Yes, it is loading images over HTTPS. However, the HTML page itself is being loaded over HTTP. It is perfectly sensible that images loaded over goonswarm.com via HTTPS will involve a SSL certificate for goonswarm.com.

You are wrong and this is dumb. Remote image loads + AdSense + SSL does not equal any sort of usable data to the image host. You can however just pour over the normal access logs on the image host to see what IP's loaded the image -- which is what you're alleging here. That does not require the SSL cert and the cookie magic. So anyone who serves an image in a sig can do that very thing.
