I agree with Progod on this one, FW was good a couple of years back, and probably still is for getting people into PVP, sure there are some goddamn awful FC's in FW, but just occasionally you would find a good one. Certainly the time I spent in there with my corp was a good learning experience for all of us, and we came out of it a lot stronger.
Mind, we spent most of our time fighting Jade and Star Fraction, more fun smacking them than killing them (when they undocked without carriers).

I'd recommend it to anyone, but not for too long.
When I did FW it was alright for me to have an alt in for casual pvp, but tbh for casual pvp there is no better place than RvB imho, so FW's not even a standout in that department.
RvB was more of a joke than FW.
A bunch of high sec faggots complaining because you podded him or because you brought a faction frig to your arranged t1 frig fight.

RvB sucked when I was in because nobody wanted to engage without superior numbers even with T-1 ships. It was like null but with station games.
BTW, Vonq. Is it possible people complained about you because you pissed on the spirit of arranging a T-1 fight? I'm sure it can't be them just not liking douchebaggery.
It wasn't me who did it friend, I was just in the fleet. We had less people then them so we didn't think it was a big deal.
